Abstract: A structural core and associated method of forming such structure is disclosed. The structure includes a single layer of at least two rows of hollow pyramid-like structures. The hollow pyramid-like structures dampen acoustic noise and provide a truss-like structure that provides a high level of stiffness against transverse loads, shear stresses and side-loading. The hollow pyramid-like structures preferably have upward facing and downward facing open bases, and are formed in rows and columns. To aid in sound attenuation, the single layer is formed from a partially porous material, a woven thermoplastic, woven carbon fiber, fiberglass and paper. To provide additional structural integrity, the single layer is formed from a solid non-porous material such as a metal. The structural core may be included within outer panels to form acoustical or structural panels.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a valve for an internal combustion engine, comprises: (i) a primary step of forging a bulging portion at one end of a rod material to form a generally disk-shape valve head of the valve having a tapered periphery; (ii) an thickness adjustment step of machining an excessively thick portion of the valve head; and (iii) a secondary step of forging a peripheral region of the valve head to create radial slip deformations therein to form a valve face of the valve head. In the step of thickness adjustment, only the front end of the disk-shape valve head is machined without harming dense grain flow lines induced in the tapered face (16a) in the primary forging while advantageously saving the valve material and reducing thickness adjustment time. In the secondary forging, the hardness of the valve face is further enhanced.

Abstract: Guide wire devices fabricated from a linear pseudo-elastic Ni—Ti alloy and methods for their manufacture. The Ni—Ti alloy that includes nickel, titanium, and about 3 atomic % (at %) to about 30 at % niobium (Nb). Cold working the Ni—Ti alloy stabilizes the alloy's martensitic phase and yields a linear pseudo-elastic microstructure where reversion to the austenite phase is retarded or altogether blocked. The martensitic phase of cold worked, linear pseudo-elastic Ni—Ti—Nb alloy has an elastic modulus that is considerably higher than the comparable cold worked, linear pseudoelastic binary Ni—Ti alloy. This yields a guide wire device that has better torque response and steerability as compared to cold worked, linear pseudoelastic binary Ni—Ti alloy or superelastic binary Ni—Ti alloy.

  • Patent number: 4832764
Abstract: In the system, heating device (2), quenching press (4), tempering device (6), and cooling device (8) are connected one directly after the other in such a way that the workpieces (10) pass through the individual stations with specified cycle times and without heat loss. The temperature-time response during the individual treatment steps is controlled by means of a central program control in accordance with a specified program determined by testing and/or calculation. The system is especially suitable for use in the fully automatic, thermomechanical treatment in mass production of disk springs, especially those which have a greater hardness at the free ends of the lamellae than in the remaining areas.

  • Patent number: 4706869
Abstract: An attachment for a staple gun tacker having a staple driving blade is disclosed which is adapted to be used in driving and setting a rivet of the type having a pin member mounted in a headed rivet shank having an expandable workpiece piercing free end. The attachment includes a housing adapted to be frictionally engaged on the working end of a staple gun tacker and having a bore located to be generally in axial alignment with the driving blade of the staple gun tacker. A hollow flanged bushing is slidably mounted in the housing bore with a spring for biasing the bushing away from the housing to engage the shoulder of the interior of the housing and to permit retraction of the bushing into the housing against the bias of the spring. A pin punch which is axially free floating within its operative range of movement is slidably mounted in the bushing for axial movement therein.

A spring biases the pin punch towards the driving blade of the staple gun tacker with the bushing and pin being positioned such that the pin punch is impacted by the driving blade of the staple gun tacker when it is operated to apply a driving force thereto, which force is used to drive the pin member of the rivet to expand the free end of the rivet.

  • Patent number: 4558585
Abstract: This invention is a method for providing an impression profile in a reference standard material utilized in inspecting critically stressed components with pulsed ultrasound. A die stamp (10) having an I letter, reference numeral (36), is used to impress a reference material (50) having a surface (52). The die stamp is placed against the surface (52) and struck with an inertia imparting member to impress the I in the reference standard material. Upset (54) may appear on the surface (52) as a result of the impression and is removed to form a smooth surface (52). The stamping and upset removal is repeated until the entire surface area of a depth control platform (30) on the die stamp uniformly contacts the material surface (52). The I impression profile in the reference standard material (50) is utilized for reflecting pulsed ultrasonic beams as a means for inspecting ultrasonically.

  • Patent number: 4531395
Abstract: Modular male and female drawbead structures comprise wafers of varying thickness which abut each other and are longitudinally wholly or partially aligned relative to each other in respective slots of die binders. The male structure has a body portion including a base wall and side walls which match and are spaced from like walls of a respective slot. A bead portion projects from an outer wall of the body portion and is joined thereby across concave shoulders. The female structure has a body portion including a base wall seating on the matching base wall of a respective slot and side walls which match and are spaced from like walls of a respective slot. A groove portion in the outer wall of the female module interfits with the bead portion and is joined to such outer wall by convex shoulders which match the concave shoulders.

  • Patent number: 4493201
Abstract: A strong, seamless one-piece metal bottle of substantially uniform wall thickness for containing and dispensing gas under pressure is produced from a flat metal piece by a series of deep-drawing operations to provide an elongated cylindrical shell having an open end mouth and a slight flange thereabout. A dimple is formed in its bottom end wall. The flange and an adjacent cylindrical open end mouth portion of the shell is then severed from the main body, and the wall thickness of the new open end mouth portion is tapered from the cylindrical side wall of the shell towards its mouth edge. Thereafter, the tapered open mouth end portion is turned or swaged inwardly into a somewhat blunt, rounded-in nose portion of a substantially uniform thickness that substantially corresponds in the thickness to the side and bottom walls of the formed metal bottle and that has an open end of reduced size suitable for mounting a nipple, ferrule or valve fitting therein.

  • Patent number: 4314472
Abstract: A method for producing a magnetic rotatable member as a part of a pulley in an electromagnetic clutch is proposed. In order to reduce the producing time and the wasted material amount, the rotatable member is formed by press-drawing a magnetic circular plate to form an annular body consisted of an outer annular cylindrical portion, an inner annular cylindrical portion and an axial end annular plate portion connecting therebetween. Thereafter, the blank is subjected to ironing to form a radial annular rim on the outer surface of the outer annular cylindrical portion at the axial end, and also subjected to cutting-away and bending processes to cut away the outer edge of the inner annular cylindrical portion and to bend the resultant annular thin wall portion radially inwardly so that a radial flange is formed.
