  • Patent number: 7453818
Abstract: Potential forwarding loops in bridged networks are detected. A switch monitors the movement of packet addresses in the forwarding table to different ports. If the port associated with an address changes multiple times in a short time duration, then a potential forwarding loop is detected, and a loop corrector is notified to take appropriate action to correct the problem, such as, but not limited to changing the state of a port to a blocking state or disabling an interface, etc. If there are multiple movements outside the short time duration, they may be correct movements adjusting to the actual reconfiguration of a network, and thus, these movements are effectively filtered out of consideration.

  • Patent number: 7454516
Abstract: Resources are partitioned via a virtual partitioning system to distribute the resources over a plurality of resource servers. A virtual partition table can be kept at each of a set of resource managers handling requests for resources in tandem. When a resource is requested, a virtual partition value is calculated algorithmically, and the value is mapped to a resource component via the virtual partition table. The resource component encapsulates information indicating on which of the resource servers the resource resides and can provide a component for performing operations on the resource even though the requestor does not have information about where the resource resides. The resources can be repartitioned by modifying the virtual partition table, thus allowing the addition of additional resource servers to the system while the resources remain available. Additional resource types can be added without reengineering the system.

  • Patent number: 7454476
Abstract: A network peripheral device connected to a network via a router obtains remote servicing instructions over the network. Initially, a first packet sent from a remote service organization is received by a network peripheral device via the network, the first packet including a request for servicing information from the network peripheral device. Next a second packet is sent automatically upon receipt of the first packet from the network peripheral device to the remote service organization via the network, the second packet including the requested peripheral servicing information. Thereafter, a third packet sent from the remote service organization to the network peripheral device via the network is received by the network peripheral device, the third packet including an instruction to execute a peripheral servicing function. Finally, the peripheral servicing function is executed by the network peripheral device automatically in response to the third packet.

Abstract: An approach for establishing secure multicast communication among multiple members that participate in a multicast group is disclosed. In one feature, multiple multicast proxy service nodes (MPSNs) are defined and control when members join or leave the multicast group. The MPSNs are logically represented by a first binary tree in which each node of the first binary tree is associated with a domain of a directory service and one or more of the MPSNs. A second binary tree is created that has leaf nodes representing each member. The second binary tree is stored in a domain of the directory service with a root node that represents one or more of the MPSNs. The members can each establish multicast communication and serve as a key distribution center. When a member joins the multicast group, a new group session key is determined by replicating a branch of the second binary tree.

Abstract: A system for rapidly switching at least one virtual local area network (VLAN) from a first loop-free topology to a second loop-free topology in response to a failure within the first loop-free topology. Each VLAN has one “logical” VLAN which represents the network entities organized into the VLAN and a set of “physical” VLANs each having its own VLAN designation. For each physical VLAN, a different loop-free topology is defined, although only one physical VLAN is “active” at any given time. Messages associated with the logical VLAN are tagged with the designation of the currently active physical VLAN, and forwarded along its loop-free topology. Upon detecting a failure in the loop-free topology, the logical VLAN is rapidly switched to the loop-free topology defined by a second, back-up physical VLAN. Following the switch, messages associated with the logical VLAN are tagged with the designation of this back-up VLAN and are forwarded along its loop-free topology.

  • Publication number: 20080215713
Abstract: A system and method for enforcing change control in operations performed by operational management products (OMPs) are provided. The system and method automate the checking of a request-for-change (RFC) state by an OMP when the OMP is installed in an environment where a change management database (CMDB) has been installed and certain resources or operations have been placed under strict change control. The OMPs of the illustrative embodiments require an RFC identifier to be specified when a change operation of the OMP is invoked. The RFC identifier is used by the OMP to access a service management system so that the OMP may determine if the RFC identifier is valid, IT resources are in the correct state, and the change is scheduled to be performed at the current time. If these checks are passed, then the change operation associated with the RFC is permitted to occur.

  • Publication number: 20080215558
Abstract: A method of managing configuration changes in a data processing system, particularly a network wherein software products (250) must be distributed to client workstations. The method provides the definition of reference models (220e-220d) arranged in a tree (215); each reference model includes configuration elements (such as software products and/or hardware features and their desired target status) for the corresponding client workstations (subscribers). A target configuration (230) of the client workstations associated with each reference model is determined by inheriting the configuration elements of the parent reference models. A list of actions (245) to be carried out on each client workstation for reaching the corresponding target configuration is determined by comparing the target configuration with a current configuration of the client workstation stored in a corresponding inventory (245).

Abstract: A service interruption time is shortened in redundancy switching, thereby to render a vocal service of good quality, in addition to a data service of good quality by a server. In case of redundancy switching, an IP filter is set in a standby system server, and the standby system server is given the same IP address as an IP address given to an operation system server and is thereafter shifted into an operating state. On the other hand, the original operation system server deletes the given IP address and is thereafter shifted from an operating state into a standby state. The original standby system server releases the set IP filter, and thereafter starts the provision of a service.

  • Patent number: 7420934
Abstract: A network connection of an information handling system is recovered after configuration of network communications components in an incorrect manner by adjusting the configuration of the network communication components. For instance, a network interface card (NIC) configured with an incorrect IP address has the IP addresses of other NICs of the information handling system applied to determine if network communication is supported. If application of each IP address fails to recover communication, the NIC adjusts to a dynamic network address, sends a configuration failure message, receives new configuration information and applies the new configuration information to establish network communication through a static network address.

  • Patent number: 7421487
Abstract: Techniques are described for centralized management of quality of service (QoS) characteristics of network data flows. A service management system maintains a database that associates access information, such as a username and password, with QoS information. A router of other network device associates a data flow with access information, and queries the service management system with the access information to obtain the QoS information. The router forwards data of the data flow in accordance with the QoS information obtained from the service management system. As the access information may be a username and password, an existing system, such as a Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) system, may easily be adapted for use as the service management system. As a result, QoS information may easily be centrally managed for numerous routers or other network devices.

  • Patent number: 7421485
Abstract: An interface permitting users (i) to create a group (also referred to as a “source”) containing configuration statements and (ii) to direct the inheritance of that group's statements in the rest of the configuration information (also referred to as a “target”). The same group can be applied to different sections of the configuration information. Different sections of one group's configuration statements can be inherited in different places in the configuration information. Supporting such configuration groups allows users to create smaller, more logically constructed configuration files, thereby making it easier to configure and maintain data forwarding device software. For example, users can group together statements that are repeated in many places in the configuration, such as when configuring interfaces, and thereby limit updates to just the group.
