  • Patent number: 5946859
Abstract: A motion control system controls the linear motion of a safety gate or other object, to prevent its skewing or binding, by two inter-connecting (meshed) gears, which also connect with (are respectively meshed with) two spaced apart, parallel, linear gear racks. The two gears extend between and interconnect the two gear racks, so that all four components are geared together, and have the same gear pitch. This forces the two spaced apart gear racks to track and move in lock-step with one another in a direction of motion aligned with and parallel to the gear racks, thus insuring linear movement of the member being moved (the safety gate here) irrespective of where on the member the moving member is pushed, pulled or otherwise acted on, i.e., even off-center, and without requiring critical edge guide channels, tracks, or the like. In this example a simple solenoid moves the safety gate with consistently low force.

Abstract: A bottom guard for a machine having a plate with a hinged side pivotably attached to a first frame member of a machine and a catch side opposite the hinged side releasably held near a second frame member by a latching device. The plate holds debris from the operation of the machine and serves as a safety guard. The latching device has a first portion attached to the second frame member and a second portion attached to the catch side of the plate. The two portions of the latching device mechanically interlock and a solenoid actuated mechanism releases them upon a remote signal to the solenoid which allows the catch side of the plate to move by gravity, thereby opening the guard and discharging accumulated debris to a side of the machine. At least one shock absorbing device, such as an elastomeric shock cord, a pneumatic cylinder, or a hydraulic cylinder limits the amount that the plate will swing open when the catch is released and cushions the plate as it falls open.

  • Patent number: 5807043
Abstract: A machine tool way cover to provide protection to a moveable machine tool which is provided with an interlocking feature to prevent misalignment or skewing of the actual way cover. The present invention provides a dramatic improvement over prior art machine tool coverings and way covers in that it eliminates the need for individual segments of the machine tool way cover to be manufactured to extremely tight physical tolerances by providing interlocking channels at the base of each way cover segment. The channels provide grooves within which the channels of smaller segments actually move as the machine tool and machine tool way cover move in and out. By providing such an interlocking mechanism, the machine tool way cover avoids becoming misaligned and inoperative even when objects or personnel impart substantial loads to the way cover.

  • Patent number: 5137096
Abstract: A flexible metal dust boot, comprising a bellows, and a surrounding protective shroud capable of withstanding high temperatures. The boot and shroud are mounted on a support plate, which can be conveniently attached to the body of a reciprocatable hydraulic or pneumatic hammer. The boot and shroud extend from the bottom of the hammer body, in surrounding relationship to the tool. The support plate forms a seal against the bottom surface of the hammer body. The bellows is attached to the plate at one end, and to the tool, in fluid tight relationship, at the other end. An air fitting in the bellows structure facilitates connection to a pressurized air source to inhibit the entry of particulate matter as well as fluids in the hammer is submerged in use. During hammer operation, the bellows reciprocates with the tool. The shroud surrounds the bellows and extends the axial length of the bellows to shield the bellows from particulate matter generated during operation of the hammer.
