  • Patent number: 8458611
Abstract: Tickers are populated with location-based information that is selected according to the geographic location of communication devices. The location of a communication device is identified based on a GPS system, proximity to transmitters in a wireless network, user input, or using other techniques. Location-appropriate content is obtained either in real-time from the network or from a local data store at the communication device. In general location-based, context-aware content can be displayed on tickers associated with a variety of communication devices, including mobile communication devices and “immobile” or stationary personal computers. When a ticker item is selected from the ticker, a location associated with the selected ticker item and/or a location of the communication device is used to generate a map that is displayed on the display of the device to the user.

  • Patent number: 8423898
Abstract: An apparatus and method for performing calculations is provided so that a paradigm of a tape is utilized in a calculator application that executes on a computing platform and which is configured to enable a user to see and interact with multiple virtual tapes that each show numerical values and operators. Each tape functions as a user-accessible memory and a memory value may be recalled from any one tape and that value placed on any other tape. The calculator application is configured to enable the user to enter a sequence of values and operators which are all displayable on a given tape, as well as support the user's ability to edit any value or operator that was previously entered on that tape. Calculations are updated to reflect the user's edits on both the tape currently being edited and any other tape that uses the edited tape as a memory.

Abstract: The WEB Site Valuation System identifies each user's personal attribution of value to a selected WEB site. The attribution is constrained by assigning each user a predetermined number of assignable credits/tokens from which the user can draw to “deposit” or “withdraw” previously deposited credits in the “account” of a WEB site. The tally of credits for each WEB site is then a direct indication of the value provided to users. This ultimately creates a token economy for and within the WEB, based upon user opinion of the value of WEB sites. The dynamic mapping and correlation of these value indications with the users' characteristics provides analytical data that can be used to determine the relevance of the WEB site to various socio-demographic populations, as well as the response of the users to changes in the WEB site, market forces, and/or the entire community of WEB sites.

  • Patent number: 7571391
Abstract: Methods, system and apparatus, including computer program products, for rendering a user interface in a client program. The techniques include detecting multiple changes to a user interface of a computer program, the user interface having multiple user interface elements, each change being a change to one of the multiple user interface elements; generating a rendering request for each change, each rendering request specifying the user interface element that has changed and a type of modification to be performed on the user interface element; and filtering the requests to eliminate redundant requests. The user interface can be rendered based on the filtered requests.

  • Patent number: 7546546
Abstract: Contextual desktop folders are provided in addition to a system desktop folder, thereby customized desktop folders (contextual desktop folders) are provided to a user. Thus, applications that have for example editing dialogs presented via a GUI interface, can have the dialogs customized for a computing environment providing dialog functions associated with predetermined applications. Preferably, a user or application selects files of a contextual desktop to present to the user of the application as “default” files, folders, shortcuts or applications.

  • Patent number: 7475358
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to novel techniques for showing the progress of an automated computer process, particularly through a graphical user interface (GUI). Graphical status displays are employed which show graphical time-based information, such as rate and estimated time to completion, as well as a completion portion of an automated computer process. A remaining time indicator can be shown as a time scale for the graphical completion indicator. Instantaneous and historical rate information may be graphically displayed in various novel displays.

  • Patent number: 7430724
Abstract: The timing, order, frequency or presentation attributes of content items in a ticker of a communication device are selected or determined using a scheduling system of the ticker. The location of the communication device is one of many attributes that may be used in a scoring algorithm employed by the scheduling system to determine when and how received content is displayed in the ticker. Based on the attributes that are considered by the scheduling system, ticker content is displayed on the ticker. Communication devices that can use the tickers include personal computers, set top boxes, televisions, landline telephones, cellular telephones, personal digital assistants, laptop computers and any other device that has a display device and is suitably equipped to establish communication with a network.

  • Patent number: 7409644
Abstract: A file system shell is provided. One aspect of the shell provides virtual folders which expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk. Users are able to work with the virtual folders through direct manipulation (e.g., clicking and dragging, copying, pasting, etc.). Filters are provided for narrowing down sets of items. Quick links are provided which can be clicked on to generate useful views of the sets of items. Libraries are provided which consist of large groups of usable types of items that can be associated together, along with functions and tools related to the items. A virtual address bar is provided which comprises a plurality of segments, each segment corresponding to a filter for selecting content. A shell browser is provided with which users can readily identify an item based on the metadata associated with that item.
