Abstract: A first shaft and a second shaft are rotatably supported by a casing in a mutually parallel but offset manner, and an intermediate member is interposed between mutually opposing axial ends of these shafts. The intermediate member transmits torque from the first shaft to the second shaft, but the intermediate member is radially slidable relative to the first shaft and is engaged with a radially offset point of the second shaft. Because the distance between the axial center line of the first shaft and the point of engagement between the intermediate member and the second shaft changes with the angular displacement of the first shaft, a desired nonlinear property can be accomplished between the angular displacements of the first shaft and the second shaft. This property can be used for achieving a desired variable gear ratio suitable for the steering device.

Abstract: A variable speed drive mechanism (4) is disclosed for use in conjunction with multi-sided prismatic convertible sign elements (22). A drive gear (32) driven at constant speed causes a mounting gear (23) to rotate at an angular velocity both slower than the angular velocity of the drive gear (32) and at a varying angular velocity. An idler gear (38) guides a flexible tension supporting element (31) as it travels between an equalizer gear (35) and the drive gear (32). Abstract: A transmission including at least two shafts and a cylindrical member supported by a frame for rotation relative thereto about axes of rotation utilizes a pair of gears and a plurality of speed-adjusting teeth for altering the relative speed of rotation between the shafts and the cylindrical member. Each of the gears is connected to a corresponding one of the shafts for rotation therewith, and the shafts are appropriately coupled to one another so that rotation of one shaft effects a rotation of the other shafts. Abstract: An engine starter apparatus comprising first and second noncircular gears, a pinion, and a starter motor. The pair of noncircular gears is interposed between a crankshaft and a ring gear of an engine, and when the speed of rotation of the first noncircular gear is kept constant, the second noncircular gear rotates the crankshaft while cyclically causing a change in the angular velocity due to its profile. Since the second noncircular gear is positioned so that the change in the angular velocity caused by its rotation can cancel a change in torque of the crankshaft, the change in the torque of the engine are not transmitted to the starter motor, thereby operating the starter motor at constant current at all times, providing such additional advantages as smaller and lighter starter motor design and reduced noise.
