  • Patent number: 4049026
Abstract: An automatic bending apparatus for forming fasteners from metal wire strip, or bar stock includes a removable, axially movable, non-rotatable shaped central mandrel and a relatively rotatable faceplate mounting a bending pin disposed coaxially with the mandrel and independently axially movable relatively thereto. The apparatus includes a pair of shears positioned adjacent the mandrel along the path of movement of the stock and in advance of the mandrel and means for automatically feeding the stock. The invention is characterized in that the mandrel is substantially L-shaped and has a support rod and an arm with a U-shaped groove in the front face thereof through which the stock passes. The groove is dimensioned to closely receive the stock so that the supported portion therein is not deformed or bent during the bending operation and the external portion of the mandrel is shaped to define the curvature of the bent portions of the stock.

  • Patent number: 4048834
Abstract: A machine for forming a serpentine heat exchanger having a predetermined length from a continuously formed spine fin tubing. A supply of continuously formed spine fin tubing is directed to a forming and bending head in predetermined increments where it is bent in alternate directions about a central axis to form the serpentine heat exchanger. Prior to the bending action the portion to be bent is deformed into a cross section having its major axis parallel with the longitudinal axis of the tube and perpendicular to the central axis. The following bending operation causes the tube diameter across the major axis to decrease as the wall in the area of the outer curve migrates radially inwardly due to its failure to elongate sufficiently, in effect, the cross sectional area in the completed bent portion is substantially equal to the cross sectional area of the tube before the deforming and bending operation.

  • Patent number: 4043165
Abstract: A three-point, air-bending sheet metal bender comprising a pair of elongated U-shaped finger dies mounted parallel to one another is disclosed. The elongated finger dies are mirror images of one another (when appropriately aligned) and, prior to bending, are spaced from each other by an amount generally equal to the thickness of the sheet of metal to be bent. The elongated finger dies are laterally position adjustable such that the "finger" of one die is alignable with the "palm" of the other die and vice versa; i.e., the finger of each die is alignable with the palm of the other die. During bending, the "finger" die remains fixed and the "palm" die rotates. As the palm die rotates, sheet metal located between the two dies is bent. The direction of bending, with respect to the plane of the sheet of metal prior to bending, is determined by the die that is chosen to rotate.

  • Patent number: 4028925
Abstract: A machine having blanking, barb forming and bending stations is provided for making a coil of metal tape from a substantially planar linear strip of metal stock wherein such strip is fed in sequence to the stations in a single pass through the machine to respectively edge notch the strip into barbs, upset the barbs into inclined relation to the plane of the strip and then edge bend the strip in the plane of the strip to form it into identically angularly displaced adjoining linear segments of equal length to make a generally annular coil of barbed metal tape. The method of this invention features forming spaced openings along a longitudinal axis of a substantially planar linear strip of metal stock, positioning the strip by means of its openings and edge bending the strip in the plane of the strip adjacent its openings to form the strip into a coil having identical angularly displaced adjoining linear segments.

  • Patent number: 4022045
Abstract: A tube bending apparatus has a bed, a reciprocal feed carriage, power means to reciprocate the carriage, a first guide means at one end of the bed to receive the outer end of a first tube to be bent, mounted on said bed. Said apparatus includes a heating element on said bed outwardly of said first guide means adapted to surround the tube. The carriage is adapted to operatively engage the inner end of the tube for moving it outwardly of the bed. A bending arm at one end is pivotally mounted adjacent said one end of said bed and has gripping elements thereon to operably engage the outer end of the tube. The present improvement comprises a second guide means at the other end of said bed adapted to alternately receive the outer end of a second tube. A second heating element is mounted on said bed outwardly of said second guide means.

  • Patent number: 3974676
Abstract: A tube bending machine includes a carriage mounted rotatable chuck for grasping and positioning a length of tube with respect to the bending head of the machine. Motion of the carriage along the bed of the machine toward the bending head and rotation of the chuck relative to the carriage are both powered by a single remotely mounted motor driving an endless chain. The chain engages a drive sprocket rotatable on the carriage and gear connected to rotate the chuck. A chuck brake and a carriage distance brake are selectively energized so that when chuck rotation is prevented, the sprocket is locked to the chain and the carriage will be driven by the chain, and when carriage travel is prevented, the chuck is rotated by the chain driven sprocket. The remote motor is connected in a primary servo system to provide a closed loop drive of either the chuck rotation or the carriage travel. A closed loop brake control system is provided for each of the chuck rotation and carriage travel.

  • Patent number: 3958436
Abstract: Dynamic controls and jaw mechanism for a forming machine adapted to impart compound curvatures to a metal sheet. The setting of the machine, particularly in its first and third stages, is dynamically controlled by a tracer and transducer system whereby, as for example, the vertical and horizontal positions of the first stage relative to the second are predetermined as is the relative horizontal position of the third stage. Enhanced responsiveness is achieved by the provision of roller bearings for the heavy mechanism comprising the several stages. A new jaw mechanism is provided for pulling the sheet through the machine, the jaws being self adjusting to afford a continuous gripping pressure on the sheet.

  • Patent number: 3958440
Abstract: A universal tube bending machine includes a frame mounting an upper die clamp with a downturned channel. A support arm is pivoted to the frame and mounts a corresponding lower die clamp with an upturned tube receiving channel to grip the tube to be bent. A lower bending die is secured upon said arm outwardly of the lower die clamp, having an arcuate channel to receive the tube and of a predetermine radius corresponding to the desired bending radius for said tube. A power reciprocated bending arm including a depending die block is rotatably mounted on the frame on a center corresponding to the lower bending die, and has a downwardly opening tube engaging channel. The bending die block is adapted to rotate in the range of 1.degree. to 180.degree. making a corresponding bend in the tube. A power cylinder and rod on the frame operatively holds the arm, the lower die clamp and the lower bending die in registry with the tube during bending and thereafter is adapted to retract the lower die clamp and bending die.
