Patent number: 6477879Abstract: In a prior art roller type processing apparatus for processing a workpiece by roll pressing a roller, the roller is roll-pressed at the same location a number of times. Thus, longer processing time is required compared to processing using pressing dies. It is, accordingly, an object of the present invention to reduce the processing time by providing a roller type processing apparatus. Therefore, in the present invention, rollers 13, 14 are attached to a plurality of independently controllable robot arms 11, 12, respectively, and the rollers 13, 14 are successively roll-pressed along a portion to be processed We of a workpiece W in different rolling positions.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2000Date of Patent: November 12, 2002Assignee: Tri Engineering Company LimitedInventor: Masazumi Sawa

Patent number: 5666849Abstract: Sliced workpieces severed from a metal extrusion transversely of it and into a desired thickness, or bent ones made from the extruded metal pipes, are restrained at their regulated correct positions each in its entirety or in part. Subsequently, the workpieces are compressed in a direction to the thickness or in the direction perpendicular to the primary bending direction. Plastic deformation of or exceeding 0.5%, or more preferably 2-5%, will be produced in each workpiece. Alternatively, those sliced or bent workpieces may be pressed in a direction to that of thickness or in the direction perpendicular to a previous bending, after each workpiece is restrained in its entirety or in part at the regulated correct dimension.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: September 16, 1997Assignees: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, Showa Aluminum CorporationInventors: Yasushi Nakazawa, Masayoshi Ohashi, Yasushi Tashiro, Tadashi Yasuoka, Akio Sugiura

Patent number: 5303573Abstract: Aluminum automobile wheels are straightened by exerting gentle pressure on the wheel to urge the wheel back to its original shape. If the metal does not move under pressure, the wheel is heated, and pressure again exerted, the process continuing until the wheel becomes round. A C-shaped wheel mount carries a spindle which mounts a hub. The hub rigidly receives the wheel, and the hub is selectively rotatable, and the wheel mount is selectively rotatable about a horizontal axis. The wheel is gently brought back to shape without excess heat or excess working to damage the metal. A final metal spinning step relieves stresses in the metal and brings the wheel to final tolerances.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1992Date of Patent: April 19, 1994Assignee: Wheel Wizard International, Inc.Inventor: Thomas E. Patent number: 4949565Abstract: A straightening method particularly for an elongated metal member having a long longitudinally linear length, is carried out by an automatic straightening apparatus by the manner of preliminarily setting a plurality of points at which distortion are to be straightened. When it is required to straighten an amount of distortion to be straightened at a certain point, the amount is adjusted in consideration of the amounts of strains to be straightened at the other points by utilizing the method of least squares so that the elongated metal member has substantially a linearly straight shape. According to this manner, the amounts of the respective points of the long member to be straightened are adjusted. The distortion of the elongated metal member can thus be substantially straightened to a highly improved accuracy.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1989Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventors: Nobukazu Kodera, Takeo Kakuti

Patent number: 4637961Abstract: The disclosure relates to a novel shell such as used in the manufacture of can ends, and to a method and tools for making such a shell. A non-circular blank having rounded corners is cut from thin metal. The blank is oblong in a direction transverse to the grain of the metal. A first set of tools separates the blanks and forms a substantially flat central panel and an upward-extending chuck wall about the edge of the panel to produce a partially formed shell. The junction area between said panel and said chuck wall has a relatively large radius of curvature at this time. A second set of tools forms in the blank a lip extending outward from the upper end of the chuck wall and generally parallel to said panel; then the panel and the chuck wall are separately gripped, followed by relative movement between the panel and the chuck wall while wrapping the junction area around a forming punch to form a panel wall in said junction area extending upward from the inner part of said chuck wall.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1985Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: Dayton Reliable Tool & Mfg. Patent number: 4485662Abstract: A tool is disclosed for adjusting the suspension struts in vehicles, in order to correct wheel camber. A web is bolted to the lug bolts corresponding to the strut being adjusted. A first hydraulically actuated ram is connected to the web and to a portion of the strut, while a second such ram, which pushes in a direction opposite to the first, is connected to a chain which is in turn connected to another portion of the strut. The operator applies hydraulic pressure to the rams, which push and pull on the strut until a predetermined deflection is achieved. Because the rams act on the web in directions opposite to each other, and in approximately the same plane, the forces acting on the web are substantially cancelled, and little force is thereby placed on the lug bolts of the vehicle, which might otherwise deform or destroy the wheel bearings.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1982Date of Patent: December 4, 1984Inventor: Voyd H. Patent number: 4464920Abstract: Disclosed is a roller forming machine for converting a flat metal strip into a louver having long, narrow fins that extend lengthwise of the strip and are all bent laterally in one direction oblique to the plane of the strip. The fins are produced by a pair of fin forming rollers which slit the strip and bend out the fins to a larger acute angle to the plane of the strip than is desired in the finished louver. The strip then tends to twist along its length due to asymmetrical residual stresses generated by fin formation. To remove the twist, the strip is passed between cylindrical straightening rollers whereby the fins are bent partway back towards coplanarity with the strip, thus generating new residual stresses which oppose the original ones due to fin forming. One straightening roller is adjustable towards and from the other so that said new residual stresses can be empirically brought into equilibrium with the original ones.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1982Date of Patent: August 14, 1984Assignee: Artos Engineering CompanyInventors: Herbert M.
