Abstract: A shaping device for producing a U-shaped conductor includes a holding portion, a feeding portion, a core metal portion and a shaping portion. The core metal portion includes a core metal and an upper guide portion. The core metal forms a die. The upper guide portion restrains upward movement of the conductor material during the shaping operation. The shaping portion includes a shaping element and a lower guide. The shaping element shapes the conductor material into the U-shape by urging the conductor material along the core metal. The lower guide restrains downward movement of the conductor material during the shaping operation. It is possible to move the shaping element downwardly after the conductor material is shaped into the U-shape. The conductor material can be fed forward without returning the shaping element to its initial position.

  • Patent number: 6644081
Abstract: A system and method for adjusting the orientation of trim tabs on a helicopter rotor blade includes a gage, a bender and a calibrator plate. The gage is secured to the calibrator plate which holds the gage in an orientation that simulates a rotor blade with trim tabs at zero degrees so that the gage can be zeroed. The gage is then removed and positioned on a rotor blade. Because the gage is supported on the blade by rollers, it is free to roll along the length of the blade and may thereby be positioned and repositioned quickly. Once in position, the bender is applied to the trim tabs adjacent to the gage and tightened using thumb screws. The handle of the bender allows the trim tabs to be adjusted while verifying that the amount of adjustment indicated by the gage dial indicator matches the preselected angle.

Abstract: A robotic bending apparatus for bending archwires and other types of elongate, bendable medical devices into a desired configuration includes a first gripping tool and a moveable gripping tool. The first gripping tool can be either fixed with respect to a base or table for the robot or positioned at the end of robot arm. The moveable gripping tool is mounted to the end of a moveable robot arm having a proximal portion also mounted to the base. The robot preferably comprises a six axis bending robot, in which the distal end of the moveable arm can move relative to the fixed gripping tool about three translational axes and three rotational axes. The gripping tools preferably incorporate force sensors which are used to determine overbends needed to get the desired final shape of the archwire. The robot may also include a resistive heating system in which current flows through the wire while the wire is held in a bent condition to heat the wire and thereby retain the bent shape of the wire.

  • Patent number: 6185975
Abstract: In an apparatus for cold bending a metal sheet for making an elongated article with a predetermined pro-file, supports are provided to receive opposite ends of the sheet being formed. A form, whose cross section defines a predetermined profile, is operated perpendicularly with respect to its longitudinal axis, so as to clamp the sheet, resting on the supports, to a stop. Bending members are carried by two plates which are mounted for oscillating on a vertical plane transversal to the form, so that the bending members rotate around spindles parallel to the stop plate. The bending members are operated in time relation with a synchronous movement of the form and of the stop, so as to fold the two ends of the sheet piece over the form.

  • Patent number: 6164107
Abstract: A crimping tool capable of forming a uniform series of deformations or crimps on a workpiece, such that at least a portion of the workpiece can be modified to acquire an arcuate shape with a predetermined radius. The crimping tool includes a pair of arms and an associated pair of jaws. The tool further includes an adjustment feature associated with one of the arms for adjusting and gaging the distance between the jaws when in a crimping position. As such, the degree of deformation or crimping that can be applied by the jaws is positively limited by the adjustment feature, which physically establishes the minimum gap width between the jaws during a crimping operation. The jaws include die members specially configured to promote accurately placed and uniform crimps in a workpiece.

Abstract: A major object of the present invention is to compensate for variations in springback angle resulting from variations in material properties from one lot to the next, for the realization of high angle accuracy bending. Based on the difference between a workpiece actual bend angle detected during bending and an estimated bend angle of a workpiece W at an arbitrary penetration point of an upper die 5, a correction value for prestored data relating to a springback behavior under a processing condition is obtained. Based on the correction value, a final penetration point of the upper die 5 is obtained.

A clamp is provided for grasping the sheet, and the clamp is moved in relation to said plates. The movement of the clamp and the relative position of said plates is coordinated, so as to slide the sheet in relation to said plates while the distance between said plates is controlled. The process includes pulling the sheet by one end so as to separate an initial section from the plane containing the calibration opening and thus pass the sheet through the calibration opening while the plates are kept supported against said sheet, so as to vary continuously the thickness of the sheet while the sheet is passed through the calibration opening.

  • Patent number: 6012312
Abstract: A double blank detector apparatus and method of operation determines the condition of when one blank, no blanks or more than two blanks are about to be fed into a press. An indicator bar advances relative to the number of blank sheets of material being detected and interrupts an infra-red light beam when only blank of material has been detected. Under this preferred condition, a signal is produced which allows a press located adjacent to the double blank detector to continue its stamping operation. Alternatively, if either a no blank or a double blank condition is sensed, then the indicator bar advances accordingly, thus not interrupting the infra-red light beam. During this condition, a signal is produced indicative of the situation thus notifying the operator that there is a problem and stopping the press from cycling.

  • Patent number: 6003353
Abstract: For the purpose of making it possible to estimate the spring back angle and/or final driving position of the driving die with good accuracy even if there are some variations from lot to lot in the material characteristics values, and thereby achieve bending with extremely high angle accuracy, the actual bending angle is directed at no less than two provisional driving positions of the driving die during the bending of a workpiece. Based on the relationship of the amount of change in the driving amount to the amount of change in the actual bending angle relating to those provisional driving positions, a determination is made of the relationship of the spring back angle to the target bending angle of the workpiece for the respective working conditions of the bending concerned which are stored in advance. From this relationship, a determination is made for the final driving position of the driving die, and the driving die is driven to that determined final driving position.
