Backlash Take-up Patents (Class 74/409)
  • Patent number: 4640147
Abstract: A gear assembly comprising two gears and a spring in the form of a C-shaped clip interconnecting the two gears. Two pins are provided on one of the two gears and the spring has two holes, one in each end thereof, whereby the spring can be carried by one gear in a pretressed state by means of the pin-and-hole connection. The other gear has a groove to cover the spring, thus the assembly work can be accomplished simply by resting the second gear to the first gear. An end wall of the groove engages with an end of the spring to create a spring force necessary to provide non-backlash mating with a third gear.

  • Patent number: 4630496
Abstract: A swivel shaft backlash correcting device for an arc welding robot in which backlash is eliminated, even if the gear teeth of the assembly are significantly worn. A spur gear is mounted at one end of a gear shaft, and an uprightly extending first pin is fixed to a flat part of the spur gear, the shaft being coupled through a speed reducer to an electric motor. A second pin is fixed to a flat part of a correcting gear having the same diameter and number of teeth as the spur gear and being mounted on the same shaft as the spur gear above the spur gear. A retaining ring is engaged with the first and second pins in one of a contracted or compressed state thereof so as to apply a force of expansion between the gear shaft and correcting gear. A center gear is secured to a stationary stand and engaged with the correcting gear and spur gear.

  • Patent number: 4621933
Abstract: A line spacing mechanism for printing machines comprises an electric motor which is operable to rotate selectively in either direction. A worm on the shaft of the motor meshes with a helicoidally toothed wheel to cause a platen roller to rotate in the clockwise direction or the anticlockwise direction. The motor is support pivotally by trunions and urged by a spring to eliminate radial play between the worm and toothed wheel. Another spring, lever and ball apply thrust to the motor shaft to take up axial play in its bearing, i.e. between the worm and the motor.

  • Patent number: 4433590
Abstract: An anti-backlash nut assembly is disclosed for longitudinal movement along a screw which has an external thread thereon, in response to relative rotational movement between the nut assembly and the screw. The assembly includes a first nut part having an internal thread complementary to the external thread of the screw, and a second nut part also having an internal thread complementary to the external thread of the screw. A coil spring is interconnected between the first and second nut parts for applying torque thereto and rotatably biasing the nut parts together to eliminate backlash therebetween and improve the positional accuracy of the nut assembly along the screw. A cylindrical collar is sandwiched between a pair of opposed portions of the nut parts and surrounds the coil spring. With this structural combination, the anti-backlash nut assembly can be adjustably preloaded by relatively rotating the nut parts to selectively preload the coil spring to a desired torque.

  • Patent number: 4422344
Abstract: A novel load proportional antibacklash gear drive system is provided wherein each portion of a split pinion gear is provided with a pressure chamber connected to a torque sensor and servo control unit for controlling the pressure applied individually to each split gear portion, against opposing tooth faces of the driven gear. The servo control unit provides high pressure (hydraulic or pneumatic) to a first split gear portion for drive in one direction while providing low pressure to the second split gear portion in the opposing rotational sense to maintain contact of the split gear with both faces of the driven gear at all times, thereby eliminating backlash. Upon reversal of the direction of rotation of the gear system, the servo unit provides high pressure to the second split gear portion which then acts as the driving gear, and maintains low pressure to the first split gear portion to maintain it in contact with the driven gear to prevent backlash upon reversal of the direction of drive of the gear system.

The detuner includes a ring gear detuner pinion disposed about the reverse pinion shaft. The detuner pinion has helical teeth as do the reverse pinion and bull gear. One end of the detuner pinion is slidably mounted on a ring which encircles the reverse pinion shaft adjacent the reverse pinion, and the other end of the detuner pinion is supported by a diaphragm assembly which prevents torsional and radial motion but permits axial movement of the detuner pinion. The diaphragm assembly is mounted on a sleeve which is secured to the pinion shaft and extends through, but out of contact with, the detuner pinion.

  • Patent number: 4399718
Abstract: A pivot drive for interconnecting a pair of members that are relatively pivotal about a pivot axis has a torsion rod extending along a rod axis and rotatable by an appropriate drive relative to one of the members. This rod has outer ends carrying input gears of respective constant-mesh gear trains having output gears at least one of which is limitedly rotatable about the pivot axis on the other member. This one output gear can be limitedly rotated and locked in place in the other member so as torsionally to prestress the rod, thereby eliminating play from the drive by bringing the gears of one of the gear trains into snug contact in one direction and the gears of the other gear train into snug contact in the opposite directions.

  • Patent number: 4376401
Abstract: A flying ram cutoff machine for severing successive lengths of an elongated workpiece continuously moving in the direction of its longitudinal axis employs a bevel gear drive for swinging a ram in synchronization with movement of the workpiece. A motor drive fly wheel and clutch assembly power a drive shaft which extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece, at the rear of the machine. A pair of bevel gears disposed at spaced locations along the drive shaft form power take-offs for transmitting power from the drive shaft to a pair of input shafts which extend perpendicularly away from the drive shaft and toward the swingable ram. A pair of crank assemblies couple the input shafts with the ram to produce swinging movement of the ram upon rotation of the drive shaft. Backlash of the drive system is controlled by interposing a stabilizing spacer between one of the bevel gears and a stationary support.

  • Patent number: 4372176
Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating axial thrust and consequently the need for thrust bearings in parallel shaft and crossed-axis helical drive arrangements is disclosed. According to this invention, a gear with helically cut teeth which maintain a constant profile but have a uniformally tapered top land and bottom land, the top land of which increases in width as the bottom land decreases in width is mounted on a shaft. This tapered tooth helical gear is meshed with a second similar gear mounted in meshing proximity on a second shaft. During operation the axial forces associated with helical gears are resisted by the compressive interfacing, with zero backlash, of the tapered teeth. Thus, the need for thrust bearings is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 4338853
Abstract: A precision power gear train assembly particularly adaptable for use with vehicles having a 360.degree. rotatable turret mounted thereon. The assembly embodies novel spring and stop means to minimize backlash and to limit gear tooth disengagement of the enmeshed output pinion and ring gears of such an assembly. More specifically a pinion-ring gear assembly mounts a gear box to oscillate about an axis parallel to the pinion axis of rotation such that the tooth pressure between pinion and ring gear biases the teeth apart, increasing backlash. A preloaded spring biases the gear teeth into tight mesh to eliminate backlash until the tooth pressure force exceeds a predetermined maximum. Thereafter, further increases in the tooth pressure force separates the teeth by compression of the spring beyond its preloaded compression. A stop limits tooth separation.

A biased helical gear is slidably arranged on the second shaft adjacent the first helical gear, forcing the teeth of the biased gear against corresponding teeth of the double helical gear, automatically removing any clearance between them thus eliminating any backlash therewith, which is desirable for gears driving matched rolls.
