  • Patent number: 5916014
Abstract: An oscillating belt sander or spindle sander is disclosed. The sander includes a motor shaft that extends upwardly through a worktable that supports a workpiece. The motor shaft supports a belt sander or spindle sander sanding surface. A combined motor and mechanical drive transmits rotational and reciprocating motion to the motor shaft which includes input and output motor shaft ends. The motor operates to impart rotational motion through the output motor shaft end while the mechanical drive is connected to the input motor shaft end and also imparts reciprocating motion through the output motor shaft end. The output motor shaft end facilitates interchangeable mounting of a spindle sander sleeve or a sanding belt. Thus, the sander is readily adaptable for conversion to a belt sander or spindle sander, as may be desired.

  • Patent number: 5685148
Abstract: A drive apparatus for reversible movements of an actuator is provided with a drive element made from a shape memory alloy with one-way effect. The drive element acts upon a lever rotatable about an axle in opposition to the force of a resetting element, wherein the lever can be used as a coupling member for converting a deformation of the drive element into a movement of the actuator. The drive element is a winding with a plurality of turns of a wire, wherein the turns are fixed and arranged mechanically parallel between an anchor point and the lever so that the lever is rotatable about the axle by means of a deformation of a turn, and the tractive force acting upon the lever by means of the drive element results from the individual forces of the turns of the winding acting mechanically parallel upon the lever. The diameter of the wire is advantageously approximately equal to the standardised diameter of the crystalline grain of the shape memory alloy in the austenitic state.

Abstract: A mortising machine adapted for connection to a conventional electric motor includes a frame having rotatably mounted therein a helically-grooved shaft on which is threadedly mounted a router assembly carrying a rotatable router bit for reciprocation along the grooved shaft upon its rotation. The shaft of the router bit and the grooved shaft are both driven from a drive shaft journaled in the frame by a drive connection arrangement of pulleys and timing belts to simultaneously rotate and reciprocate the router bit for cutting a linear mortised slot. For driving the shaft of the router bit, the drive arrangement includes a pulley on each of the drive shaft and router bit shaft, a traveling idler pulley mounted on an arm pivoted on the router assembly, and a timing belt trained about the pulleys.

  • Patent number: 4436163
Abstract: A power operated tool includes a prime mover, an output member and a power transmission mechanism arranged to transmit rotary motion of the prime mover to a reciprocatory output member. The power transmission mechanism includes a first member mounted for reciprocating motion, a link coupled at one end to the first member, and a second member mounted for rotation about an axis transverse to the path of reciprocating motion of the first member. The arrangement is such that rotation of the second member reciprocates the first member and also imparts a cyclic partial rotation to the first member during said reciprocation. The second member has a bore therein spaced from the axis of rotation and inclined there towards. The bore has an axis which intersects the axis of rotation at an angle of about one quarter of the angle through which the first member partially rotates.

Abstract: A multi-speed hammer-drill has a rotary-reciprocatory output spindle journaled in its housing. A fixed hammer member is mounted about the spindle in a forward portion of the housing and a cooperating hammer member is carried on the spindle. A cam member cooperates with the rearward end of the spindle for selectively changing between drilling and hammer-drilling modes. A three-speed transmission includes an axially-shiftable gear member carried by the spindle and disposed axially between the cam member and the cooperating hammer members with two non-axially movable gears freely rotatably mounted on said spindle one on each side of the axially-shiftable gear. A key is received in a longitudinal keyway in the spindle and keys the axially-shiftable gear member to the spindle. The key has a length substantially equal to the axial distance between the non-axially movable gears for maintaining a spaced relationship therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4398374
Abstract: The grinding and polishing machine has a tool-carrying spindle (1) driven th a combined rotating and rocking action. It has a driving shaft (4) which is reciprocated axially and passes through a disc (8) which slopes at an acute angle. Above this disc is a second disc attached to the shaft, with a roller (5) attached to its periphery which rotates against the sloping disc. The tool spindle also passes through another sloping disc and through a plate (12) with a peripheral roller (16) which travels against this second sloping disc. The tool spindle carries an arm (13) with a dog projecting from it to fit into a hole in the plate to rotate the same. This plate also has a dog (14) which fits into a hole (15) in the disc attached to the driving shaft so that it transmits rotary movement for driving the tool spindle.

  • Patent number: 4366869
Abstract: A hammer drill is arranged to rotate and also apply percussive force to a tool receptacle. The percussive force is transmitted from a shaft to a drive piston which, in turn, reciprocates a percussion piston which drives the tool receptacle. The hammer drill includes a housing and a bearing rotatably mounted in the housing. The shaft is rotatably mounted in the bearing and its axis extends perpendicularly of the axis of rotation of the bearing. The bearing supports a contact rim which is in meshed engagement with the shaft. The contact rim is displaceably into frictional contact with a brake member for holding the contact rim against rotation while the bearing rotates carrying with it the shaft. Due to its meshed engagement with the contact rim, the shaft rotates about its own axis causing the drive piston to reciprocate.
