Abstract: A CATV system has a multitude of customer interfaces which include an external unit and an internal unit. The units includes equipment for signal conditioning, cable to telephone interface, and/or cable to computer interface. The internal unit is provided with power by the customer, and the power is used to operate the equipment of the units. The customer supplied power is isolated from the power distributed in the cable television system. Preferably, the customer supplied power is conducted through the coaxial television cable between the internal unit and the external unit. The invention reduces power consumption and allows such customer interfaces to be easily added to existing and future cable systems without overwhelming the existing AC power distribution system of the cable television network.

  • Patent number: 6785908
Abstract: A power supply circuit in the tap device includes a first power supply circuit for generating a first power voltage of DC 24V to drive output switching relays, and a second power supply circuit for generating a second power voltage of DC 5V to be supplied to a receiving circuit and a microcomputer. The second power supply circuit lowers the voltage of the alternating-current power signal from the transmission line with a transformer, rectifies and smoothes the power signal with the lowered voltage, then generates the power voltage using a three-terminal regulator. The tap device can be used in CATV systems with different voltages of the alternating-current power signal employed, a power loss generated in the system with a high voltage is reduced, and the power consumption of the tap device can be suppressed.

  • Patent number: 6772437
Abstract: Cable modems are provided for measuring a noise signal power level on the upstream side of the cable network. The cable modem may be configured to make the signal power measurements at a variety of frequencies and at a selected bandwidth during a specified test time period responsive to a request received from the cable network. Methods and systems are provided for identifying a noise signal source on a cable network including specifying a time window for measurements, the desired measurements and the cable modems from which measurements are desired when the need to initiate a test to identify a noise source is detected. Tests may be initiated based on noise signal measurements by individual cable modems or by the cable services provider which indicate an unacceptable noise level. In addition, the reliability of the test measurements may be improved by not allowing any transmissions on the upstream side during the concurrent test window while cable modems are making the requested measurements.

Abstract: This invention enables setting an RF output channel to a desired channel with a simple operation. A number key on a remote controller is depressed for long time of three seconds or more as an operation other than an ordinary operation for the number key. If a control portion detects a setting signal generated by thus depressing the number key for the long time, the control portion determines whether a channel corresponding to the operated number key is vacant. If the channel is vacant, the control portion sets the channel as the RF output channel. If the channel corresponding to the depressed number key is not vacant, a vacant channel is searched. If there is a vacant channel, the vacant channel is set as the RF output channel.

Abstract: A method of converting application data to transport data in a power line communication system includes receiving application data from an application in a device through a service access point. The connection type and connection specification for the application data is then analyzed to determine if a connection exists for the application data. If a connection exists for the application data, mapping the application data is mapped into transport data.

  • Patent number: 6694516
Abstract: The method is used in a telecommunication network wherein a central station (CS) is coupled to a plurality of residences (R1,R2,R3). One of the residences (R3) includes a termination unit (TU) which is coupled to the central station (CS) via a first port (P1). The residence (R3) also includes subscriber terminals, e.g. a personal computer (PC), a telephone set (TEL), a television set (TV) and a set-top box (STB) which are coupled to the termination unit (TU) via a second port (P2). The method includes amplifying an upstream signal (US) applied to the second port (P2) with an upstream gain value (UG) by means of an upstream signal amplifier (U-AMP3) which is included in the termination unit (TU). Thereby, an amplified upstream signal (AUS) is generated and provided to the first port (P1).

  • Patent number: 6694517
Abstract: A broadband telecommunication network (such as a cable television distribution system) includes a plurality of switching units (such as taps) controlling subscriber access to the network. The switching units are controlled from a central location (such as a head end) using minimal network transmission medium power. A repeating sequence of switching unit control messages is sent from the central location across the network. Each of the messages is addressed to an individual one of the switching units. Each switching unit is periodically powered up from a low power sleep state to a higher power operational wake state in synchronization with a corresponding one of the control messages being sent from the central location. After a switching unit's corresponding control message is processed, the switching unit is returned to the lower power sleep state.

Abstract: The system integrates a CCTV system including one or more video source units into the structured cabling system (“SCS”) of a building or the like by combining video signals, control signals and power for each video source unit over a single multipair cable made up of plural unshielded twisted pairs (“UTP”) of insulated copper conductors, so that one twisted pair of the cable carries the video signals, one pair carries the control signals and one or two pairs carry the power. The system includes combiners and distributors which can interface with the SCS cable through standard modular, multi-pin plug and jack connectors.

Abstract: A terminal is coupled to a video distribution network headend, and transmits upstream packets to the headend. Each upstream packet has a transmission power. The terminal receives a downstream packet from the headend, indicating a change in power. The terminal calculates an adjusted transmission power, based on the change in power specified in the downstream packet, and sets the transmission power of the upstream packets to the adjusted transmission power. The headend can be coupled to one or more terminals. The headend receives upstream packets from the terminal. The headend senses a received transmission power of each packet, and calculates a weighted average transmission power based on the received transmission powers. The headend calculates a change in transmission power based on the weighted average and a predetermined set point. The headend transmits a downstream packet to the terminal, indicating the change in power.

Abstract: The present invention is an upstream power control system, within a cable modem which controls the power consumption of the cable modem. The power control system comprises a MAC chip which synchronizes upstream communication signals for transmission to a cable network and outputs an upstream control signal, an upstream amplifier which receives the synchronized upstream communication signals, and a complex programmable logic device (CPLD). The CPLD controls the upstream amplifier in response to the upstream control signal such that the upstream amplifier is powered on during transmission of the communication signals, and powered off when not transmitting, which results in the reduction of power consumed by the cable modem.
