Abstract: A system and method for facilitating user communication from a location. The system comprises two or more cameras for capturing two or more videos at a first location, a control unit for streaming one or more of the videos captured to a first communication unit at the first location through a first network, and streaming one or more of the videos captured to a second communication unit located at a second location through a second network, a server for identifying a location data of the first location based on an identifier of the control unit, and a communication platform associated with the first location. The communication platform is accessible by the first and second communication units through the first and second networks respectively.

Abstract: There is disclosed a method for replicating media contents in a P2P VoD system comprising a plurality of peers. The method may comprise: determining that a candidate media unit shall be replicated into a local storage of one of the peers; checking whether said local storage has enough space to store the candidate media unit; if not, selecting one media unit previously stored in said local storage to be replaced; and replacing the selected media unit by the candidate media unit.

Abstract: A system may receive, from a set top box (STB), a request for a video asset; retrieve a profile, associated with a user of the STB, that identifies a device, associated with the user, that is a different type of device than the STB; determine whether a transaction history associated with the STB or another transaction history, associated with the device, indicates that the video asset is authorized to be transmitted to the STB; transmit the video asset to the STB based on a determination that the transaction history or the other transaction history indicates that the video asset is authorized to be transmitted to the STB; perform a transaction on the video asset based on a determination that the first transaction history or the second transaction history does not indicate that the video asset is authorized be transmitted to the STB, and transmit the video asset to the STB as a result of the transaction.

With at least one implementation described herein, a viewer is able to resume watching such content at a new location (or “locus”) from the point that she bookmarked the content at an original location. The method comprises: setting the state of a buffer to be ACTIVE when a file section stored in the buffer is requested by any users; setting the state of the buffer to be INACTIVE when users no longer request the file section stored in the buffer, the buffer in INACTIVE state having a lifetime; changing the state of the buffer from INACTIVE to FREE when the lifetime decreases to zero.

Abstract: An information storage apparatus for processing a plurality of broadcast contents, where each content is subject to a respective use condition, includes a storage unit for storing such contents, a control unit configured to manage a respective recording reservation of each content and to control the storage unit so as to store a reservation target content in the storage unit and delete a stored content from the storage unit, the reservation target content and the stored content being respective members of the plurality of broadcast contents, and a determination unit configured to determine, when an instruction to perform a recording reservation of the reservation target content is received, whether there is any content stored in the storage unit that, according to its use condition, is permitted to be deleted from the storage unit by a recording start time of the reservation target content.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for storing a broadcast program are provided. The apparatus includes: a signal processing unit which generates an audio/video (A/V) file, an application file, and a first electronic program guide (EPG) file by appropriately processing a plurality of A/V signals, application information, and EPG information, respectively, which are included in an input broadcast program transport stream; a synchronization unit which receives the A/V file, the application file, and the first EPG file from the signal processing unit, generates storage information for the A/V file and storage information for the application file, and converts the first EPG file into a second EPG file comprising the storage information for the A/V file and the storage information for the application file; and a storage unit which stores the A/V file, the application file, and the second EPG file.

Abstract: Systems and methods of deferred multimedia content delivery are disclosed. In an embodiment, a method is disclosed that includes receiving a request from a first customer premises equipment (CPE) device to receive multimedia content. The method also includes selectively recording the multimedia content at a server based on a comparison of a measured bandwidth associated with the first CPE device and a bandwidth threshold. The method may also include delivering the multimedia content to the first CPE device from a network when measured bandwidth is available.

Abstract: A system for displaying electronic program guide information about a plurality of video items on a screen, the system including a display module to display a plurality of pages layering into the screen, each of the pages including a plurality of graphical panels associated with the video items, and a user input module to receive a user input to turn at least one of the pages such that the at least one page is peeled away from other ones of the pages in order to bring the graphical panels of the at least one page in or out of view, wherein the display module is operative to show the turning of the at least one page bringing the at least one page in or out of view. Related apparatus and methods are also described.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for dynamically adjusting advertisement (“ad”) time for a multicast channel. In one embodiment, a variable ad insertion function operates to receive one or more multicasts of media content from a core distribution network, insert ad timeslots into the media content, and optionally perform late-binding of ads to the ad timeslots. The media content including the inserted ad timeslots and late-binded ads, if any, is then multicast to associated client devices over a feeder network using corresponding multicast channels. For each multicast channel, insertion of ad timeslots into the associated media content is dynamically controlled based on the number of users currently consuming or predicted to consume the multicast channel, the number of client devices receiving or predicted to receive the multicast channel, or both.

Abstract: The present invention relates to systems, methods, and user interfaces for browsing a collection of content items saved by a user or by one or more buddies associated with a given user. The method of the present invention comprises saving one or more content items and one or more associated keywords as specified by a user. An interface is generated that displays the one or more saved content items and the one or more associated keywords, as well as the one or more buddies associated with a given user. A user indication of the selection of a given keyword or the selection of a given buddy by the user is received. The one or more displayed content items are filtered according to the selected keyword, buddy, or combination of selected keyword and buddy.

Abstract: Media can be presented based on location associated with presentation of media (e.g., physical location of a device that is to present media). Presentation of media can be effectively controlled in order to automatically present a first media content (e.g., a list of songs, an album) in accordance with a first set of media presentation attributes or parameters (e.g., volume associated with presentation of audible media) at a first location, while a second media content is automatically presented in accordance with a second set of media presentation attributes or parameters when the current location is changed to a second location.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a system is disclosed allowing a cable subscriber to identify a movie title that is available for viewing using a VOD service offered by a cable service provider to be included in a list of favorite movie titles, where the list is associated with the viewer. The viewer can be informed of a point in time when one or more movies on the viewer's favorite list will no longer be available for viewing using the VOD service. In another embodiment, the viewer can be informed of a point in time when one or more movies on the viewer's favorite list will be available for viewing using the VOD service. The viewer can request recommendation of similar movie titles relative to a title identified in the list of favorite movie titles. Various other functions can be indicated by the viewer when viewing the list.

Abstract: In embodiments of an adaptive timeshift service, a live content server distributes live television content to television client devices. The live television content from the live content server can be recorded into a buffer of a timeshift server as the live television content is being distributed. Both the live television content from the live content server and recorded television content can be simultaneously recorded into the buffer of the timeshift server.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the disclosed subject matter provide methods and systems to automatically identify popular television programs based on the viewing of broadcast television programs by at least some of the subscribers of a television distribution system. One or more of the popular television programs identified are stored and offered to one or more of the subscribers on-demand. Subscribers can obtain delivery of at least one of the stored popular television programs for viewing on a subscriber television.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for archiving media content, and more particularly to archiving television and radio broadcasts for later delivery, on-demand, via the Internet. A capture server is used to receive and gather a plurality of media sources for archiving and subsequent delivery to client users. The capture server is capable of receiving numerous digital or analog media signals from a variety of media sources, including transmission through traditional broadcast, coaxial cable, the Internet, personal and public camera systems and the like, and converting these media signals into addressable blocks of media content. Furthermore, the capture server is capable of encoding received media signals, particularly analog media signals, applying an application programming interface and preparing the media signals for implementation by the system in an identifiable form or architecture.

Abstract: An online video distribution network includes an online video portal and an online video merchant. In one embodiment, when the consumer orders a video, the merchant provides a pick-up ticket to the consumer. The portal uses the merchant identity in the pick-up ticket to connect to the merchant, and the merchant uses a product identity in the pick-up ticket to retrieve and send the video to the portal. In another embodiment, the portal provides the consumer with a drop-off ticket, which is provided to the merchant. The merchant connects to the portal using the portal identity in the drop-off ticket, and sends the video and a customer identity in the drop-off ticket to the portal. The portal determines a consumer record associated with the consumer identity and stores the video in the consumer record. The consumer can then easily access the video at the portal.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for selecting, purchasing and delivering content to users of a network so that the user has “virtual” ownership of and access to the content, thereby obviating the need for physical media (e.g., DVDs or CDs). In an exemplary embodiment, the network comprises a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network, and on-demand (OD) sessions or broadcast modes are used to deliver the virtual content stored at the head-end (or hub site) to the requesting owner. The purchased content is associated with one or more users when stored, thereby providing the owner(s) unlimited access thereto, without the costs and effort associated with renting/purchasing and maintaining DVDs. The content may also comprise new release content, which would otherwise not be available over the network at that time but for the purchase and delivery mechanisms of the invention. Various other complementary features for enhancing the user's virtual ownership experience are also disclosed.

Abstract: A personal video service manager can store one or more personal video assets on a server. A personal video asset can include a recording of a broadcast stream of a broadcast asset or an asset that has been pre-authored in a personal video asset format. Upon receiving a request from a subscriber to receive the personal video asset, the personal video service manager can facilitate a connection between the server and the subscriber for distributing the personal video asset from the server to the subscriber.

Abstract: A recording apparatus receives, with respect to an identical program, high image quality digital broadcasting data and low image quality digital broadcasting data, records the high image quality program data and the low image quality program data in a recording medium. When a cellular phone device is connected to the recording apparatus, the recording apparatus transfers the recorded low image quality program data to the cellular phone device via a communication interface. The recording apparatus transmits, to the portable cellular phone device, management information of the end of playback and deletion of the first program data whose program is identical to that of the transferred second program data.

Abstract: A scheme for retrieving digital multimedia content from a network node. A message is provided to the network node by a client application executing on a digital multimedia device, wherein the message includes a multidimensional pointer to a depository of digital multimedia content associated with the network node as well as a timing parameter operable to indicate when the message is to take effect. The multidimensional pointer contains a relative time offset variable as well as a plurality of media identifier dimensions corresponding to a plurality of nested hierarchical levels into which the digital multimedia content is organized. Responsive to the message, content from a particular content source identified by the multidimensional pointer is streamed to the digital multimedia device at a time indicated responsive to the timing parameter.

Abstract: A queue management module receives a message to queue location information for multimedia content. The queue management module stores the location information in a queue corresponding to a subscriber. The queue management module receives a message for location information from a video distribution module. The queue management module transmits a message for retrieval of multimedia content to the video distribution module. In other examples, a queue agent module transmits a message for location information for multimedia content to a queue management module. The queue agent module receives a message for retrieval of content from the queue management module. The queue agent module retrieves the multimedia content from the remote content server using the location information received in the message for retrieval of content. A data storage module identifies available storage in limited storage provided for the subscriber and stores the retrieved multimedia content in the limited storage for the subscriber.

The system and method additionally provide website community building mechanisms to community members, thereby allowing the members to customize the actual community websites that many companies and website owners seek in order to enhance e-commerce revenue generation.

Abstract: A content distribution network (CDN) system is disclosed, where the system includes a content distribution device and at least one media server. Storage media with different characteristics are mounted on the media server or storage media with different characteristics are mounted on media servers. The content distribution device is configured to select a storage medium for content according to a mapping relationship between the attributes of the content and the characteristics of the storage medium, and distribute the content to the storage medium through the media server on which the storage medium is mounted. A content distribution method and a content distribution device are also provided. Because the content of different types is distributed to storage media with different characteristics, the cost of the storage medium in the CDN system is reduced, and the storage utilization ratio is increased.

Abstract: A video segment can be shared over a computer network by first receiving the video segment at a receiving computer on the network. The receiving computer assures that the video segment is in a streaming video format, and creates at least one identification tag for the video segment. The receiving computer also stores the video segment, and communicates the identification tag to another computer on the network. Upon subsequent receipt of that identification tag, the receiving computer streams the video segment to a destination computer on the network.

Abstract: An efficient near video on demand (NVOD) service for various client environments is provided. The NVOD service method for transmitting video data including moving pictures to a plurality of clients in a network includes identifying a relative network bandwidth “m” of a client with respect to a video playout bandwidth, dividing the video data into data segments having different sizes according to the relative network bandwidth “m” and transmitting the data segments to the client through a plurality of channels.

Abstract: A method begins by a processing module receiving a plurality of playback requests for a stored program, wherein the stored program is stored in a dispersed storage network (DSN) memory as a plurality of groups of sets of encoded data slices. For each of the plurality of playback requests, the method continues with the processing module storing a first group of the plurality of groups of sets of encoded data slices in a playback DSN memory to produce a first buffered group, outputting the first buffered group to a requesting device corresponding to the each of the plurality of playback requests, storing a second group of the plurality of groups of sets of encoded data slices in the playback DSN memory to produce a second buffered group, and outputting the second buffered group to the requesting device.

Abstract: A method and on-demand computing system for hierarchical caching of content in an on-demand computing device. The method receives, at the on-demand computing device, a request to send media content to a playback device, where the media content is stored in a media library of a content server. The method retrieves the media content from a hierarchical cache for the on-demand computing device, and sends the media content to the playback device. The hierarchical cache includes a first cache, a second cache, and the content library, where the first cache has a length based on an age of the second cache.

Abstract: A sparse streaming system provides a first-class means for sparse metadata to be added to streaming media presentations and to be delivered using an integrated data channel that is cacheable using readily available HTTP-based Internet caching infrastructure for increased scalability. The sparse streaming system stores a reference to a sparse track within a continuous track. If a continuous fragment arrives at the client that refers to a sparse fragment that the client has not yet retrieved, then the client requests the sparse fragment. In addition, each sparse fragment may include a backwards reference to the sparse fragment created immediately prior. The references in the continuous fragments make the client aware of new sparse track fragments, and the backwards references in the sparse track fragments ensure that the client has not missed any intervening sparse track fragments.

Abstract: Live television broadcast and other information and entertainment programs, e.g., videos-on-demand (VOD), are provided to a user through a communications network, e.g., a cable network. A processing unit is employed at an headend of the communications network to respond to user requests for PVR-like functions, e.g., pausing, rewinding and fast-forwarding, to be performed on the program content being viewed. The processing unit in accordance with the invention causes a delivery of an appropriate version of the program content to meet such user requests.

Abstract: A system and a method for creating and managing an Internet Protocol television personal movie library are disclosed. An access request for a movie library server and a personal movie library is received over a provider network. A movie search request for an on-demand movie is received over the provider network. The movie library server is searched for the on-demand movie. If the on-demand movie is located in the movie library server, then the on-demand movie is added to the personal movie library. If the on-demand movie is not located in the movie library server, then a content provider is connected to over a public network, the on-demand movie is downloaded from the content provider over the public network, and the on-demand movie is added to the personal movie library.

Abstract: A bi-directional audio cable assembly (10) (BACA 10) that functions in combination with an audio amplifier (90), a microphone (92) and a pair of headphones (94). The BACA (10) consists of a single cable that includes an XLR cable (12) that is integrated with a TRS cable (52). The XLR cable (12) has a first end (14) having an XLR plug (44) that is attached to the input of the audio amplifier (90), and a second end (18) having an XLR socket (46) that is attached to the microphone (92). Likewise, the integrated TRS cable (52) has a first end (54) having a TRS plug (64) that is attached to the output of the audio amplifier (90), and a second end (58) that is attached to the pair of headphones (94). The BACA (10) allows a single person to produce an audio signal that is applied via the microphone (92) to the input of the audio amplifier (90) and to hear the same produced audio signal via the pair of headphones (94) without interference from cable-internal noise or external ambient noise.

Abstract: An apparatus comprising a video transcoding engine (VTE), a video source storage (VSS) coupled to the VTE, a network engine (NE) coupled to the VTE and in communications with a plurality of user devices, and a media management system (MMS) coupled to the VTE, the VSS, and the NE, and in communications with the user devices, wherein the VSS comprises an original video source (OVS) and an adaptive video source (AVS) that corresponds to the same video content, and wherein the AVS comprises a content format that is more frequently delivered to the user devices than a plurality of other delivered content formats of the video content other than the OVS.

Abstract: The invention comprises system and method for offloading a processor tasked with calendar processing of channel status information. The method comprises multiplexing channel status information received from a plurality of physical interfaces; grouping the channels based on bandwidth; comparing current and previous status information of a group of channels in a first memory; sending current channel status to the processor only if the status of any of the channels in the group has changed; and periodically synchronizing channel status information in the first memory to status information in the processor's memory. The system comprises: multiplexer to combine channel status information received from the interfaces and means for grouping, based on bandwidth, the channels; hardware assist engine to send current channel status to the processor only if channel status has changed; and device to synchronize channel status information in the hardware assist engine to status information in the processor's memory.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for content, media and data delivery and access between devices of a premises and one or more portable media devices. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises a media bridge between a portable media device (PMD) and a user's home network and/or home devices (e.g., set-top boxes, DVRs, etc.)). The apparatus is adapted to convert content stored on a PMD to a format capable of being rendered on a home device which may then store or playback the content. Control of the presentation is also provided by the bridging apparatus. The apparatus may also be adapted to transfer content from the home device to the PMD for storage or playback. In another embodiment, the apparatus may function within a home network having a trusted domain to provide content between a plurality devices on the network (and in the domain) and the PMD.

Abstract: An in-flight entertainment system is shown wherein digital content servers are interconnected with network servers such that the content servers can communicate with one another and with a portable data loader. The loader stores digital content files that are to be downloaded to the content servers. A script downloaded to each content server is executed by the server to download some of the files from the portable data loader and cross-load other files from other content servers. Alternatively, a content inventory list is downloaded to each content server that indicates which content server is to download each content file and which content servers are to receive the content file. Each content server parses the list to identify files for which it is the download server, request download of those files, identify other files that it should have and request cross-load of those files from other content servers.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for intelligently managing on-demand content in a cable services system. High demand video programs (e.g., movies, documentaries, mini-series, educational films, and the like) are stored at cable system hubs that service a number of individual cable customers. When a given video program is requested, the requested title is steamed from the hub servicing the requesting customer rather than streaming the requested program from the cable system head end. The video programs cached at the cable system hubs are determined based on attributes associated with individual video programs including time since initial release, association with other programs, association with hub locations, association with current events, and the like.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a computer system hosts a web site allowing users via the Internet to post video clips, view video clips, or provide feedback regarding a viewed video clip, wherein the computer system selects the most popular video clips based on certain criteria to make available to a video service provider. In one embodiment, the computer system transcodes the video clip received at the web site into a format compatible with a VOD system associated with a cable service provider, and generates the appropriate metadata based on input from the user posting the video clip based in part on values determined by the computer system and based in part on default values determined by an administrator. Subscribers to a cable service provider can then select and view the video clips in the VOD system by invoking a VOD service offered by the cable service provider.

The compressed and encoded audio and/or video information is sent over standard telephone, cable or satellite broadcast channels to a receiver specified by a subscriber of the service, preferably in less than real time, for later playback and optional recording on standard audio and/or video tape.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for staggercasting a plurality of content representative signals includes encoding a first and a corresponding second signal representing each of the plurality of content representative signals. A composite signal is generated comprising the plurality of first and second encoded signals. In the composite signal, each respective second encoded signal is delayed with respect to the corresponding first encoded signal. The first and second encoded signal representing a selected one of the content representative signals is extracted to reproduce the selected content representative signal. The extracted first encoded signal is decoded if an error is detected in the extracted second encoded signal, otherwise the extracted second encoded signal is decoded. When a different content representative signal is newly selected, the first extracted encoded signal is decoded until the delayed second extracted encoded signal is available.

Abstract: A synchronized data transfer system including storage processor nodes, a backbone communication switch, multiple titles subdivided into subchunks and distributed across the nodes, a user process executed on a first node, a transfer process executed on a second node, and a management process executed on a management node. The user process sends a timestamped read request to request a corresponding subchunk. The transfer process sends a message to the management process for each received read request, where each message identifies source and destination nodes. The management process broadcasts transmit commands to initiate sequential transmit periods, receives the messages, and selects from among the received messages to ensure that each node sends and/or receives no more than one subchunk at a time. The management process sends a transmit request for each selected message, and the transfer process sends a subchunk identified by a transmit request in response to the transmit command.

The server 2-1 sends the schedule information on a designated program to the video recording/reproducing apparatus 11 through the network 1.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for efficiently providing video on demand services to a cable television subscriber. The provider system consists of two major subsystems. The first subsystem, called a video server, streams video to video on demand subscribers through the cable television network. The second subsystem, called the transaction server, performs virtually all remaining provider functions including, security, accounting, storage and spooling of video data, etc. The transaction server preferably uses a large scale mainframe computer. The video server subsystem may be a partitioned portion of same large scale mainframe computer.
