Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein provide a control device and a method executing thereon for allocating network bandwidth to users accessing a controlled network. In response to a user connecting to the control device using a user device, the control device obtains a user bandwidth allocation profile for that user based on user credentials. The user bandwidth allocation profile may be stored local or remote to the control device. A provisioning module running on the control device can map attributes in the user bandwidth allocation profile to a traffic control rule and associate the traffic control rule with the user based on the user credentials and considering information identifying the user device used by the user to connect to the control device. A traffic conditioning module running on the control device can regulate the network bandwidth usage by the user utilizing the traffic control rule associated with the user.

Abstract: A network of PCs includes an I/O channel adapter and network adapter, and is configured for management of a distributed cache memory stored in the plurality of PCs interconnected by the network. The use of standard PCs reduces the cost of the data storage system. The use of the network of PCs permits building large, high-performance, data storage systems.

Abstract: A communication network is operated by determining whether a network element can be trusted and monitoring traffic associated with the network element based on whether the network element can be trusted. At least some of the monitored traffic may be selected for examination based on the degree of trust for the network element. At least some of the monitored and/or examined traffic is selected to be blocked based on the degree of trust for the network element.

Abstract: Techniques are described for providing information about a current state that is modeled with multiple state attributes. In some situations, the providing of information includes receiving from first and second sources indications of ability to supply values for, respectively, an indicated one of the state attributes and another of the state attributes. In such situations, after receiving an indication of the indicated attribute from a first client, the providing of information further includes determining that the first source is available to supply a value for the indicated attribute, obtaining from the first source an indication of the value and information describing the indicated value, determining based at least in part on the descriptive information whether the indicated value is appropriate to be supplied to the client, and supplying the indicated value to the client when it is determined that the indicated value is appropriate.

Abstract: A cloud enablement aggregation proxy (CEAP) receives and processes audit data from audited resources before such data is stored in a database. The CEAP manages log data for resources hosted in a multi-tenant shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., a compute cloud). A method for managing log data begins by the proxy aggregating and normalizing log information received from a plurality of the resources. The aggregated and normalized log information is then parsed to identify a tenant associated with each of a set of transactions. For each of the set of transactions, the CEAP annotates log data associated with the tenant and the particular transaction to include a tenant-specific identifier. An optional tenant separation proxy (TSP) separates the annotated log data on a per tenant basis prior to storage, and the tenant-specific log data may be stored in per tenant data structures or dedicated tenant log event databases to facilitate subsequent compliance or other analysis.

Abstract: Process management techniques using a representation state transfer architecture that manages a given process in a data-centric manner are disclosed. By way of one example, a method of managing a given process in a data-centric manner in a client/server environment, comprising at least one client and at least one server, comprises the following steps. The server obtains from the client at least one request associated with the given process. In response to the request obtained from the client, the server generates an entity, wherein the generated entity is represented in terms of a data model and a lifecycle model associated therewith, wherein the lifecycle model comprises states and state transitions with each transition caused by one or more activities in the given process, and wherein the given process is represented as a collection of communicating entities. The server sends a response to the at least one request to the client, wherein the response is based at least in part on the generated entity.

Abstract: System, method, and tangible computer-readable storage media are disclosed for providing a brokering service for compute resources. The method includes, at a brokering service, polling a group of separately administered compute environments to identify resource capabilities and information, each compute resource environment including the group of managed nodes for processing workload, receiving a request for compute resources at the brokering service system, the request for compute resources being associated with a service level agreement (SLA) and based on the resource capabilities across the group of compute resource environments, selecting compute resources in one or more of the group of compute resource environments. The brokering service system receives workload associated with the request and communicates the workload to the selected resources for processing.

Abstract: Method and device for managing resource consumption in a computer network providing communication between plural devices, in which resources are provided to the plural devices. The method includes enforcing at least one of globally, per-device, per-device group, per-user group, and per-user policy management for managing consumption of the resources by the devices, distributing a task of managing of the resource consumption between the devices, and proxying in at least one proxy server communications between peers and the devices even when a device becomes temporarily disconnected from the network environment.

If the usage is a reuse and there is saved application data, storage in which the application data has been saved is acquired from the application data table, and a combination of a server and storage which satisfies the requested resource amount and can access the application data is determined by referring to a resource table.

Abstract: An address distribution method is disclosed by the present invention, in which two Broadband Remote Access Servers (BRAS) which are mutually backup devices respectively occupy part of the address resources in a shared address pool, and the method includes: when detecting a user online, a BRAS selecting an address from the corresponding part of address resources in the shared address pool and distributing the address to the user; and the BRAS sending a notification message to the backup device, and informing the backup device of the address occupied by the user. A BRAS and an address distribution system is further disclosed by the present invention, and the problem of address collision generated when a pair of BRASs which are mutually backup devices distribute the addresses to their respective user in the dual-server hot backup scenario is solved by the method, device and system of the present invention.

The technique also includes generating, using the data processing system, a notice to allocate resources associated with the web-accessible resource to service the anticipated flash crowd.

Abstract: A content transfer service manager node of a computer network manages the transfer of content over the network from a content provider node to a user node. The characteristics of the configuration of the user node are determined, including the user nodes capabilities with respect to downloading content and processing downloaded content. The service manager arranges a content transfer that is particularly suited for the hardware, software, and communication capabilities of the user node.

A plurality of network components are established to transmit given events of a plurality of protocol-level events to at least one of the domain of the telecommunications operator and the domain of the third party telecommunications application provider. The composite service is deployed in an execution engine of the third party telecommunications application provider.

Abstract: The present invention allows similar named entities having trademarks or tradenames or other monikers in common, to market their complete electronic media identity, including web site and generic electronic mail boxes, using the same domain name which is shared without requiring sub-delegation. It satisfies both the uniqueness requirements of the current addressing system and sovereign trademark laws which have long been at odds.

Abstract: A multi-source peer content distribution system transfers content files from multiple, distributed peer computers to any requesting computer. The content distribution network coordinates file transfers through a mediation system including a content catalog and a host broker system. The content catalog contains an identification of each content file, the segmented subunits of each file, and the peer caches to which the subunits have been distributed. The host broker system receives content file requests issued over a network from requesting computers. In response, manifest files identifying the request corresponding content subunits and distributed cache locations are returned. The requesting computers can then retrieve and assemble the corresponding content subunits from the peer computers to obtain the requested content file.

Abstract: An information acquisition section acquires application halfway information, user preference, updated date and time, real-timeness, usage frequency, usage history, radio wave state, remaining battery level, billing information or other information. A controller calculates recommendation values indicating recommended degrees to recommend the use to a user for each of a plurality of applications and for each of the contents of each of the applications, using the information that the information acquisition section acquired. Then, for example, when a specific button is pressed, the controller gives priorities to the plurality of applications and contents based on the recommendation values, causing the applications and contents to be displayed on a display of a display section 15 in the order of priority. Thus, of the various applications and contents, it makes it possible to select one that is more matched to the user preference and suitable for the terminal usage pattern.

Abstract: A server system having one or more processors and memory receives a request including server identifiers for one or more other server systems. After receiving the request, the server system determines whether enough other server systems have a predefined task-processing status for the request. When enough other server systems have the predefined task-processing status for the request, the server system performs a corresponding task-scheduling action that overrides a default task-scheduling policy as applied to the request. When the server system decides to perform a respective task-processing operation for the request, the server system sends a processing-status message to one or more of the other server systems indicating that the respective server system has undertaken performance of the respective task-processing operation for the request and performs the respective task-processing operation.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for providing VLAN capacity requirement estimation is provided. The method includes receiving at a computing system a VLAN configuration file that specifies VLAN access ports, VLAN switches and VLAN trunks in a VLAN. A target access port identifier is received at the computing system from a requestor. A target trunk and target switch corresponding to the target access port are determined at the computing system. A bandwidth contribution of the target access port to the VLAN is calculated at the computing system. The calculating is based on a least contribution algorithm that reflects an impact of provisioning the target access port with respect to trunk capacity, and is responsive to the target bandwidth requirement, the target class of service and placement of the target port in the VLAN. The bandwidth contribution is then transmitted to the requestor.

Abstract: The present invention provides a game system 100, a game terminal 10, and a server device 40. Game system 100 allows players to play a game in a unit of a group constituting one game terminal 10 that has been selected as a parent node and game terminals 10 that have been selected as child nodes. The parent node is capable of communicating with each node, and each child node is capable of communicating with the parent node. The selection of the parent node is performed by server device 40. A parent node is selected based on bandwidth notified from each game terminal 10.

Abstract: A load balancing method incorporates temporarily inactive machines as part of the resources capable of executing tasks during heavy process requests periods to alleviate some of the processing load on other computing resources. This method determines which computing resources are available and prioritizes these resources for access by the load balancing process. A snap shot of the resource configuration and made secured along with all data on this system such that no contamination occurs between resident data on that machine and any data placed on that machine as put of the load balancing activities. After a predetermined period of time or a predetermined event, the availability of the temporary resources for load balancing activities ends. At this point, the original configuration and data is restored to the computing resource such that no trace of use of the resource in load balancing activities is detected to the user.

Abstract: Application service requests received by an application hosting framework are automatically differentiated and categorized, and resource usage patterns associated with the requests are predicted. Resource usage data points are successively extracted from the hosting framework. Elements of an initial resource usage pattern matrix are computed from the data points. An estimate for the number of categories of requests is computed from the initial resource usage pattern matrix, where the requests in each category have similar resource usage patterns. Elements of a resource usage signature matrix and request categorization matrix are computed from the estimate for the number of categories of requests and the initial resource usage pattern matrix.

When autonomic management capabilities are identified, an autonomic management rule for management of the network resource may be generated and sent, over a network, for receipt and use by the identified self-managing resource.

Abstract: For allowing a very efficient use of available port space without requesting clients to interrupt ongoing sessions a method for operating a network, particularly an IP (Internet Protocol) network or mobile network is disclosed, wherein a network address and at least one port range associated to the network address and including ports or port numbers are assigned to a client by an address and/or port range manager. The method is characterized in that one or more port ranges will be marked by the manager with an attribute that signals to the client not to allocate any more ports or port numbers in marked port ranges. Further, a network is described, preferably for carrying out the above mentioned method.

Abstract: An optimization problem models the dynamic placement of applications on servers under two types of simultaneous resource requirements, those that are dependent on the loads placed on the applications and those that are independent. The demand (load) for applications changes over time and the goal is to satisfy all the demand while changing the solution (assignment of applications to servers) as little as possible.

Abstract: A user device starts a host operating system provided on the user device, when the user device is powered on, and launches a hypervisor with the host operating system. The user device also launches a first guest operating system, provided on the user device, with the hypervisor of the user device, and controls, via the hypervisor, resource usage by the first guest operating system. The user device further provides an interface to display the first guest operating system to a user of the user device, and provides, via the hypervisor, available resource information, associated with the user device, to a management server.

Abstract: Techniques for policy and identity-based workload provisioning are presented. Identities for requestors or workloads and identities for workloads are tied to specific policies. The specific policies are evaluated based on a stage of readiness for resources within a resource pool and based on resource identities for the resources within the resource pool. Resources are then dynamically provisioned based on the identity-based policy evaluation to handle workloads from the resource pool.

Abstract: Systems and methods for distributing computing resources utilize a base module having certain processing resources. A peripheral module is communicatively connected to the base module and is configured to utilize processing resources of the base module using one or more input/output devices connected to the peripheral module. The peripheral module uses a minimum of power, utilizes only enough computing resources to pass input/output signals between the input/output devices at the peripheral module and the base module, and provides access to an additional session of the operating system of the base module without requiring that a separate instance of the operating system be loaded into memory of the base module. The peripheral module may serve essentially as an intelligent mounting bracket.

Abstract: A communication network design circuit can derive a path and a necessary link capacity for multiple point communication service permitting arbitrary communication within a predetermined range of communication amount by providing traffic amount of data in-flowing through an ingress node and traffic amount of data flowing out through an egress node. The communication network designing circuit has setting means for setting a mathematical programming problem for deriving the multiple point communication service and optimizing means for solving the mathematical programming problem set by the setting means and obtaining the path for the multiple point communication service.

Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for managing cache allocation between a primary storage and a secondary storage. The system includes a device with a primary storage, secondary storage, and cache manager. The method includes downloading a web resource, storing the web resource in the primary storage, determining the amount of time required to download the web resource, and determining the amount of time required to retrieve the web resource from the secondary storage. If the amount of time required to retrieve the web resource from the secondary storage is less than the amount of time required to download the web resource, the method stores the web resource in the secondary storage. Additionally, web resources may be moved from the secondary storage to the primary storage based on their likelihood of being utilized.

The object comprises the request, an exception criterion, and a recovery operation. The method continues with a step of determining that the server computer system is unable to fulfill the request due to an exception which meets the exception criterion. The method concludes with a step of applying the recovery operation to resolve the exception. In an embodiment, the server computer system comprises a resource management system for a shared computing environment and the object comprises a resource request object. The resource request object comprises a resource request, the exception criteria, and the recovery operation. The resource request indicates resources requested from the shared computing environment by a start time and for a time period.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for autonomic control and optimization of computing systems. A plurality of component models for one or more components in an autonomic computing system are maintained in a system level database. These component models are obtained from a source external to the management server including the components associated with the models. Component models are added or removed from the database or updated as need. A system level management server in communication with the database utilizes the component models maintained in the system level database and generic component models as needed to compute an optimum state of the autonomic computing system. The autonomic computing system is managed in accordance with the computed optimum state.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a peer of a peer-to-peer network to search for an available resource includes organizing peers of the peer-to-peer network in a hierarchical structure based upon locality of the peers. A request for the available resource is received at a parent from a peer as a request bit string. An aggregate availability bit string representing an aggregate of resources available at all children associated with the parent is accessed to determine if one or more children of the parent are able to fulfill the resource request. The determination is by performing a logical operation with bits of the request bit string and bits of aggregate availability bit string. When more than one child of the parent is able to provide the requested resource, a child with available resource that is closest to the peer requesting the resource is identified. The available resource of the identified child is used to satisfy the resource request of the peer.

Abstract: To predict edges in a non-cumulative graph, based on a sequence of non-cumulative previous occurrences of the graph, the sequence of non-cumulative previous occurrences of the graph is obtained, and topological properties of each of the previous occurrences of the graph are extracted. Topological similarities between each of the previous occurrences of the graph are computed based on the topological properties. The edges of the graph are predicted by computing a score for each possible edge of the graph, based upon the topological similarities.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method establish communication with a target device within a computer system using an in-band communication protocol. Based on identification information received from the target device in accordance with a standard information exchange convention, a device manager identifies a nonstandard information exchange convention. A handler loaded into the device manager facilitates communication between a device caller and the target device using the nonstandard information exchange convention.

Abstract: A method comprises observing communication through a virtualized interface between at least one virtual machine (VM) and a driver domain. Based on the observed communication through the virtualized interface, a weighted amount of communication between the VM and the driver domain is determined for each of the VM(s), wherein the weighted amount is based at least in part on at least one characteristic of the observed communication, such as directional flow and/or size of packets in the communication. Another method comprises evaluating CPU utilization of a target network driver domain in processing communications having different characteristics, and deriving corresponding weighting for the different communication characteristics. The derived weighting for the different communication characteristics are employed within a communication monitor that observes communication between virtual machines and the target network driver domain.
