Patent number: 8943337Abstract: Various techniques for managing power consumption of computing devices within a data protection system are disclosed. For example, one method involves accessing policy information, which the policy information indicates when one or more data protection system activities should be performed and identifies whether a computing device is participating in the data protection system activities. Based upon this policy information, the method then identifies whether power consumption of the computing device can be reduced. In response to identifying that the power consumption of the computing device can be reduced, a power management command is automatically sent via a network. Performance of the power management command reduces the power consumption of the computing device.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 2012Date of Patent: January 27, 2015Assignee: Symantec CorporationInventor: Jeremy Dean Swift

Patent number: 8572051Abstract: Parallel execution of SQL statements is made fault-tolerant. Specifically, during parallel query processing, a new row source is created that allows checkpoints to be stored at certain points in the query processing. If a failure occurs, then the query can be restarted from the most recent checkpoint (rather than from the very beginning of the query). The checkpoints are implemented at operation boundaries where rows need to be redistributed among processes. These are natural checkpoint locations because (1) each subsequent operation can proceed from the output of the previous operation, which is stored as a checkpoint, and (2) these operation completions tend to be points in the computation where the query state is minimized, thus minimizing checkpoint storage requirements.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2012Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Oracle International CorporationInventors: Mengmeng Chen, Yali Zhu, Thierry Cruanes, Alan Wood

Patent number: 7899785Abstract: Splitting and merging database object information sharing streams. Streams are also referred to herein as “propagations”. Splitting and merging information sharing streams can be used to improve performance in a information sharing environment when a failed or slow DBS impacts the performance. In one embodiment, an auto split process monitors the progress of applying changes at each node and detects the presence of a failed or a slow node. Once the failed or slow node is identified, the auto split process splits the propagation such that the offending node is sent through a separate propagation. Furthermore, an auto merge process can be started to monitor the newly created separate propagation. At a later point, the new propagation can be merged back into the original stream. For example, if the offending node catches up with other nodes, the auto merge process merges the newly created propagation back to the original propagation.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 2007Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Oracle International CorporationInventors: Jun Yuan, Alan Downing, Lik Wong, Nimar Arora, Patricia H. Patent number: 7844646Abstract: According to an embodiment of the present invention, a filer or other storage server is coupled to a network to store files for users of the network. An agent is coupled to the filer, and performs a scan or file walk for a Multi-Appliance Management Application (MMA) which is coupled to the filer and can monitor and manage the filer. The agent assigns identification (ID) numbers to the directories while scanning them. The ID numbers are assigned in a depth first search (DFS) order to reduce the amount of resources required for specific queries that may later be required. Several types of queries, including determining the parent of a node, determining all of the children of a node, determining the immediate children of a node, and determining all of the ancestors of a node may be easily accomplished using the ID numbers.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2004Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Vijay Deshmukh, Benjamin Swartzlander, Barry Schwartz
