Abstract: A universal motorcycle cruise control system comprised of three elements: control panel, microprocessor based controller and electromechanical drive assembly. The control panel is mounted to allow the vehicle operator access and allows the operator to command the system and receive visual feedback. The controller monitors commands from the control panel, monitors various dynamic signals from the vehicle and controls the drive assembly to maintain requested speed. The electromechanical drive assembly consists of the following: electric motor, gearbox and electro activated clutch. In a preferred configuration, the electromechanical drive assembly is physically installed inside the handlebar under the operators throttle handgrip and is mechanically connected to the handgrip. When activated, the electromechanical drive assembly causes clockwise and counter clockwise rotation of the handgrip as required maintaining requested vehicle speed.

  • Patent number: 7650960
Abstract: A speed limit assembly for a vehicle includes a cam member having varying thickness, a frictional member, and a handle. The frictional member maintains sufficient frictional forces to resist movement of the cam member during ordinary operation of the vehicle. The handle may be manipulated by an operator of the vehicle to overcome the friction created by the frictional member and move the cam member into a desired position. A portion of a speed control handle on the vehicle abuts against the cam member to define an end of the range of motion of the speed control handle. A desired permitted range of motion may be set by moving the a portion of the cam member having a corresponding thickness into the path of the portion of the speed control handle.

  • Patent number: 7021172
Abstract: A hydraulically operated throttle system that has the hydraulic system components installed entirely within the throttle grip on the handlebar. A regular throttle cable is run through the frame/handlebar where it connects to the hydraulic system. A three-piston system is used to provide the control. One piston is connected to a disk cam. As the disk is turned (by turning the twist grip), the cam forces the first piston to move, which forces hydraulic fluid from a first cylinder into a secondary cylinder. This secondary cylinder contains a second piston, which is moved by the fluid from the first cylinder. As this second piston moves, hydraulic fluid moves third piston within a third cylinder. The third piston is attached to the throttle cable. As this piston moves within the third cylinder, it pulls or pushes the throttle cable, thereby opening or closing the throttle on the engine.

It is positioned on the backside of the handlebar and is operated by the thumb. The device has a stop built in that prevents the rider from engaging the throttle at more than half speed using the bar. The rider can increase speed, but only by using the main throttle. This has three beneficial effects. First, it provides a convenient and easy method for riders to operate the throttle without fatigue. Second, it is operated by the thumb, just like the main throttle, thereby preventing confusion in an emergency. Third, it limits the speed the vehicle can operate, no matter how hard the device is gripped. Thus, in a panic situation, gripping the handlebar does not cause any sudden burst of speed.

  • Patent number: 5913943
Abstract: A brake lever assembly device is provided that can be mounted on the handlebars of a bicycle. The brake lever has a rear brake body that is coupled to at least one end of the handlebars and a front brake body that is pivotally connected to the rear brake body. The front brake body is moveable between an idle position in which the brake is not applied, and an engaged position in which the brake is fully applied. The front brake body is biased towards the idle position, so that the brake is not applied when no downward force is applied to the front brake body. Further, the front brake body is mechanically coupled to the bicycle brake so that pivoting the front brake body into the engaged position causes the brake to be fully applied. Still further, the front brake body and the rear brake body are coupled in-line with at least one end of the handlebars so that the rear brake body and the front brake body extend outwardly along a central axis of the end of the handlebars.

  • Patent number: 5370017
Abstract: A handlebar mounted brake control mechanism for a Bowden brake cable or the like includes a handlebar having at least one end, a tubular handle member having first and second ends configured to telescopically slide over one end of the handlebar and being coaxially rotatable thereabout between a relaxed position and a braking position. A handle member biasing mechanism is located on the handlebar for biasing the handle member into the relaxed position, and a handle member guide is used to axially displace the handle member reciprocally between the relaxed position and the braking position. The handle member biasing mechanism is configured such that when the overriding force applied by the user to rotate the handle member into the braking position is released, the handle member biasing mechanism returns the handle member to the relaxed position from the braking position. Additionally, the handle member has an attachment for releasably accommodating an end of the brake cable.
