Wheel Tread, Tire, Track, Or Roadway Patents (Class 73/8)
  • Patent number: 4570472
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling lateral unstable movement and camber of a strip being rolled in which the lateral displacement and the camber magnitude of the strip being rolled are directly detected. The lateral unstable movement is controlled by changing the right and left roll gaps of the horizontal rolling mill while the camber of the strip is corrected by changing the path line through the vertical rolling mill. As a result, the lateral unstable movement of the strip can be prevented so that the rolling operation can be carried out in a stable manner. In addition, the quality of the rolled strip can be improved and the yield can be increased.

  • Patent number: 4475383
Abstract: An apparatus for testing vehicle wheels with tires and wheel hubs. A frame as an axle supporting a wheel. An annular wheel contact member surrounds the wheel and is engaged by the wheel in surface-to-surface contact. The frame is loaded by a variable or constant load to cause deflection of the axle which supports the wheel. The force condition imposed on the frame thus arises as a reaction force at the wheel when it is deflected into engagement with the wheel contact member. A drive means rotates the wheel contact member while the wheel is forceably engaged with the wheel contact member to simulate operating conditions. The apparatus can also be used to test two wheels in tandem arrangement, as well as for individual component testing of the wheel hub, hub bearings and wheel bolts.

  • Patent number: 4324128
Abstract: A bearing support for a flexible belt used on a tire testing machine wherein the belt forms the simulated road surface. The bearing is a hydrodynamic bearing which insures low friction between the belt and its support underneath the tire being tested.

  • Patent number: 4173885
Abstract: The present invention relates to a standard surface assembly that may be used in conjunction with a pendulum type variable speed friction skid tester for calibrating the same. The standard surface assembly includes a standard surface specimen, such as aluminum oxide, and, in use, is positioned below a pendulum swing arm with a rubber tire secured about the lower remote end thereof. The standard surface assembly is positioned with respect to the pendulum such that the rubber tire passes generally tangential to the upper surface thereof, and because the rubber tire is locked it will skid across the upper surface of the standard surface. For any particular swing of the pendulum arm, the energy lost in friction by the skidding wheel against the standard surface is known and consequently the variable speed friction tester can be calibrated to reflect this energy loss.

  • Patent number: 4144740
Abstract: A sample of the material to be tested is formed in a disc-shaped specimen and mounted on a spindle inserted in a mounting hole in the specimen. The spindle is rotated about a generally horizontal axis and a single blade cutter is supported above the specimen for dropping on the specimen in cutting engagement therewith. Lifting and dropping is controlled so that there is bouncing of the cutter and repeated engagement of the cutter with the specimen between the lifting and dropping. The diameter of the test specimen is measured before the test and after a predetermined time of the testing. The decrease in diameter is an indication of the cutting and chipping resistance of the material being tested.

  • Patent number: 3993270
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining whether or not a freight car in a classification yard can be adequately retarded, prior to it being moved to make up a freight train, by measuring whether the wheels of the freight car are too slippery for the car to be properly retarded to a safe speed while being moved toward the freight train.
