Abstract: A television system for providing standard television programming and Internet browsing includes a television set for viewing digital and/or analog programming and includes a memory storage device and an integral embedded web browser for displaying data received from an Internet portal. The data is in the form of URLs and web pages that are synchronized with selected TV programming and/or advertising. A remote control selectively displays URLs and/or their associated web pages stored in memory by the Internet portal. In one aspect of the invention, TV programming can be displayed simultaneously on the screen with related web pages and URLs.

Abstract: Techniques for Internet Protocol (IP) video integration within a home viewing network are provided. Locally acquired IP video content is assigned a channel on a television (TV). The assigned channel is associated with a same source input of the TV that includes other channels that present externally acquired TV programming content. The TV programming content and the local IP video content can both be accessed on a TV over the same source input via references to appropriately assigned channels.

Abstract: A real-time program transmission system and method may receive a signal from a content source, and generate two different data streams. One stream may be of a higher quality than the other. The two streams may then be inserted into time slice frames, such that a single frame carries two portions of data: one corresponding to a first time segment in the program, and a second corresponding to a different time segment in the program. A receiving mobile terminal may buffer the received data, and may use the lower quality data as a backup in the event of a transmission error in the higher quality data.

Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a system and method of sharing private content. In a particular embodiment, the method includes receiving a designation of a share location from which private content of a first user of an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) system can be obtained. The method also includes receiving identifications of a plurality of other users of the IPTV system. The method also includes notifying a video server to include an indicator of the private content with video content sent to a plurality of set-top box devices, where each of the plurality of other users is associated with one of the plurality of set-top box devices.

Abstract: According to one example embodiment there is provided a computer program executable on a computing platform to at least in part analyze data at least in part obtained from one or more data sources of an Internet-protocol television (IPTV) network, wherein the data provided by the data sources includes set-top-box data, subscriber data, demographic data, content server data and network usage data. In another embodiment, the computer program at least in part correlates video provisioning information obtained from the data sources, individual subscriber channel viewing information, subscriber data and demographic data to provide informative views of data. The provisioning information may include information such as what programs or television (TV) commercials are shown on each channel during different time periods and the TV or video-on-demand program category information.

Abstract: A system and method are described for allowing cable operators to actively block, pass through, modify, append, filter, or replace triggers corresponding to various forms of enhanced content being transmitted across a cable system. Accordingly, cable operators may offer enhanced content customized for their subscribers and earn additional fees for local advertising and other closely allied services.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for providing enhanced advertising media are described herein. In particular, interactive music and music videos can be provided to a viewer of a television (TV) upon the request of the viewer. Additionally, the viewer can choose which music and/or music videos he/she would like to view at a particular time as well as order such music and/or music videos.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for providing a similar broadcasting service in a DVB-H system. The method includes: configuring and broadcasting Electric Service Guide (ESG) data including service linking information in which a DVB-H transmission server including data and access information about at least one linked service set in a certain DVB-H service; and receiving and storing the ESG data by a DVB-H reception terminal, detecting service linking information corresponding to a DVB-H service during reception from the ESG data if a reception intensity of signals is less than a preset reference value during reception of the DVB-H service, stopping reception of the DVB-H service being currently received, and receiving a linked service included in the service linking information with reference to the detected service linking information.

Abstract: Techniques for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) stream management within a home viewing network are provided. A plurality of IPTV streams are presented on viewing devices within the home viewing network. Descriptive information is presented with each of the presentations. The descriptive information includes at least a status for each of the IPTV streams and a location for each of the IPTV streams within the home viewing network. Moreover, the presentation permits selectable actions to be taken with respect to any of the IPTV streams within the home viewing network.

Abstract: A production facility receives program content from a plurality of broadcast feeds over the Internet. In an embodiment, the production facility comprises server on a computer network, such as the Internet. The server comprises computer programs configured to manipulate the audio and video data of the multiple program contents. At the production facility, the program content can be manipulated to produce a production. Program manipulation can comprise at least one of green screen technology, music, graphics, Foley, sound effects, voice over, advertising, or the like. The production is broadcast over the computer network to viewers, where the viewers receive the production. In an embodiment, the production is customized based on the viewers' input received while broadcasting. In other words, the production is customized in real time based at least in part on the interaction of the production with the viewers.

Abstract: A system for broadcasting enhanced television content may provide for early notification of web hosting facilities when uniform resource locators may be broadcast with television content. When uniform resource locators are broadcast with television content, a large number of users may attempt to simultaneously access the hosting web site for the uniform resource locator. By providing early warning through the television broadcast system, the web servers which handle the load of attempted web accesses may gear up for the load spike. Through an automatic system, a relatively failsafe procedure may be implemented to ensure that the web hosting facilities receive notice sufficient to enable them to prepare for the onslaught of attempted accesses.

Abstract: A method and system for use in providing content to a viewer that includes providing a service comprising an on demand video service to the viewer wherein the viewer has an option to view video content. The system is configured to compensate the viewer a reward for having viewed the video content, and the system maintains an accounting of the reward and corresponding viewer identification.

Abstract: A data transmission system and method for DVB-H signals for enhancing data robustness of a DVB-H receiver in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels includes transmitting IP datagrams from a DVB-H transmitter to the DVB-H receiver; applying a MPE section and a FEC section to the transmitted IP datagrams; mapping the transmitted IP datagrams to TS packets; aligning boundaries of the transmitted IP datagrams to a given number of TS packets; fixing a size of the IP datagrams to a known value at the DVB-H receiver; and extracting the IP datagrams from the DVB-H receiver.

Abstract: A method for interactive Internet protocol television in which program channels and an announcement channel are received over the IP medium. Triggers contained in the announcement channel can be used to alter a viewer's viewing experience. The bandwidth required for the announcement channel is not fixed, rather it is a function of the triggers contained therein. The program channels and the announcement channel can be provided by independent sources. The method can provide for efficient use of the bandwidth in the IP medium and can provide greater flexibility to the viewer with regard to the source of program and announcement channels.

Abstract: A system for deriving benefits from the reception and processing of composite video signals by a hand-held device, such as a smart card. Video signals are modulated with auxiliary data creating composite video signals. The composite video signals are then transmitted to and received by a hand-held device. The auxiliary data is then detected in the modulated video signal by circuitry of the hand-held device. The user receives benefits resulting from the reception of the auxiliary data.

Abstract: An IP-based television interactive broadcast system that includes: a first subsystem, the first subsystem receiving and storing raw content arriving from a content generation source; a second subsystem, the second subsystem processing the received content by performing at least one of encoding, editing, inserting interactive modules into the content, or inserting special affects and graphics in the received content, and a third subsystem, the third subsystem having the capability to stack multiple streaming files into a playlist, store all of the processed content from the second subsystem, broadcast, control access, and manage the delivery of streams/channels to worldwide audiences. The IP-based television interactive broadcast system capable of delivering an unlimited number of channels containing multiple content, where the channels are interactive 2-way streams contained within a single IP Internet session.

Abstract: Techniques for recommending recording and/or downloading suggestions to a DVR user are provided. According to one technique, a list of suggestions is received from a recommending entity. Each of the suggestions identifies either to-be-broadcasted content or downloadable content. The entity is mapped to the list, thereby establishing an entity-to-list mapping. Data, which indicates a user's selection of a list, is received. The user's DVR is mapped to the selected list, thereby establishing a DVR-to-list mapping. Based on this mapping, one or more candidate items are automatically selected from among a set of items. Identities of the candidate items are sent to the DVR. The recommending entity does not own or operate the DVR.

Abstract: A content processing method and apparatus which can maximize user convenience by allocating content available in a home network to an empty TV channel are provided. The content processing method includes storing channel information regarding a plurality of broadcast channels to which a broadcast signal has been set, storing channel information regarding a plurality of empty channels to which no broadcast signal has been set, issuing a request for a content list to and receiving a content list from one of a plurality of server devices connected to a home network, mapping the content list to a plurality of empty channels, and selecting one of the channels to which the content list is mapped, and playing back content included in the selected channel.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a set top box for playing Web TV. The set top box includes a control unit, a network transmission interface, a data transmission interface, and a first interface. The set top box can be connected to a multimedia player through the first interface, such that a multimedia processing unit of the multimedia player can control the control unit and the multimedia processing unit to decode audio/video signals transmitted from the network transmission interface and the data transmitter, and output images and sounds. Therefore, through the multimedia processing unit of the multimedia player, the set top box is able to play Web TV. The invention also discloses a multimedia player, a system capable of playing Web TV, and a method of integrating the set top box and multimedia player for playing Web TV.

Sweepstake rules are selectable to encourage viewer interaction and engagement with the presentation. Dynamic incentive drivers are applied in real time to further enhance viewer participation and excitement. Broadcast sponsor shares in the revenue generated by the service provider providing the communication services by which the viewers' responses are made in response to the queries.

Abstract: An interface device to a broadcast medium uses the Internet Protocol communication layer to communicate with other devices on a network. The device may be associated with a single controlling device on the network, through which other devices on the same network may query and schedule the interface device. The interface device may accept several sources of broadcast or other media, including video and audio, and prepare and normalize the content for used by other devices. Several different physical interfaces may be used to subsequently convert the Internet Protocol communications into useful content streams for various devices, including storage and rendering devices.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, computer medium, and other embodiments for synchronizing control of one or more devices at predetermined times are described. A host scheduler loads a to-do list of predetermined events and corresponding time-tags into memory and broadcasts scheduled events to the devices to cause activation of the events on intended devices.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system for generating a graphics window that is capable of emulating enhanced video from a combined video and interactive content stream. The set-top emulator can randomly access the combined video and interactive content stream to provide an easy manner of randomly accessing portions of the combined video and interactive stream for quality control purposes. Random access allows selective viewing of the enhanced video which saves time. Additionally, the combined video and interactive content stream can be simultaneously viewed as it is being produced to allow immediate feedback to an interactive television producer.

Abstract: An improved short life coupon system which allows a television viewer to select discount or promotional coupons while viewing a television commercial. Coupon information relating to the commercial is sent to a central station which also contains up-to-date point-of-sale information. This information is analyzed by the central station so that the coupon can be specifically designed to satisfy the viewer and maximize sales.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses in which two or more types of attributes from an information stream are identified. Each of the identified attributes from the information stream is encoded. A time ordered indication is assigned with each of the identified attributes. Each of the identified attributes shares a common time reference measurement. Abstract: A master movie and player are created on the fly. The master movie is created based on characteristics of a movie or other asset to be viewed by the player. The player is constructed from a template having rudimentary player capabilities for a predetermined connection speed. Tracks selected by suppliers and user/e-tailers are added to customize the player. Different players are constructed for various predetermined connection speeds. When an asset is to be viewed, a server downloads the master movie matching a content viewer's request to the content viewer's machine. The master movie determines the connection speed and send a message back to the server. The server then downloads the player for the asset requested by the content viewer and matching the content viewer's connection speed. The requested asset is then streamed to the content viewer.

Abstract: A system and method for distributing music and data. The music or data is first transmitted to a consumer via a satellite radio network. The system includes a satellite radio receiver for the user which is capable of receiving the wireless transmission and providing an audio and/or visual output in response thereto. In addition, the receiver is adapted to receive an input (e.g., voice command) from the user by which the user is able to signal an interest in recording a selection of music or data being played and/or displayed. In response to this signal and a record-ability signal, an ID signal is stored on a removable media which identifies the selection being played and/or displayed. The ID signal may be a composite signal indicating the time and channel, a signal that identifies a selection by number, or other suitable ID signal.

Abstract: A system and method for simultaneously accessing video data and Internet page data includes a format manager that inserts a video tag into page data to concurrently display a positionable video window and the page data upon the screen of a display device. The format manager reformats the displayed page data to avoid the video window when shown on the display device. The format manager also maintains the video window in a stationary position when a system user scrolls the page data in relation to the video window.

Abstract: Hypervideo data is encoded with two distinct portions, a first portion which contains the video data and a second portion, typically much smaller than the first, which contains hyperlink information associated with the video data. Preferably, the first and second portions are stored in separate and distinct files. The encoding of the hyperlink information is preferably made efficient by encoding only key frames of the video, and by encoding hot link regions of simple geometries. A hypervideo player determines the hot link regions in frames between key frames by interpolating the hot link regions in key frames which sandwich those frames.

Responsive to determining the hot key signal is relevant to the user, an indication that the hot key signal has been received is displayed on the screen. Responsive to receiving an indication that the hot key is accepted, a determination is made regarding a location on a screen for the alternate content and the original content and the alternate content are displayed in a Picture-In-Picture mode.

Abstract: According to one aspect of the present invention, systems and methods are provided for informing a user of an interactive television service of available content from an Internet web site and redirecting the user to the Internet content responsive to selection of a hot key embedded in content signals. According to another aspect of the present invention, systems and methods are provided for caching alternate content on a user's terminal device and redirecting the user to the cached content responsive to selection of a hot key embedded in content signals.

Abstract: According to various aspects of the present invention, methods and systems are provided for informing users of an interactive television service of available content during an advertisement or via an electronic program guide. A hot key signal is inserted into a content signal transmitted to the one or more users from an interactive television service provider via a network with which the one or more users and the interactive television service provider are connected. If the hot key signal is relevant to the user, an indication that the hot key signal has been received is displayed on the screen. If the user accepts the hot key, the user is redirected to the alternate content or is provided additional information regarding the available content.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are described that provide enhanced network operator control. According to one aspect of the present invention, a method comprises determining at a head-end and data center whether to inform one or more users of an interactive television service of available content, the one or more users connected with head-end and data center via a network. Responsive to determining to inform the one or more users of the available content, generating a hot key signal indicating availability and a location of the alternate content. The hot key signal is inserted into a content signal transmitted to the one or more users from the head-end and data center via the network.

Abstract: Described are a method and apparatus for incorporating broadcast television into Web pages. Broadcast television can be embedded into Web pages using, for example, a “tv:” attribute in conjunction with common HTML tags. Within the “tv:” attribute, a Web-page author can reference a TV station by channel number, network, or broadcast call letters. HTML documents are parsed to recover both the conventional tags and tags that include TV attributes. The resulting Web pages display the identified broadcast TV in a frame specified by the TV attribute. One embodiment supports the presentation of television in the background of an HTML document. In that embodiment, HTML tags corresponding to overlying HTML content are provided with an attribute that defines a level of transparency from zero to one-hundred percent. The transparency attribute allows content providers to overlay any type of HTML information over a broadcast television show without completely obscuring the underlying show.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer readable code for extending payment protocols to include information related to the television context of commercial activity between a consumer using a television (or a set-top box) and a merchant, thereby enabling “TV commerce” to generate additional revenue streams which may include payments to the operator of the television system, as well as to various other parties (such as a cable or satellite provider who is providing the broadcast, the ad agency responsible for creating the advertisement from which the consumer made his purchase, etc.) involved with television advertisements and programs. A number of different payment protocols may be used for these TV commerce transactions, where the protocol messages are then augmented according to the present invention to include TV context data.

Abstract: An HTTP based video streaming apparatus and method of a mobile communication system is disclosed. A memory, such as a storing disk, stores content files received from a server of a transmitting party, a random access searching unit searches the random access point in the memory and transmits a content file request message to the transmitting server if the random access point does not exist in the memory, and a display unit displays the files from the random access point. Therefore, HTTP streaming service from a random point required by a user can be provided when the streaming has begun, and the random access function can be supported by even if the part required by the user has not yet been transmitted to receiving party.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system for displaying targeted information based upon preference and/or demographic data. In one embodiment, generalized triggers are sent to a set-top box which contains the preference and/or demographic data. Downloaded addresses of targeted information are selected based upon the trigger and the preference and/or demographic data. Targeted data is then downloaded from a selected site for display to a viewer. In another embodiment, the preference and/or demographic data is stored at an upstream source. In another embodiment, multiple triggers are transmitted to the set-top box which then selects an address of targeted information from the multiple triggers based upon the preference and/or demographic data.

Abstract: A video distribution method and a video distribution system connected to a transmission path such as the Internet. The system has a video signal input unit, an encoder for converting the video signal into a digitally compressed image data, an image accumulation and distribution unit for accumulating and distributing the digitally compressed image data, a notification unit for reading the accumulated images and detecting an image change, an image browsing data converter for reducing the accumulated image, and an information terminal for accessing the images of the image accumulation and distribution unit and the image browsing data converter. The notification unit, upon detection of an image change, records the image change occurrence time. The information terminal acquires the image from the image accumulation and distribution unit or the video browsing data converter based on the change occurrence time information stored in the notification unit.

The broadcast server may run a carousel manager, and the carousel manager may formulate a broadcast policy to be used in constructing the carousel. The interactive television receiver may run a interface module that can process resource requests from an application program. The interface module may obtain a requested resource from the broadcast path or from a point-to-point path.

Abstract: Cable modem circuitry is connected via a bus interface to decoder circuitry in a set top box to receive various types of content and distribute the content to outputs corresponding to the content type. The outputs include video, audio, data (USB host), telephony and asynchronous interface. The content is received on a single broadband connection from a single service provider rather than multiple connections from multiple service providers. The DOCSIS protocol, and features that are a part thereof, are used to facilitate efficient transmission of content to a subscriber.

Abstract: An emergency voice communication technique through the Internet using a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) Internet phone between a central control center and a digital video recorder or between remotely located digital video recorders. The operator of the digital video recorder immediately calls the Internet phone of a predetermined remote workstation only by lifting the handset of the Internet phone connected to the digital video recorder when an alarm event is generated in the digital video recorder. If an alarm event occurs in the remote workstation, the operator of the remote workstation immediately calls the Internet phone of the digital video recorder by lifting the handset of the Internet phone connected to the remote workstation. VoIP communication between remotely located digital video recorders can be carried out through a network or the Internet using Internet phones connected to the digital video recorders.

Abstract: An enhanced television recorder and player includes a trigger inserter unit that inserts triggers into vertical blanking intervals of audio/video signals. The triggers point to resources that are stored in a storage medium or are available from a network, where the triggers, audio/video signals, and resources together can comprise a Transport Type B transmission. The audio/video signals having triggers in the vertical blanking intervals are stored in the storage medium, and during playback by a stream simulator unit, simulate a Transport Type A transmission, transformed from the Transport Type B transmission. Requested resources may be retrieved from the storage medium or from the network by a proxy unit of the receiver unit.

The method includes inserting uniform resource identifier (URI) information into a DownloadServerInitiate (DSI) message that provides information regarding a module group, the module group having a predetermined number of modules and the URI information being shared by modules belonging to the module group, and inserting the remaining URI information, except for the shared URI information, into a DownloadInfoIndication (DII) message that provides the module information. Accordingly, it is possible to save space in a DII message and consequently insert more modules into the DII message.

Abstract: The invention concerns a protocol for broadcasting to a terminal (T) audio-visual materials (PG) from an audio-visual server, comprising a signalling source (SS) and an audio-visual source (SAV). The protocol consists, via an IP network, in acquiring (A) a descriptive file of the source (SS), in acquiring (B) from the source (SS) based on the file SDP, a broadcast signalling channel (SC), and in receiving (C) on said terminal from the signalling channel (SC) at least a digital data flow supporting the audio-visual materials (PG). The invention is useful for broadcasting audio-visual materials on INTERNET.
