Rotating Machinery Or Device Patents (Class 73/660)
  • Patent number: 6591682
Abstract: A device for detecting or analyzing machinery damage is used preferably in the determination of defects in roller bearings. Pulse-like machinery or bearing noise acquired by a sensor is converted into special time signals. These time signals correspond to events which are basically periodic in occurrence. The time signals are sent to one, preferably several, classification units depending on the time differences. Before classification, combination of adjacent time signals or events is performed using their pulse heights. The combining is multiplicative or obeys some other bivalent relation. Classification forms a frequency distribution with an abscissa which is divided into time units. Specific characteristics of the frequency distribution provide information on incipient or manifest machinery damage.

  • Patent number: 6584849
Abstract: A method of characterizing the vibration of a plurality of rotating blades (12), such as turbine blades in a gas turbine engine, includes the steps of providing a single strain gauge (16A) on a single one (12A) of the blades and providing either one or two tip timing probes (22A, 22B) on a casing surrounding the blades. The data from the strain gauge (16A) allows the vibration of the single blade (12A) to be fully characterized while the data from the tip timing probes (22A, 22B) allows the amplitudes or velocities of vibration of all the blades to be determined. The relationship between the data from the tip timing probes for the single blade (12A) and the stress data from the strain gauge may be established. This relationship may then be assumed to apply to all the blades, thus allowing the stresses induced in all the blades by the vibrations to be determined.

  • Patent number: 6571636
Abstract: A wheel-type inspection device includes within the wheel structure a sensor head. The sensor head carries both ultrasonic transducers and a surface tracking structure maintained at fixed distance relative to the transducers. In operation, the surface tracking structure remains against the inner surface of the tire and thereby maintains a fixed distance between the transducers and the surface of the work piece under inspection. As a result, reflected sound energy analysis need not compensate for variations in distance between the transducers and the work piece because no such variations in distance occur under the disclosed device.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for analysis of roller bearings (15) which have been installed in machines, by means of a sensor (10) a signal being recorded which is produced by the rolling motion, and the signal amplitude is evaluated in order to determine the presence and optionally the depth of the damage in the roller bearing running surface (56). In doing so a dynamic model of the roller bearing in the machine is considered, in which at least the bilateral contact stiffnesses (4, 6) of the rolling elements are considered in order to determine the transfer function between the force caused by the damage and the corresponding sensor signal which is then taken into account in the signal amplitude evaluation. The invention furthermore relates to a corresponding analysis device.

Abstract: A method and system for monitoring the condition of a bearing mounted on a rotating shaft, particularly one present in an aircraft gas turbine engine, where the vibration sensor that monitors the bearing is remote therefrom but proximate to the rotating shaft. The vibration sensor obtains a broadband signal having frequencies that include the bearing defect peak of the monitored bearing. The broadband signal is analyzed to identify the presence of the bearing defect peak. If the bearing defect peak is present, the amplitude of this peak is quantified to determine whether degradation of the monitored bearing has at least reached a threshold criteria previously established.

Abstract: The behavior of the bogie of a muliple-axle vehicle is monitored. Accelerations of at least two axles of the bogie are measured with acceleration sensors allocated to the axles. The sensor signals are subjected to a Fourier transformation in FFT units. The frequency profiles resulting from the Fourier transform are compared with profiles that are stored in memory. Differences that are detected are compared with threshold values and messages are correspondingly sent to the system that controls the vehicle. Abstract: An apparatus and method monitors the condition of a bearing/shaft assembly by forming diagnostics based on spectral analysis of assembly's vibration. Baseline parameters are determined by a microprocessor analysis of the vibration spectra, comparing actual peaks to the peaks predicted by a model. The microprocessor estimates rotation rate and preferably number of rolling elements by attempting to fit the model to the actual vibrational spectrum, by varying the assumptions. Baseline profiles are formed from one or more selected tones and preferably also harmonics thereof, to characterize the bearing/shaft assembly. The baseline profiles and parameters are compared against later acquired vibrational characteristics, and the comparison is used to diagnose bearing and/or shaft conditions.

Abstract: A method for determining a minimal set of adjustments for the blades of a rotor supported by a supporting structure for reducing rotation-induced vibration in the supporting structure at at least one harmonic rotation order and/or for reducing track deviation while maintaining structure vibration over at least one harmonic order within an acceptable limit. In one embodiment, a relationship is established by which vibration of the supporting structure may be calculated at harmonic orders of rotor rotation from Fourier coefficients of adjustment, Fourier coefficients of unit vibration influence and Fourier coefficients of vibration measurements. Thereafter, a value is determined for each selected Fourier coefficient of adjustment that provides a desired virtual reduction of vibration of the supporting structure at the harmonic order of the selected Fourier coefficient of adjustment using the vibration relationship.

Abstract: An apparatus for detecting and transmitting impact data is disclosed for use in monitoring early-stage development of harmful mechanical conditions for reciprocating machinery. The impact transmitter device includes a single self-contained unit having a stainless steel housing which contains an impact accelerometer, a detector circuit, a measurement and timing circuit, a 4-20 mA driver circuit, independent polarity circuit, and an electromagnetic impulse protection unit. The impact transmitter device further includes a field adjustable static threshold defining the severity of the impact detected, and a field adjustable reference time window interval. The variable severe impact level threshold allows an operator to isolate severe impacts from typical machine vibration. The variable time window interval allows an operator to synchronize the present invention with different machine speeds and to collect severe impact data over an appropriate time frame.

Abstract: The present invention concerns a method and device for detecting an imbalance condition in a rotating washing machine tub. An indication of a power level required to maintain a given washing machine rotation speed is compared to a predefined standard power level associated with the given rotation speed, and a tub imbalance condition is detected in response to the comparison. The predefined standard power level may be stored in a memory device accessible by a processor that is programmed to calculate the power level required to achieve the given washing machine rotation speed and compare the required power level to the predefined standard power level to detect the tub imbalance condition.

Abstract: An apparatus for testing at least one joint includes an articulation device and a defect detection system. The first joint being tested has an inner race rotatably mounted within an outer race, a driving shaft connected to either the inner race or outer race, and a load bearing shaft connected to the other one of the inner race or outer race. The articulation device connects to the driving shaft and articulates the driving shaft to articulate the first outer race with respect to the first inner race without rotating the driving and load bearing shafts. The defect detection system detects first signals from the first joint during the articulation of the first outer race with respect to the first inner race and determines if there is a defect in the first joint based on the detected first signals.

Abstract: A method for determining the operational condition of a rotary machine is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of monitoring the machine under a baseline operating condition and collecting baseline vibrational data. A preselected number of baseline parameters are calculated from the baseline vibrational data. Next, a first baseline operational indicator is calculated from the baseline parameters, and the baseline parameters and the first baseline operational indicator are stored in a memory location. The machine is then monitored under a subsequent operating condition, and subsequent vibrational data is collected during the subsequent operating condition. A preselected number of subsequent operating parameters is calculated from the subsequent vibrational data, and a first subsequent operational indicator is calculated from the preselected number of subsequent operating parameters. Finally, the baseline data is compared to the subsequent operating data to determine the condition of the machine.
