Abstract: Assets of broadcast network content are targeted to network users of interest based on location information regarding user equipment devices. Asset providers can specify location targeting criteria via a graphical user interface displaying mapping information. This location targeting criteria can then be compared to location information regarding user equipment devices so that assets are delivered to appropriate devices. The comparison of the location targeting criteria to the device location information can be performed at the user equipment devices or at another location. In the latter case the assets can be addressed to appropriate user equipment devices or appropriate user equipment devices can be directed to select the asset, which is broadcast via the network. In this manner, assets can be targeted to individual network users on a basis independent of network topology.

  • Patent number: 7490345
Abstract: One or more upstream line cards each include a digital or analog multiplexer front end circuit for a Cable Modem Termination System. Each upstream line card has only upstream receivers and allows a CMTS to share one or more receiver chips to receive and recover data from a larger number of input cables coupled to the front end multiplexer. A control circuit for the multiplexer uses MAP data and burst assignment data and upstream mini-slot counts for each of the input cables to determine when a burst is about to arrive on a cable and cause appropriate switching by the multiplexer or crossbar switch. In some embodiments, there is only one RF channel circuit coupled to the output of the multiplexer, so the multiplexer is controlled to couple the input cable upon which the burst is expected to the single RF channel.

  • Patent number: 7237250
Abstract: Idle Video-On-Demand (VOD) channel capacity is used to deliver promotional content to selected set-top boxes (STBs) in a cable television network. Commercial segment cues are used to instruct a set-top box to switch away from a broadcast program to the VOD channel during a commercial segment, and then switch back again to the original broadcast program at the end of the segment. More particularly, a promotion server determines an asset to be distributed such as a targeted promotion item (e.g., a commercial), and a list of STBs that are to receive it. The promotion server causes the video promotion content to be stored in VOD servers located at the head ends. A scheduler process then delivers schedule messages to head end message servers which identify each promotion asset, and an STB which is to receive it. The head end message server notifies its associated VOD server which then cues the asset by loading the asset, starting the asset, but pausing it.

The Enhanced Services Server interacts with the host using the host files. The host files may be downloaded from the host manufacturer into a database that distributes the modules as required to the various enhanced services systems. The host may be purchased by the cable subscriber and provisioning may be initiated by the retailer at the time of purchase using a provisioning network interacting with the appropriate cable system serving the subscriber. This abstract is not intended to limit or construe the scope of the claims.

  • Patent number: 7177520
Abstract: A method, apparatus and article of manufacture is provided for processing a previously encoded MPEG video high-resolution (HR) file and corresponding proxy file, for frame accurate timecode repair and synchronization of individual video frames of the HR and proxy files. Each video frame header of the HR and proxy files is modified by a compressed timecode packet having an identifying signature, an absolute timecode of the frame, and a relative timecode of the frame. The timecodes have the SMPTE timecode format HH:MM:SS:FF. The method automatically verifies the timecodes in the HR and proxy files timecode packets. If a repair of the HR file anomalous absolute timecodes is needed, the method automatically corrects the anomalous absolute timecodes in the HR file. If the proxy file starting video frame is offset from the HR file starting video frame, the method automatically synchronizes the proxy and the HR files absolute and relative timecodes.

  • Patent number: 7150017
Abstract: The present invention is a computer system for delivering digital information over a network. A request receiving process receives a request for transmitting digital information after a start time and before an end time. The digital information has a number of packets. A transmit time process determines the time required to transmit the digital information based on the number of packets and a network speed. A scheduler schedules a transmit time for the digital information and an acceptance process accepts the digital information for transmission only if the time required to transmit is less than or equal to the difference between the transmit time and the end time.

  • Patent number: 7065097
Abstract: A data reading control unit select packets to be transmitted so that the number of packets that are transmitted per unit time does not exceed the number of packets that can be transmitted per unit time. The data reading control unit performs this packet selection according to the transmission amount per unit time calculated by a transmission amount calculation unit, the priority information in a priority storing unit, and the transmission queue information in a transmission queue information storing unit. The data reading control unit 109 reads pointers to the selected packets from a cycle transmission queue buffer, reads TS packets from a TS packet buffer according to the read pointers, and outputs the read TS packets to a transmission unit.

Abstract: A system enables connection information and content description information to be separately transmitted from a broadcaster to a receiver. Thus, the description of the content may be provided to a receiver prior to the time that the information needed to specify the connection to the service such as a channel is known. By uncoupling the content description and connection information, the assignment of connection information may be managed dynamically in the broadcast network.

  • Patent number: 7032235
Abstract: A central controller remotely controls and configures sets of receivers to receive programs in a broadcast signal and recast selected sets of programs to selected sets of media devices over a computer network. Each receiver has an input module that receives programs from the broadcast signal, a control module that receives a control stream from the central controller, and a recasting module that reformats and transmits selects programs over the computer network. The receivers use the control stream to configure the selected sets of programs and the selected sets of media devices. The recasting module is uncoupled from the control module so that the receiver's recasting of selected program content can be different for different sets of receivers, thereby allowing any combination of broadcast programs to be recast by any set of receivers to any set of media devices. The receiver also has a storage module and interrupts the live recasting of the broadcast signal to spool out a locally stored file.

  • Patent number: 7020888
Abstract: Disclosed is a system that permits a variable number of disparate streams of data to be packaged together as content into a single distinct program referred to as an omnimedia package. A framework definition may be specified and created for the omnimedia package to allow a client set top box to decode the information and provide access to streams comprising video, audio and metadata information. The framework definition may be employed by a broadcast system to create a broadcast stream. A mechanism is described that permits a content provider to define a framework for delivering a package of related content. The framework definition encapsulates information necessary to build, format, transmit and display the disparate content streams. Data may be downloaded to a receiver prior to the broadcast of an associated program. The present invention may be implemented on terrestrial, cable, satellite, VDSL and other transport systems, including those that support upstream communication.

Abstract: Different programs are broadcasted in a plurality of channels. A broadcast program which transmits same data in repetition is reserved in such programs to download the data. The GUI part 250 displays EPG data indicating a broadcast time zone of a data broadcast program and the like. When a user select and reserves a program, the virtual program processing part 224 groups the selected program into a virtual program in which priorities interfere each other. The priority processing part 222 assigns a unique priority to each reserved program for each virtual program depending on user's operation. The reception control part 230 controls a broadcast receiving apparatus (not shown) to download data of a program which is assigned the highest priority at each time.
