Patent number: 7663503Abstract: A water meter has a meter register having an encoder having electromagnetic wave emitters, e.g., infrared emitters to measure water flow and direction of water flow through the meter. The encoder has two of three spaced emitters directing infrared rays at predetermined time intervals toward a rotating detector wheel having a reflective surface portion and a non-reflective surface portion facing the emitters and an infrared sensor. The reflective surface portion of the detecting wheel reflects the infrared rays incident thereon toward the sensor. A microprocessor connected to the sensor acts on signals from the sensor to determine material flow. The meter register transmits the signal to a distant receiver. The microprocessor of a meter register has an algorithm to prevent the meter register from sending signals until after the meter register or a water meter having a meter register is installed and water moved through the meter.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2006Date of Patent: February 16, 2010Assignee: Arad Measuring Technologies Ltd.Inventor: Dan Winter

Patent number: 7043980Abstract: A water meter has a measurement insert disposed in a meter housing, a measurement display, an intake connection and a discharge connection. An impeller is disposed on a shaft in a measurement insert housing, and a first shaft end of the shaft interacts with the measurement display. A supporting part is disposed between the meter housing and the measurement insert housing. Because of the supporting part, forces, acting in the axial direction of a second shaft end of the shaft through the measurement insert housing, can be absorbed and the forces can be conducted into the meter housing.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2005Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: ELSTER Messtechnik GmbHInventor: Roger Frank

Patent number: 5261275Abstract: A device which monitors the through passage of incompressible fluids such as water that relies upon a nutating disk-type transducer associated with a spherical hollow core. The disk includes a spindle which precesses in the presence of a sensor. A display panel is driven by a microcontroller which converts the precession of the spindle to useful output as a function of time whereby the precession correlates with volume flow through the nutating disk transducer.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1991Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Inventor: Robert J. Patent number: 5251480Abstract: An improved drive shaft for a positive displacement type water meter includes a flexible spring arm formed on one end of the shaft for engaging the drive spindle of a nutating disk measuring element disposed within a water meter. The other end of the drive shaft is connected to a magnetic drive which, in turn, is magnetically coupled to a conventional mechanical register. Under normal conditions, the nutating disk measuring element and drive spindle oscillate in the water meter at a rate proportional to water meter flow. The drive spindle engages the spring arm of the drive shaft causing the drive shaft and magnet to rotate. The magnet is coupled through the water meter casing to a second magnet in the register. Rotation of the second magnet is used to drive the mechanical register to register water consumption. In the event the first magnet within the meter casing becomes frozen to the casing because of external freezing conditions, the drive spindle will snap past the flexible spring arm.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1992Date of Patent: October 12, 1993Assignee: Schlumberger Industries, Inc.Inventors: Charles P. Patent number: 3994168Abstract: Prior art, as noted in cited references, shows that the positive displacement fluid meter function is expanded by utilizing rotational drag speed sensing means for modulating electrical energy or pneumatic pressure inputs in consonance with rate of fluid flow; and electromechanical pulse generating means for remotely totalizing fluid flow. Prior art further establishes use of a magnetic coupling means for actuating the fluid meter indicator. The present invention is uniquely distinguishable from prior art by virtue of its structural features, added utility, reliability and singular common means for the actuation of electrical, electromechanical and fluidic pressure means for the remote indication of total flow, flow rates and flow control while simultaneously indicating total flow and flow rate locally as required.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1974Date of Patent: November 30, 1976Inventor: Andrew Varga
