Abstract: A power-saving driving device for treading the pedals of a bicycle is disclosed. Thereby, the driver may use a smaller force to tread a bicycle so that a higher efficiency is provided. The power-saving device comprises two crank axles. The two crank axles are fixed to a gear box. Two spur gears are engaged to the gear box, and two free wheels are installed at an exterior of the gear box. The two spur gears and two free wheels are connected to the two crank axles. The two free wheels are connected through a chain; and a chain wheel and a bearing are connected to the crank axles. Thereby, the forces from the right and left legs can be outputted effectively. The driving of a bicycle and the power necessary are improved. Therefore, the driver treads the pedals with a smaller depth and thus the physical consumption is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6443033
Abstract: A crankset for a bicycle in which the crankshaft separates into two pieces. The separation point is approximately midway between the support bearings for the crankshaft, creating two crankarm/spindle portions. Dowel pins and a bolt are used to connect the two portions. The crankarm/spindle portions are constructed in a tubular fashion, with the tubular element bent to accommodate the transition from the crank arm to the spindle. Additionally, the crankarm/spindle portions are preferably fabricated from composite materials, to offer a lightweight yet strong and stiff crankset.

  • Patent number: 6398244
Abstract: A propelling scooter includes a chassis, an upright head tube with a handle, a front wheel, and a rear wheel. An elongated pedal is disposed swingably on the chassis. A horizontal transverse first shaft is journalled on the chassis, and is connected fixedly to the pedal, thereby permitting rotation of the pedal about the first shaft. When the pedal is swung, a transmission gearing unit transfers rotation of the first shaft to a driving wheel, which in turn rotates the rear wheel via a flexible endless drive piece. As such, reciprocal rotation of the first shaft is converted into continuous unidirectional rotation of the rear wheel.

  • Patent number: 6367352
Abstract: The crankset with no dead center position includes a single crankshaft (108), fitted with a left crank (11) and a support hub (119) provided with a lever (20). This hub is mounted by a roller bearing (28) in a stationary eccentric member (26) which supports a rotatable chain wheel carrier (15). The hub also supports the right crank (13) via pre-stressed bearings (62, 63). The lever (20) and said crank (13) drive the chain wheel carrier by means of two articulated connecting rods (21 and 23). An indexing ring (30) is provided on the fixed crankset tube (2) to prevent the eccentric member (26) from rotating. These means can include a force sensor allowing a measuring device to calculate the energy and the power transmitted through the crankset. Such a crankset can be used for driving bicycles and other muscle-powered vehicles or machines.

  • Patent number: 6314834
Abstract: A hollow bicycle crank arm 10 is fabricated from first and second components 11, 21 that are affixed at a joint 20 that is distal from the crank spindle mounting boss 12. The joint 20 is at least partially transverse to the long axis of the crank arm 10. Each component 11, 21 has a relatively-solid mounting boss 12, 22 for attaching a crank spindle or a pedal. One, or both components have a tubular portion 15 integral with the mounting boss 12, 22. • Patent number: 6298740
Abstract: An adjustable rotational transmission assembly 10 coupled to and provides adjustment of final drive ratio for a driven device 12, such as a bicycle, moped, motorcycle, vehicle, etc. Transmission assembly 10 adjusts rotation or drive radius and drive circumference to adjust final drive ratio to the driven device 12. Transmission assembly 10 provides infinitely variable drive ratios within a range by adjusting the size of the drive circumference path for movement of drive cable/chain ends. Assembly 10 allows shifting or adjusting of drive ratio with or without requiring any drive rotation of assembly 10. A first example embodiment 14 of the present invention assembly 10 has adjustable transmission crank arms 22. Crank arms 22 are adjusted to retracted and extended positions.

  • Patent number: 6293884
Abstract: This invention comprises a multi-sprocket or cluster gear assembly with a plurality of progressively sized sprockets or gears that are positioned adjacent to each other so as to define an increasing diameter sprocket assembly. Each sprocket comprises a non-circular configuration having at least one long dedendum radius and at least one short dedendum radius, such as an eccentric oval shape. The short radius and the long radius of two adjacent sprockets are aligned and substantially equal in length with each other. The teeth of the sprockets may comprise a chamfer face to better facilitate derailing from one sprocket to the adjacent sprocket. The axial alignment of one sprocket may be retarded by one tooth, relative to the axial alignment of the larger sprocket to better facilitate derailing.

  • Patent number: 6244135
Abstract: The bicycle drive mechanism is intended to emulate the behavior of contemporary multiple sprocket bicycle drive mechanisms while comprising far fewer components. In operation force is transmitted to a first drive sprocket which has the capability to absorb much of the inertial load.
