  • Patent number: 9097620
Abstract: A method, and apparatus, for determining bend resistance of a sample includes applying a weight to a sample and measuring an amount of deflection of the sample caused by applying the weight. The sample is provided on a sample holder and an initial position of the sample is measured with respect to the sample holder. A weight is applied to the sample and a change in position from the initial position to a deflection position of the sample due to the weight applied to the sample is measured. An amount of deflection of the sample is determined by dividing the change in position by the basis weight.

Abstract: A method of determining a testing volume for a micronaire measurement by containing a fiber sample within a micronaire chamber having a length and at least one movable end wall. A flow is initiated along the length of the micronaire chamber. The fiber sample is compressed within the micronaire chamber by advancing the movable end wall, and the advancement of the movable end wall is stopped when at least one property of the flow attains a set point. The position of the movable end wall defines the testing volume. In this manner, there is provided a convenient method of setting a testing volume and acquiring the information needed to take a micronaire measurement.

Abstract: An apparatus for determining at least one dielectric property of a capacitor arrangement, and especially for capacitive examination of a moving elongated test subject such as yarn. It contains an alternating signal generator for applying an electric alternating signal to the capacitor arrangement. The capacitor arrangement is uncoupled from the alternating signal generator by means of an amplifier in such a way that it does not relevantly influence the basic frequency and the signal shape of the applied alternating signal. Detection means detect an electric measuring variable of an electric signal tapped from the capacitor arrangement. The alternating signal generator is set up in such a way that at least one of the basic frequency and the signal shape of the applied alternating signal can be changed.

Abstract: A method and device for metrologically differentiating material regions, namely majority regions and minority regions of a page-like, web-like or sheet-like material. At least one sensor receives a measuring signal of variable amplitude, the amplitude being variable depending on the material region located in a spatial detection range of the sensor. The amplitude is increased by a controllable amplifier. The material is moved relatively to the sensor such that majority regions are located in the spatial detection range of the sensor more frequently than minority regions. The method is characterized in that in phases, in which majority regions undergo examination by means of the sensor, by means of the amplifier regulation of the amplitude to a set point is carried out and the sensor generates a signal “majority region”, and that in situations, in which the amplitude undergoes a sufficient change, the sensor generates a signal “minority region”.

Abstract: A device, assembly and method for clamping single fibers that utilizes snubbing surfaces simultaneously with magnetic gripping action are described. The device can be fabricated at miniature sizes with very low mass and volume, which are desirable requirements for testing of small fibers in highly sensitive force-transducing load frames. Advantageously, the combined use of snubbing surfaces and magnetic gripping greatly reduces the probability of slippage or fiber failure at the grip during testing.

Abstract: A method for assessing the cure status of a fibrous blanket manufactured with mineral fibers and binder is disclosed and comprises a first, qualitative assessment of cure followed by a second quantitative assessment that utilizes one of alternative procedures depending on the outcome of the first, qualitative assessment. For example, a first visual inspection may qualitatively reveal areas or undercure, upon which a second pH test of samples extracted from undercured areas may quantify the degree of undercure. Conversely, if the visual inspection reveals no undercured areas, a different sampling procedure examines different blanket areas for overcure status using a similar pH test.

Abstract: A device and method for measuring the thickness of a cloth when the predetermined pressing force is applied to the cloth. A device for measuring a cloth thickness includes a stationary part having a base surface; a movable member having a pressing end to press a cloth against the base surface; a movable member driving mechanism to move the movable member linearly without rotating around itself from an initial position up to an over-pressing position where the pressing end presses the cloth against the base surface with a force exceeding the predetermined pressing force; a load cell for detecting a force with which the pressing end presses the cloth against the base surface; and a pulse coder for detecting the space between the base surface and the pressing end when a force value detected by the load cell reaches the predetermined pressing force.

  • Patent number: 8156802
Abstract: The invention relates to a force sensor for measuring a bearing force of a roller deviating a web of material. The force sensor includes a base element on which at least one sensor element is supported. The sensor element has at least one plate which can be elastically deformed by the bearing force and is provided with at least one force transducer. The sensor element is loaded by a pressure piece into which the bearing force is introduced by means of a spring. The spring has a larger range of spring—in the direction of the force—than the elastically deformable plate for the same load. In order to limit the action of the force on the sensor element, an annular abutment is provided, against which the pressure piece can be pressed flat. The abutment is provided around the sensor element.

  • Patent number: 8132454
Abstract: Sensor components having sides facing the sheet material have one or a plurality of front elements which are detachable and replaceable with low effort. So in the case of wear of the sensor fronts, entire sensor components no longer have to be replaced but only individual front elements of the sensor component are replaced. The front elements do not contact the inner area of the housing and the sensitive measuring elements arranged therein. When the front elements are detached from the housing for maintenance, the measuring elements remain dustproof encapsulated in the housing of the sensor component. The front elements preferably have a comb structure which improves the transport of the bank notes at the transition between the sensor components.
