Patent number: 8539843Abstract: A load indicator comprises a load bearing assembly of first and second load bearing members (23, 22) connected together to bear a lateral load applied to the first member (23), the first load bearing member defining a cavity (25) with the second load bearing member such that it is frangible above an indicator load, and the cavity (25) containing an indicator liquid which escapes from the cavity once the first load bearing member is fractured by said load. The load bearing members (22, 23) comprise cylindrical members arranged concentrically with the outer member (23) having a portion of reduced thickness to render it frangible and to define the cavity (25). The cavity (25) includes an internal volume within the second load bearing member (22). The load indicator may be configured as a load bearing pin to connect two components.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2008Date of Patent: September 24, 2013Assignee: Messier-Dowty LimitedInventors: Martyn Inns, Steve Smith

Patent number: 6739611Abstract: A sensing system employs multiple sensors utilizing mounting structure integrated into a fifth wheel hitch and which is protected from the environment, is capable of accurately measuring forces along longitudinal and vertical axes for providing information as to roll, pitch, yaw, and drawbar load and which utilizes sensors which provide output signals for display and control. In one embodiment, a fifth wheel includes mounting boxes formed on an undersurface thereof on opposite sides of the kingpin receiving slot and a force-sensing unit mounted within each of said mounting boxes. Each force-sensing unit includes a vertical sensor positioned fore and aft of the vertical hitch axis and forward and aft horizontal force sensors.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 2001Date of Patent: May 25, 2004Assignee: The Holland Group, Inc.Inventors: Jack L. Gisinger, Gerald W. Hungerink, Steven C. Dupay, Randy L. Schutt

Each force-sensing unit includes a vertical sensor positioned fore and aft of the vertical hitch axis and forward and aft horizontal force sensors. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, each of the sensors are mounted to the sensing unit utilizing elastomeric springs coupling the fifth wheel plate to the force-sensing unit and a plunger for coupling forces from said elastomeric spring to a force sensor itself.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1999Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: Holland Hitch CompanyInventors: Jack L. Patent number: 6253627Abstract: An apparatus for measuring the force applied to a thin-line towed array having a towed array hose formed as part of a thin-line towed array. Coupling components divide the interior of the towed array hose into compartments. Axial tension measurement devices are located within one compartment, and bend measurement devices are located in another compartment. These measurement devices are electrically connected to a digitization and encoding module which is in turn connected to a processing device for providing measurements of the forces on the array.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: An-Keun Peter Lee, Michael R.
