  • Patent number: 11585208
Abstract: A method for configuring a bottom hole assembly (BHA) includes receiving bending moment values for the BHA, curvature values and drilling conditions for a wellbore, and processing the bending moment values to create a representation of the curvature of the drilled wellbore. Processing the bending moment values includes selecting a set of curvature values in a specified range for a selected location, calculating a bending moment value for each curvature value, and determining an actual wellbore curvature at the location by matching the received bending moment value to one of the calculated bending moment values. The method further includes generating a representation of an actual path of the wellbore using selected curvature values at a plurality of wellbore locations, comparing the actual path of the wellbore with a planned path of the wellbore; and based on the comparison, determining a configuration of the BHA to drill a next wellbore.

  • Patent number: 10858897
Abstract: A coiled tubing apparatus is described for use in wellbore operations. The apparatus includes a coiled tubing strand that may be deployed into a wellbore to convey a tool to a subterranean location. A signal cable extends through the coiled tubing strand to facilitate communication between a data acquisition unit at a surface location and the subterranean tool. Upper and lower detector elements are operably associated with the signal cable to detect forces applied to the signal cable at lower and upper ends of the signal cable. The operator may employ forces to adopt corrective measures to ensure the signal cable does not become damaged or loose communication with either the downhole tool or the data acquisition unit. Since the coiled tubing strand and the signal cable may experience elongation at different rates, forces are applied to the signal cable that could jeopardize the wellbore operation if not managed.

The strain sensor (102) is operably connected to circuitry that is operable to identify changes in a property of the strain sensor (98) indicative of the strain being experienced by the strain sensor (98), which is representative of the strain experienced by the elastomeric element (98).

Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for measuring subterranean strain. The methods and apparatus use fluid expansion principles to compensate for temperature variations and increase the accuracy of the strain measurements. The methods and apparatus contemplate the use of multiple fluid chambers according to some embodiments in order to remove temperature dependence from stress or strain measurements.

  • Patent number: 6957574
Abstract: Improved methods and apparatuses for directly monitoring well casing strain and structural integrity are disclosed that allows for monitoring of potentially damaging strain from any orientation or mode and over long stretches of well casing. In a preferred embodiment, optical fiber sensors are housed within a housing and attached to the exterior surface of the casing. The sensors may be aligned parallel, perpendicular, or at an appropriate angle to the axis of the casing to detect axial, hoop, and shear stresses respectively. The sensors are preferably interferometrically interrogatable and are capable of measuring both static and dynamic strains such as those emitted from microfractures in the well casing. Analysis of microfracture-induced acoustics includes techniques for assessment of relatively high frequencies indicative of the presence of microfractures.

Abstract: A survey tool for use in a wellbore includes a downhole portion having an axis. The downhole portion is adapted to move within the wellbore with the axis generally parallel to the wellbore. The survey tool further includes a first acceleration sensor mounted at a first position within the downhole portion. The first acceleration sensor is adapted to generate a first signal indicative of an acceleration of the first acceleration sensor along the axis. The survey tool further includes a second acceleration sensor mounted at a second position within the downhole portion. The second position is spaced from the first position by a non-zero distance along the axis. The second acceleration sensor is adapted to generate a second signal indicative of an acceleration of the second acceleration sensor along the axis.

Abstract: An in-situ rock strength measurement tool features a sub that is integrated into a drill string, or other downhole tool string, and lowered into an uncased borehole. The sub includes a plurality of lateral pistons that are selectively extendable in a radial orientation to engage the wall of the borehole. The pistons exert a force against a defined area of the borehole wall and penetrate the borehole across the defined area. The force needed to penetrate the borehole may then be measured and used to calculate rock strength and to determine other formation properties.
