  • Patent number: 10995859
Abstract: A tunable, thermally actuate, self-sealing grommet for sealing a hole in a vehicle panel through which a steering gearbox protrudes from an engine room to a passenger compartment. The grommet includes a shape memory alloy component embedded in a resin matrix. The shape memory alloy is selectively moveable from a deformed configuration toward a pre-deformed configuration upon being heated to a critical temperature from heat from an initial operation of an engine of the vehicle, which causes a sealing portion of the grommet to move from a non-engagement position to an engagement position such that the sealing portion contacts the panel to form a water-tight seal around the hole.

  • Patent number: 7111696
Abstract: In a legged mobile robot (10) having a motor (42) that rotates the ankle joint (26R (26L)) about a right-and-left axis of the robot (26RY (26LY)) and a speed reducer (58) that reduces speed of an output of the motor, wherein the motor is disposed at a same position as the knee joint (22R (22L)) or at the thigh link (16R (16L)) such that the speed reducer is disposed at the shank link. With this, it becomes possible to reduce the weight of the distal end of the leg (12R (12L)) can be reduced, whereby enabling to reduce the inertial force generated in the leg during movement or locomotion of the robot.

  • Publication number: 20020020243
Abstract: Vibrations of rotary shafts, such as shafts of cutting tools used in high speed machining, are reduced by damping structures in holes in the shafts. The damping structures comprise fingers that are urged outwardly by centrifugal force due to rotation of the shafts and that slide relative to adjacent shaft surfaces due to shaft vibrations, so that vibrational energy is absorbed frictionally. Chatter, a self-excited vibration of a cutting tool, can be substantially reduced in this manner.

  • Patent number: 6290296
Abstract: A chair height control mechanism has a gas cylinder with a valve control finger extending from an upper end overlain by a tilting actuator. A resilient pad is adhered to the upper end of the gas cylinder surrounding the valve control finger and maintains a spacing between the valve control finger and actuator when the actuator is not in use to avoid rattle.

  • Patent number: 5987726
Abstract: An apparatus for compliant positioning of an object during an assembly operation wherein the apparatus includes a base plate, a locator plate for mounting an object such as a clamp or a tool spaced from the base plate and a plurality of linear actuators connected between the base plate the locator plate by universal joints providing six degrees of freedom of movement. A control is connected to the actuators for selectively moving the locator plate to a predetermined position relative to the base plate for contacting a component to be assembled with an object mounted on the locator plate. Two or more of the actuators can be mechanically coupled to move the locator plate with less than six degrees of freedom. The control is responsive to a force applied to the locator plate through the object during assembly of the component for actuating the linear actuators to change the applied force.

  • Patent number: 5366316
Abstract: An intermediate steering shaft assembly for a motor vehicle includes a "counter phased" Cardan joint in the assembly. The "counter phased" Cardan joint includes forming an outer yoke of the Cardan joint with a yoke portion and a separate yoke shaft portion. The yoke portion is connected by a bearing spider to an inner "phased" yoke of the Cardan joint mounted on an end of an intermediate steering shaft and has a center position corresponding to a center position of the intermediate shaft. A connection is formed on the yoke shaft portion so that the latter is mounted on a steering shaft with a unique center position corresponding to the center position of the steering shaft. A splined bore is formed on the yoke portion and a splined end is formed on the yoke shaft portion so that the yoke shaft portion is connectable to the yoke portion in any of a plurality of relative angular positions.

  • Patent number: 4469208
Abstract: A control mechanism for a differential lock having a control pedal isolated from the operating mechanism for engaging the differential. A platform resiliently mounted on the vehicle allows relative movement between the platform and the chassis. A foot operated control element mounted on the platform extends through the platform to a point adjacent an operating mechanism on the vehicle chassis. The operating mechanism selectively operates the differential lock control valve and in its retracted position completely disengages the operating mechanism. The differential lock valve is maintained by a detent in its actuating position and can be released by operating a brake system having a relay valve in the differential lock valve. When the brake system is operated, the relay valve releases the detent means in the differential lock valve allowing the valve to return to its differential release position and the operating mechanism to return to its retracted position.

  • Patent number: 4307623
Abstract: An arrangement for controlling the gearbox of a motor vehicle includes a manually operable control lever and a linkage connecting the lever to a gearbox control shaft projecting from the gearbox casing. In order to prevent unintentional disengagement of a selected gear due to excessive vibrations of the control shaft as the vehicle travels over rough terrain, a damper is provided to damp axial displacements of the control shaft relative to the gearbox casing.
