Patent number: 5303574Abstract: An article (40), such as a piece of manufacturing tooling, is modified prior to use by treating a portion of its surface (38) to be worn so that the treated surface worn more than a preselected amount has a different appearance than the treated surface worn less than the preselected amount, using a treatment process in which the treated surface is at least as wear resistant as the untreated surface. In one approach, the surface (38) is treated by implanting ions to a preselected depth. The ions are chosen so that the substrate has a different color at depths less than the preselected depth than does the substrate at depths greater than the preselected depth. After wear, the treated surface is visually inspected for color variations that indicate wear to more than the preselected depth. The surface treatment can also be accomplished by ion implanting or ion beam mixing a previously deposited surface coating.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1992Date of Patent: April 19, 1994Assignees: Hughes Aircraft Company, General Motors Corp.Inventors: Jesse N. Patent number: 4864852Abstract: Method and apparatus for measuring the cut resistance of flexible materials, such as films, fabrics, felts and papers. A flexible material is wrapped around a mandrel that is rotated at a predetermined speed. A cam attached to the rotating mandrel allows a cutting edge, such as a razor blade, to repeatedly fall on the material covering the mandrel. The cutting edge repeatedly contacts the material, in the same location and with the same predetermined force, until the cutting edge penetrates the material and makes electrical contact with the mandrel. When edge-to-mandrel contact is made, the rotation of the mandrel is automatically stopped. The number of rotations (i.e. cutting cycles) required to penetrate the material is noted and used as a measure of the relative cut resistance of the material.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1988Date of Patent: September 12, 1989Assignee: Allied-Signal Inc.Inventor: Mark B. Patent number: 4791807Abstract: A novel apparatus for determining the relative hardness and abrasion resistance of industrial film coatings and linings is disclosed. In its preferred form, the apparatus comprises a rigid handle incorporating a pre-set angle between its flat lower surface and a flexible spring blade attached at one end to the handle, and a scoring stylus attached at the other end of the spring blade. By placing the bottom of the handle on the surface of the film coating or lining whose relative hardness and abrasion resistance is to be determined, the spring blade is caused to deflect and thereby exert a constant and predetermined force through the scoring stylus onto the film coating or lining. By drawing or pulling the handle across the surface of the film coating or lining while maintaining the lower surface of the handle in complete contact with the film coating or lining, the scoring stylus creates a scratch on the surface of the film coating or lining.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1986Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Inventor: S. Patent number: 4584865Abstract: A canned motor pump has a bearing wear sensing device comprising a pair of ring elements having opposing surfaces. The outer element is mounted fixed with respect to the stator and the inner element is mounted for rotation with the rotor. The outer, fixed element is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. An ohmmeter measures the resistance between the elements through the coating. As the motor bearings wear, displacement of the rotating element causes wear of the coating which reduces its thickness and decreases the resistance between the sensing elements through the coating. One conductor of the ohmmeter is connected directly to the outer, fixed element, and the other ohmmeter conductor is connected through the conductive bearings to the rotating element. Thus, the ohmmeter can dynamically measure the motor bearing wear.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1984Date of Patent: April 29, 1986Assignee: Lawrence Pump and Engine CompanyInventor: Clement Hutchins

Patent number: 4459842Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus suitable for accomplishing a roll testing method. The object of the present invention is accomplished by hot rolling steel strip under the specified rolling condition using small size testing apparatus having about a tenth size of the actual rolling mill and good reciprocity like said rolling mill. The wear state (roughness), or new state, of the roll surface is estimated by a known type of surface roughness meter from the roll surface generated after hot-rolling the stell strip by the small size testing apparatus of the present invention. Said testing apparatus has the structure in which both the diameter of the rolls and the circumferential speed of the rolls are about a tenth of those of actual rolling mill and the number of the contact times (contact interval) between the rolls and the stell strip per the rolling time is the same to that of the actual rolling mill.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1981Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Inventors: Junji Kihara, Keiji Watabe, Kouichi Douya, Kazumoto Nakamura, Shouzo Takeuchi

Patent number: 4446717Abstract: Apparatus for testing abrasive wear on a surface of a sample. Flowable abrasive material is fed from a barrel against the surface. The sample is mounted reciprocally in the direction of feeding of the material, and urged by a force opposing that of the material thereon. The rate of feeding is controlled to maintain a gap between the end of the barrel and the sample so that the material flows continuously through the gap.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1982Date of Patent: May 8, 1984Assignee: Jenike & Johanson, Inc.Inventors: Jerry R. Patent number: 4442707Abstract: In accordance with the centrifugal erosion testing method of the invention, a material specimen is rotated with a flat surface facing the direction of rotation and a narrow stream of an abrasive particle slurry is concurrently flowed at a preselected rate in a radial direction across the flat surface, the rotating step being at sufficiently high angular velocity to urge the abrasive particles by Coriolis acceleration into a compacted mass against the flat surface and erode material therefrom by scouring type action as the particles flow radially outward. The rotating and flowing steps are continued for a sufficient preselected duration to erode material to a measurable depth, and the depth to which the flat surface is worn by the abrasive particles is measured as an indication of the erosion resistance of the specimen material.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1982Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Assignee: Allis-Chalmers CorporationInventor: John J. Patent number: 4404840Abstract: An abrasive wear tester wherein a segment of a relatively small diameter O-ring is held in contact with a rotating cylindrical disk. The disk is mounted to rotate about its longitudinal axes at a known rate for a specified period of time. The O-ring segment and cylinder are immersed in an abrasive fluid. The abrasive particles are pulled between the wear surfaces causing removal of the surface materials, predominantly the softer O-ring material. The O-ring specimen is cut from an O-ring and weighed prior to test. After the test the O-ring segment is again weighed and the weight of material removed by wear is calculated. These measurements indicate the wear resistance of the O-ring being tested. Service loads or pressures are simulated by means of a cable and weight system urging the O-ring against the cylindrical wear disk surface by means of a lever arm pulley arrangement or similar loading device.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1981Date of Patent: September 20, 1983Inventors: Bruce H. Patent number: 4382253Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the abrasion depth of an outer surface of a substantially stationary body such as a tool which rests in working position against a rotating body such as a shaft to be ground. A measurement pin is inserted in a first direction into a measurement sleeve arranged in the stationary body, displaceably in the sleeve by action of one end of the pin against the shaft. During the grinding operation as a result of the abrasion on the surface of the stationary body the measurement pin is gradually inserted further into the sleeve and upon exceeding a distance of insertion corresponding to a predetermined abrasion on the surface of the stationary body which requires replacement of the stationary body the other end of the measurement pin contracts against an electric contact disposed inside the sleeve so as to provide an alarm via an electric circuit of an indicating device. In a path detection system a desired reference length of an end length of the measurement pin is stored.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1980Date of Patent: May 3, 1983Assignee: FORTUNA-WERKE Maschinenfabrik GmbHInventor: Heinz Belthle
