Vehicle Body Or Frame Straightener Patents (Class 72/705)
  • Patent number: 5771739
Abstract: An automatic chain lock allows successive pulls on a vehicle on a straightening apparatus without manipulation of the chain lock between actuations of the fluid cylinder. A pair of gates provides a ratchet arrangement for the chain, the lower gate holding the chain while the lower gate is moved down to pull the chain and cause the chain to ratchet through the upper gate; and, when the movement reaches its end, the upper gate secures the chain while the chain ratchets through the lower gate. The procedure is then repeated, the lower gate again moving down to make another pull on the vehicle. Each gate has a pair of flanges that pivot down, but are held against pivoting up. The two gates are arranged with respect to each other so that each will engage a link of the chain at the appropriate time in the cycle.

  • Patent number: 5752408
Abstract: Support structure for carrying a vehicle body comprises a pair of spaced apart frames positioned about a front and rear end of the vehicle body. Each frame has an octagon shape formed by joined elongated members. A cross bar assembly of each frame includes a pair of sleeve supports positioned on side members of the frame body and a center member pivotally carried by the sleeve supports. Latching mechanisms at ends of the cross bar assembly limit the degree of center member rotation with respect to the frame body. During use the frames are positioned horizontally so that bottom sections may be slid under respective slightly raised ends of the vehicle body. Mounts on each cross bar assembly then are attached to mounting structure of the vehicle. Next, a top member of one frame is lifted upward which rotates the frame body and lifts that end of the vehicle body. When vertical, its latching mechanisms activate to inhibit further frame movement. Bracing carried by the frame then is attached to the vehicle body.

Abstract: A sheet metal working tool particularly adapted for vehicle body repair comprising a slide hammer assembly attached to a suction cup from which air is drawn through the assembly. The tool incorporates a compressed air-operated vacuum ejector functioning on the venturi principle into a stop on the end of the slide hammer assembly opposite the suction cup. The exhaust stream is effectively muffled and diffused through a collar of hard, rugged, porous material that fits within a channel in the surface of the vacuum ejector/stop and that completely covers the port through which the exhaust exists the vacuum ejector/stop. The suction cup is reinforced by an internally located stiffener, and shock loads that may damage the threaded connections among components of the tool are damped by a shock absorbing hose connected to the vacuum ejector/stop.

  • Patent number: 5697478
Abstract: The sacrificial tube shock attenuation device services as a deformable energy absorbing system designed to be employed between a bumper receiving a potentially destructive force and a payload which is to be protected from the force. The device is composed of a tube assembly running through and aligning apertures of a maul, or series of mauls, which is (are) attached to the bumper and the apertures of a pair of stators, or multiple pairs of stators, that each maul is situated between. The stators are attached to the payload. When overloaded the maul(s) moves relative to the stators causing a misalignment of their respective apertures resulting in deformation of the tube assembly. A simple tube assembly may be comprised of a single tube. A more complex tube assembly may be comprised of multiple tubes within tubes depending on the anticipated overload. In a multi-tube assembly the inner tubes receive the load consecutively as the misalignment of the apertures of the maul and stators progresses.

  • Patent number: 5516997
Abstract: A battery powered dent puller for re-contouring sheet metal having a dent is disclosed. A direct current welding electrode mounted on a handle allows the user to attach the electrode to an indentation in sheet metal with a very brief surge of 12 volt direct current. The welding current is regulated by means of a switch mounted on the handle which controls a relay through which the current travels. Once the electrode is attached on the sheet metal, the user may pull with considerable force in a direction that is generally in-line with the electrode. The force of the user pulling on the sheet metal tends to alter the contour of the metal, thus pulling out the indentation. To disengage the electrode from the sheet metal, the user twists the electrode, which breaks the weld. The battery power supply allows portability, increases safety, and tends to reduce assembly costs.

A second cylinder (28) may be provided to closely encompass the first cylinder (22), the second cylinder (28) selectively pivoting about the first cylinder (22). A mounting plate (40) is carried by the first or second cylinder (22,28) for mounting a piston member (44) thereon. The piston member (44) may be any conventional piston (44) such as an air cylinder. A two-way valve (100) is in fluid communication with the piston member (44) at each end and with a fluid source to control the direction and distance of travel. A fender hammer (88) is secured to the piston shaft ( 74) and is comprised of a mounting block (90) and an engagement member (94).

  • Patent number: 5398535
Abstract: A lockable spreader clamp comprises first and second handle portions for gripping by an operator and first and second arm portions extending therefrom. Outer portions of the arm portions have contact pads thereon for engaging a work piece. Inner portions of the arm portions are hinged together and cooperate with the handle portions so as to be responsive to movement thereof, so that movement of the handle portions towards each other causes the outer arm portions to move away from each other. The arm portions are locked to engage the work piece when the handle portions are moved towards each other to activate a locking structure, and can be released from a locked position by activating a releasing structure. The invention can be positioned in a narrow space between two members of a work piece using one hand, and can be locked in position so as to be self-supporting and leave the operator's hands free. When so locked, the clamp can provide an anvil for hammering against.
