Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention provides a system that automatically acquires data from an application and imports the data into a second application. During operation, the system receives at a data-acquisition tool a command from a user to acquire data from the application. In response to the command, the system overlays a semi-transparent layer over at least a portion of a display which is generated by the application, so that the data within the display is still visible to the user. Next, the system receives a drawing command from the user to draw a shape around an item of data within the display. In response to the drawing command, the system draws a shape around the item of data within the display, wherein the shape is drawn on the semi-transparent layer. The system then acquires the item of data bounded by the shape.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for annotating text displayed by an electronic reader application. In one embodiment a method includes detecting user selection of a graphical representation of text displayed by a device, displaying a window based on the user selection, the window including a selectable element for the user to annotate displayed text associated with the user selection. The method may further include detecting a user selection of a selectable element to record audio data based on the window, initiating audio recording based on the user selection to record audio data, and storing recorded audio data by the device as an annotation to the user selected text.

Abstract: Systems (and corresponding methodologies) that annotate experience data in real-time are provided. The real-time annotated experience data can be employed in accordance with augmented reality systems which are capable of overlaying virtual data upon real-world data. The system employs ‘smart-tags’ that are capable of identifying data that relates to and/or is associated with the real-world scenarios and situations.

Abstract: Methods, computer-readable media, and systems for populating an electronic clinical document capable of receiving multiple types of data are provided. In one embodiment, dictation audio input is embedded directly into one or more sections of an electronic clinical document along with other data types, such as structured user input, free-text input, or system-generated input. An electronic clinical document having embedded dictation audio and other data types can receive transcribed text corresponding to the embedded dictation audio.

Abstract: This disclosure provides an electronic book and a method for displaying an annotation used for displaying an annotation image at an electronic book. The annotation image is located at an annotation position of an electronic book document and is capable of being displayed on a screen of the electronic book when the electronic book document is displayed in a pre-set font size. The method includes the following steps. When the electronic book document is displayed in another font size and the annotation position is within a current displaying range of the screen, an annotation reminder is displayed; the electronic book document is displayed in the pre-set font size and the annotation image is displayed at the annotation position as well according to an annotation activating signal.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method and system for reconstructing a clean document from annotated document images and/or extracting annotations therefrom are provided. The method includes receiving a set of at least two annotated document images into computer memory, selecting a representative image from the set of annotated document images, performing a global alignment on each of the set of annotated document images with respect to the selected representative image, and forming a consensus document image based at least on the aligned annotated document images. A clean document based at least on the consensus document image is then formed which can be used for extracting the annotations.

Abstract: An exemplary method of saving images, the method comprising: selecting a set of characters displayed on the web page to be use as the name of the image to be saved; dragging and releasing the character set above the image. Saving the image with the character set being the name of the image file.

Abstract: Allowing annotations to occur remotely from the device in which they are viewed enables the optimal viewing device and optimal annotation device for generating annotations. Specifically, the annotation systems allow a user to associate annotations with one or more portions of an object. An object identifier is created to identify one or more objects. This object identifier is then forwarded to the annotation device. On the annotation device, the user can associate annotations with a portion of the object based on either a textual or a graphical technique. Upon completion of the annotations, the system synchronizes the annotations with the object based on the object identifier and the selection portion.

Abstract: The present invention is related to a computer system that provides a web page to a requestor over a network. Aspects of the present invention include receiving by the computer system a request to access a web page and in response, determining whether a descriptor for the requested web page is in a session memory. If the descriptor is not in the session memory, it is retrieved from a database and the stored in the session memory. From there, the descriptor is used to determine whether the web page should be retrieved and returned to the requestor. By storing the descriptor in session memory, additional accesses to the database can be avoided when the descriptor is used for subsequent tasks.

Abstract: A method and system provides for a single-pass review and feedback of a document. During audio playback of the document to be reviewed, voice-activated recording of feedback and submission of feedback relative to the location in the original document are accomplished. This provides for a fully integrated, single pass review and feedback of documentation to occur.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a system and method of collecting information and associated context. Information and associated context are collected by monitoring at least one application program executable using the computing system, so as to detect one or more events associated with the at least one application program; identifying contextual information corresponding to the detected one or more events; and storing information associated with the at least one detected event, the stored information including the identified contextual information.

Abstract: Correlative multi-label image annotation may entail annotating an image by indicating respective labels for respective concepts. In an example embodiment, a classifier is to annotate an image by implementing a labeling function that maps an input feature space and a label space to a combination feature vector. The combination feature vector models both features of individual ones of the concepts and correlations among the concepts.

Abstract: A method and system for generating workflow messages based on adding annotations to a file repository or database independent of an original document that they annotate. By separately storing the annotations in a searchable annotation repository, original documents can be preserved unchanged while still providing the ability to comment on the original document. By generating workflow messages, a system can track who has reviewed a document, whose proposed changes and/or comments require action by another person, and if everyone has reviewed the documents within the time constraints established.

Abstract: The present invention relates to embedding metadata with user interface messages. One method embodiment includes: encoding the metadata into a sequence of non-displayable characters; combining the displayable data and the sequence of non-displayable characters; and sending the combined displayable data and sequence of non-displayable characters to a client for display. In examples, the displayable characters may be displayable Unicode characters, and the non-displayable characters may be non-displayable Unicode characters, such as the left-to-right mark (0x200E) and the right-to-left mark (0x200F).

Abstract: The present invention is a system and a method for selecting an appropriate location for displaying messages, such as graphic or textual advertisements, on the display screen of users of electronic devices. Embodiments of the present invention employ algorithms for analyzing the graphic content of the screen in real-time to select the most appropriate position for placing the message. In addition, according to some embodiments of the present invention the activities of the user are also monitored to enhance the suitability of the selected position of the advertisements. The algorithm constantly monitors screen information and user activity and removes the message whenever the selected area is no longer appropriate for displaying the message.

Abstract: A reviewer opens or imports a document into a document viewer. The reviewer can then create various annotations to the document. The reviewer then has the option of assigning each annotation to a specific recipient or group of recipients. The document viewer can be implemented as a centralized application where recipients to whom annotations have been assigned are notified that a document is available for viewing. Upon receipt of this notification, recipients can log on to the document viewer to view the document containing the annotations specific to each recipient. Alternatively, the document viewer can be implemented as a stand-alone application where recipients to whom annotations have been assigned are sent the document showing only those annotations intended for each specific recipient.

Abstract: A system for distributing images creates a self-sufficient, self-consistent medical imaging and other medical information transfer file that contains image files and corresponding data sets that are bundled with an image viewer application. The medical image and data transfer file is prepared using object serialization and contains a deserialization application. The transfer file is created at an origination location and transmitted to a destination device as a packaged file over a computer network. The destination device receives the packaged file from the origination location and executes the viewer application with the image files and the data sets by opening the packaged file alone, without the need to run any other imaging/viewer application at the destination device. The viewer application has image viewing panes, an annotation tool, and image manipulation tools.

Abstract: A system and process for handling clips with annotations is provided. A user annotates a document. The system gathers context information regarding the clip and displays the clip or clips with annotations to the user. A system for showing clips of content and annotations may include an input for receiving content and annotations, a processor creating a renderable image having the clips with at least one of the clips being a combination of two or more annotations, and an output for outputting the renderable image. A method of displaying clips may include receiving at least two sets of an annotation and related content, filtering the received, combining the filtered output, and displaying a combination of the filtered output.

Abstract: A system and associated method for collaboratively developing information. An information delivery system for information regarding rapidly evolving software products builds an initial information set and a vocabulary. The initial information set is released for annotations on the information set by contributing users. The vocabulary defines a group of terms and respectively associated confidence level that can be used in describing annotations. An access control list may be employed in authenticating contributing users in accessing the information delivery system to assure reliability of annotations. A reliable annotation having a confidence level satisfying a threshold confidence level is integrated with the information set according to an approval by a content owner.

Abstract: A method for organizing categories of digital content in a peer-to-peer computer network includes automatically collecting tag metadata when a user creates a tag for digital content stored in a peer computer system. Once the tag is created and the tag metadata is collected, both the tag and the tag metadata are stored in a server that is accessible to each of the peer computer systems. Here, the tag is automatically classified by its tag metadata such that the digital content can be accessed based on its tag metadata.

Abstract: A written document (hereinafter referred to as a “work,” on electronic format which includes, stories, novels, education texts, biographies, compilations, collections, anthologies, tracts, and any other traditional format for relatively extensive texts) provides access to reference, bibliography and/or definition material through an electronic software capability associated with the work. Depending upon reader access information or characteristics (e.g., age, grade, proficiency, or position within the work or any other identifiable reader characteristic or access limitation), any request for reference material, definitions, explanations, translations, or other material provided in the associated software capability is automatically limited by system acknowledgement of the reader access information or characteristics. As the reader's access information or characteristics change, the quality and/or quantity and/or format of requested information with respect to a work changes.

Abstract: Highlighting of content is aggregated across a plurality of users, thus enabling the content to be presented with highlights that represent the collective highlighting of the users. Highlighted content may be presented to the users with varying levels of prominence. Accordingly, depending on the aggregated highlight information, some content may be presented with a highlight that is more or less prominent than highlighting for other content. Prominence data associated with highlighted content may include a score indicative of a strength of the highlight for the highlighted content. A score indicating a stronger highlight causes the highlight to be presented with greater prominence. The score may be incremented, possibly on a weighted bases, to represent the combined highlighting of different users. Highlights may assume many different forms, including visual forms (such as colors, lines, borders, fonts, icons, etc.), audio forms and tactile forms.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for organizing and selecting structures used to generate forms for capturing information as annotations made for a variety of different type data objects are provided. Some embodiments allow annotation structures to be associated with specific pairings of data object types and user roles via entries in a configuration file. When a user selects a set of one or more data objects for annotation, the configuration file may be accessed to determine a proper annotation structure for use in generating an annotation form based on the selected data objects and a role of the user.

Abstract: A method of presenting a digital work includes displaying a portion of the digital work on a display screen under a set of display conditions, and providing one or more invariant location reference identifiers corresponding to the portion of the digital work on the display screen. The invariant location reference identifiers are separate from the digital work, and each invariant location reference identifier is provided along with the corresponding portion of the digital work, regardless of the display conditions under which the portion of the digital work is displayed.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method, system, and program product for modeling processes such as business processes. Specifically, under the present invention, a process having multiple variations is modeled as a placeholder process, and is associated with an annotation that maps the multiple variations to different contexts of the placeholder process. Thereafter, process variations can be generated based on the different contexts of the placeholder process. Integrity checks can also be performed to determine if any of the process variations has an error so that the generation of any corresponding process will be prevented.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for transferring selected open browser tabs from a host computer to a client computer. The method includes copying a selected number of hyperlink addresses from a plurality of hyperlink addresses associated with a plurality of selected open browser tabs in a first browser of the host computer. A hyperlink import module of the client computer is activated for transferring the copied hyperlink addresses from the host computer. Before the transfer can occur, the client computer is authenticated. After authentication, the user of the client computer selects a subset of the copied hyperlink addresses from the host computer. Only the subset of the copied hyperlink addresses is transferred from the host computer to the client computer. The client user opens the subset of the copied hyperlink addresses in a second browser of the client computer for displaying.

Abstract: An electronic book reader and e-book reading program for a device having network connectivity capability, the program including a voice annotation feature that enables a user reading an electronic book to highlight selected text and to record a voice annotation related to that highlighted material. The highlighted text and related (linked) voice annotation are saved as a “Voice Note” file, which the user can review, sort, or delete as desired.

Abstract: An exemplary medication order processing system (10) includes a plurality of nursing stations (12, 14, 16). Physician orders prescribing medications for patients are faxed from the nursing stations to a computer which is included in an interchange fax station (28) located at the pharmacy. Physician orders for medications are selectively sent to either a priority or normal fax number based on the urgency associated with delivering the medication to the patient. The interchange fax station is operative to prioritize the orders and to present them to pharmacists working at pharmacist work stations (40, 42). Pharmacist work stations are enabled to review, electronically annotate, and input orders reviewed at the pharmacy work station into a pharmacy order system of the facility. Input to the pharmacy order system results in the medication being administered to the patient.

Abstract: Annotation engines are described for handling annotations added to a base document. The annotation engines automatically classify the type of annotations, including, but not limited to: a highlight annotation; a blob annotation (comprising an enclosing-type annotation); an underline annotation; a vertical bracket annotation; a call-out annotation; and a free-note annotation. The annotation engines accept input in the form of a hierarchical tree of document elements and generate an output in the form of a hierarchical tree of annotation elements. Among other uses, a reflow engine can use the output of the annotation engines to properly reposition annotations within a layout-modified base document.

Abstract: Item selections along with user inputs are leveraged to provide users with automated item tagging. Further user interaction with additional windows and other interfacing techniques are not required to tag the item. In one example, a user selects items and begins typing a tag which is automatically associated with the selected items without further user action. Tagging suggestions can also be supplied based on a user's selection, be dynamically supplied based on a user's input action, and/or be formulated automatically based on user data and/or tags and the like associated with selections by an external source. Machine learning can also be utilized to facilitate in tag determination. This increases the value of the tagged items by providing greater item access flexibility and allowing multiple associations (or tags) with each item.

Abstract: A system, medium, and method to automatically create a dynamic image object, which can create content in image unit groups of dynamic image objects. The system may include a template selection module that selects a template from an image unit group corresponding to a desired content group that includes content, a content-arrangement module that arranges the content in the selected template, and a dynamic image object supply module that supplies a dynamic image object in which the content is arranged.

Abstract: Processes and apparatuses print documents containing embedded interactive code (EIC) information by the use of custom postscript commands that are printer independent, with little overhead when printing, smaller print file size, and faster print times. In order to determine the postscript commands, the EIC array may be represented as a bit for every point, as EIC symbols in which each kind of EIC symbol is a glyph of a font, or as graphics procedures. The postscript approach may be selected based on memory and printing time requirements.

Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for generating quotations from a reference document on a touch sensitive display device or other handheld device, including the following steps: (a) receiving a first input from a user designating a first point in a captured image of the reference document to define a first corner of a crop rectangle; (b) receiving a second input from the user designating a second point in the captured image to define a second corner of the crop rectangle, wherein the first input is released before the second input is initiated; (c) cropping the captured image from the first point to the second point of the crop rectangle when the second input is released to generate an image quotation; and (f) generating a quotation data object comprising the image quotation and a bibliographical reference to a referenced section of the reference document which contains the image quotation. After the image quotation has been cropped, it may be annotated using a similar two-touch method.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for developing images for use in a graphical user interface. In one implementation, the method includes displaying a graphical user interface on a display device, and providing an operating system on a computer that is in communication with the display device. The operating system includes an imaging object structure that is an abstract base class from which subclasses of text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects are derivable. The subclasses of text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects are used to respectively generate text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects for display in the graphical user interface.

Abstract: A computer implemented method, a data processing system, and a computer program publish an audio annotation of a media signal. A media player plays a media signal. The media player then records an audio annotation to the media signal. Responsive to recording the audio annotation to the media signal, the media player records an identifier to be associated with the media signal. The audio annotation is then published to a social networking host.

Abstract: Systems and techniques are disclosed that allow a user to enter a query in a query input region of a graphical user interface and respond to the query by automatically directing it to an appropriate database, saving a user from having to choose among the myriad databases within the system. The system provides shareable folders for not only selected documents or excerpts from documents, but also for annotations and markups associated with documents. The system also enables a user to set permissions as to whether to allow documents, as well annotations and markups, private or publicly available to other users. Further, the system allows a user to specify an action that is to occur once a particular event occurs affecting a document, annotation or markup.

Abstract: A redaction process obtains redaction data indicating content to be redacted in a document. In addition, the redaction process obtains non-redaction data indicating content not to be redacted in the document. Furthermore, the redaction process obtains proximity data indicating proximate expressions to be matched against the document. In this manner, the redaction process processes the redaction data, non-redaction data and proximity data against the document to produce a redact list and a potential list. Upon receiving user selections from both the redact and the potential lists, the redaction process applies a redaction function to the document to produce a redacted version of the document.

Abstract: A system that allows multimedia elements to be annotated by other multimedia and non-multimedia elements in a web based format. The multimedia elements can be video, audio, documents of different formats and any other format that may be delivered through the interne or private intranets.

Abstract: A method for detection of page numbers in a document includes identifying a plurality of text fragments associated with a plurality of pages of a document. From the identified text fragments, at least one sequence is identified. Each identified sequence includes a plurality of terms. Each term of the sequence is derived from a text fragment selected from the plurality text fragments. The terms of an identified sequence comply with at least one predefined numbering scheme which defines a form and an incremental state of the terms in a sequence. A subset of the identified sequences which cover at least some of the pages of the document is computed. Terms of at least some of the subset of the identified sequences are construed as page numbers of pages of the document. Additional page numbers may be identified by considering one or more features of the terms in the subset of identified sequences.

Abstract: A manual annotation system of multi-modal characteristics in multimedia files. There is provided an arrangement for selection an observation modality of video with audio, video without audio, audio with video, or audio without video, to be used to annotate multimedia content. While annotating video or audio features is isolation results in less confidence in the identification of features, observing both audio and video simultaneously and annotating that observation results in a higher confidence level.

Abstract: An automatic annotation transmission device including a memory, a processor, and a transmitter, is programmed with information related to a nearby photographic subject, and configured to transmit the information to a properly configured automatic annotation reception device. An electronic image capture device including a memory, a processor, and a receiver is configured to receive information from an automatic annotation transmission device, correlate the annotation information with one or more captured images and store the annotation information in a memory.

Abstract: An ensured workflow system for editing a consolidated file, such as a portable document formatted (PDF) file, which may be in the form of a plug-in application that communicates with a host application through an application program interface. The system comprises means for storing identifying information in association with the consolidated document indicating that the document was edited using the system, and means for storing edit information relating to each editing session. The edit information includes at least a listing of one or more edits made during the session, user information relating to the user who conducted the edit, and any comments entered by the user relating to the session.

Abstract: A processing apparatus is adapted to, when a particular action occurs, display information relevant to the action and also display an image assigned to the action. In this processing apparatus, image data of a large number of images is stored in an image storage unit, and a memory unit stores the correspondence between an image and an action when the image is assigned to the action. When a particular action occurs, a control unit performs a control such that the image assigned to the action is displayed. When a list of images stored in the image storage unit is displayed, the control unit controls displaying such that any action related to each image is explicitly shown in the list of images.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for indicating workspace awareness using one or more of a write shadow, a read shadow, and/or a shadowbar providing an indication of operations performed at associated locations by various users accessing a same document. A write shadow may be used to indicate a position in a document being modified by a user. A read shadow may be used to indicate a position being viewed by a user. A shadowbar may be used to indicate areas of overlap among users with a shading and coloring indicative of a degree of overlap.

Abstract: In a system for inputting and managing document collections, the order in which documents are presented to the system dictates the organization and hierarchy for the electronically stored document collection. Users can add annotations to documents and collections by writing on a coversheet; the system scans the coversheet, reads the written material, and adds the material to the electronically stored document and/or collection. In addition, in one aspect the invention provides a mechanism for granting different levels of access to different individuals, by generating coversheets that point to the same collection but that provide different levels of access to the collection.
