Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for continuously measuring the soil strength on-the-fly and at different depths. The apparatus includes a downwardly extending probe having an impedance sensor mounted on a leading edge thereof so as to be impacted by the soil as the probe is moved in a horizontal direction therethrough. A reciprocating drive is also provided which is effective for simultaneously oscillating the probe in an up and down movement while it is passing horizontally through the soil. The mechanical impedance exerted upon the sensor is then measured as the probe is passed both horizontally and up and down through said soil, thereby providing a continuous depth-variable profile of the soil strength over a large area.

  • Patent number: 6629057
Abstract: The present invention provides improved systems and methods for verifying accurate test performance of monitoring systems, particularly for point-of-care service. Such monitoring systems typically include a test element containing the test reagent(s), and an electronic analyzer device. A blood or other patient sample is applied to the test element, which is introduced to the analyzer. As the reaction proceeds, the analyzer stores the data and outputs the testing result. Accuracy in the result is dependent upon proper functioning of both the test element and the analyzer. The systems of the present invention provide indicators to evaluate the integrity of the test elements and a verification device to evaluate the performance of the analyzer. Such systems may be provided as kits with instructions for use.

Dry and wet weights of the samples are obtained under different conditions. In certain embodiments, the material sample is an aggregate that is held in liquid in a volumetric container and the container with the liquid and aggregate is weighed. Another weight of a second sample can be obtained. The second sample is encased in an evacuated vacuum-sealed bag that is opened while immersed in a liquid bath, at which time the weight can be obtained. • Patent number: 6581445
Abstract: Method and system for monitoring and identifying moisture intrusion in soil such as is contained in landfills housing radioactive and/or hazardous waste. The invention utilizes the principle that moist or wet soil has a higher thermal conductance than dry soil. The invention employs optical time delay reflectometry in connection with a distributed temperature sensing system together with heating means in order to identify discrete areas within a volume of soil wherein temperature is lower. According to the invention an optical element and, optionally, a heating element may be included in a cable or other similar structure and arranged in a serpentine fashion within a volume of soil to achieve efficient temperature detection across a large area or three dimensional volume of soil. Remediation, moisture countermeasures, or other responsive action may then be coordinated based on the assumption that cooler regions within a soil volume may signal moisture intrusion where those regions are located.

Abstract: Moisture management indexes are determined for a textile sandwiched between two plates. Electrical conductors arranged in concentric opposing pairs are used to measure changes in electrical resistance of the fabric. A quantity of water (or other chosen liquid) is poured down a guide pipe and changes of resistance measured against time. From this data, specific indexes are determined, in a repeatable fashion, and used for determining moisture management characteristics of the fabric.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a system and method for implementing process control for paper elasticity and thickness using sonic NDE techniques. The system may, for example, generate ultrasound waves in a test object during the manufacturing process. A detector such as an interferometer may be used to detect the ultrasound waves. An interpreter or analyzer may determine the thickness and/or elastic properties of paper from the waves. Then, a control system may determine and implement an appropriate control action on the process.

A sample conveyor moves a sample of the concentrate to be analyzed to an aluminum pan that receives and holds the sample of the concentrate. A horizontal linear slide having a pneumatic vertical lift mounted to rotary arm is detachably connected to the aluminum pan by gripping fingers that detachably engage the pan. A scale is accessible by the conveyance member for weighing the sample. An oven also accessible by the conveyance member has a door that has a complimentary shape relative to a cross section of the sample container and conveyance member is used for heating the sample. A programmable logic controller controls the conveyance member and the oven door. A data processing unit receives data from the scale and determines a moisture content based on the data.

Abstract: Testing process and apparatus for determining absorption properties of a porous specimen. The porous specimen is brought in a predetermined state of contact with the body of water held by a reservoir, for inducing water absorption in the porous specimen. A weight of the porous specimen is monitored for a predetermined time period once the contact is established to produce weight data over time. The predetermined state of contact is maintained substantially constant during the time period by permanent circulation of water in the reservoir. The absorption properties of the porous specimen are determined as a function of the weight data over time.
