Patent number: 5643131Abstract: The invention concerns a continuously variable transmission having a driving and a driven shaft (1, 9) and first and second intermediate shafts (10, 11). Power is transmitted to the driven shaft (9) through a transmission variometer with i.sup.2 arrangement. According to the invention, the input power of the transmission is transmitted to the driven shaft through a transmission branch with constant ratio and through the continuously variable transmission branch. This power distribution reduces the proportion of the power transmitted through the continuously variable transmission branch. The transmission efficiency of the whole transmission may, in particular, be thus improved. This continuously variable transmission is designed for use in private cars and light utility vehicles.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1995Date of Patent: July 1, 1997Assignee: ZF Friedrichshafen AGInventors: Walter Kuhn, Hartmut Herter

Patent number: 5213551Abstract: A transmission (1) has an input (2) connected to an engine (3). At a speed above idling, a centrifugal clutch (9) connects the engine to a pump (8) of a torque converter (7) and also to a sun gear (14) of a planetary gear train (13). A turbine (11) of the torque converter is connected to a ring gear (16) of the planetary gear train, and a planet carrier (18) is connected to an output (4) of the transmission. A free wheel (22) mounted between the ring gear and a stationary housing prevents reverse rotation of the ring gear. At low engine speeds, the power passes via the sun and planet gears through the planet carrier to the output, while reaction torque exerted by the planet gears on the ring gear is greater than forward torque transmitted through the torque converter, so that the ring gear is held stationary by the free wheel. In this condition, the planetary gear train acts as a mechanical speed reducer.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1991Date of Patent: May 25, 1993Assignee: Mat Holdings B.V.Inventor: Roumen A. Antonov

Patent number: 5181431Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for automatic shifting of a multi-path, toothed-wheel gear change box with at least two gearbox subunits in parallel to one another in the power transmission path between an input shaft and an output shaft and having loose wheels which can be coupled to their shaft in each case by a gearwheel clutch. A starting shift condition is selected if the vehicle is at a standstill, in which condition both the gearwheel clutch connected to the loose wheel of the gearwheel stage of the reverse gear and the gearwheel clutch of that gearwheel stage which forms the lowest of the gears, which are independent of the power-shift clutch of the gearbox subunit with the gearwheel stage of the reverse gear, are engaged.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1991Date of Patent: January 26, 1993Assignee: Mercedes-Benz AGInventors: Wolfgang Zaiser, Hans Merkle, Gerhard Wagner, Gerhard Spengler

Patent number: 4858491Abstract: A mechanical actuator assembly which automatically releases the load controlled by the actuator when the actuator jams or otherwise fails. The actuator assembly has two kinetic energy sources, the outputs of which are normally summed for application to the load. A monitoring device monitors the two kinetic energy outputs. When the relationship between those outputs deviates substantially from a predetermined relationship, the load is disconnected from the actuator assembly.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1988Date of Patent: August 22, 1989Assignee: Plessey IncorporatedInventor: Eugene E. Patent number: 4644819Abstract: High-low speed drive system includes a main drive shaft which may be selectively driven off one or the other of a pair of continuously driven high and low speed shafts by selective engagement and disengagement of associated pneumatic operated disc clutches. Such clutches have fast response times, and the clutch associated with the low speed shaft acts as a brake when engaged to rapidly decelerate the main drive shaft down to the speed of the low speed shaft. The timing of both the high speed and low speed pneumatic operated disc clutches are closely controlled so that the low speed clutch is engaged practically instantaneously with the disengagement of the high speed clutch. The clutches are located in substantial radial alignment with each other in close proximity to the gear train between the high and low speed shafts and main drive shaft within the main housing for ease of maintenance and simplified porting of fluid through lines on the same path to all of the clutches.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Leggett & Platt IncorporatedInventor: Martin J. Patent number: 4250985Abstract: A power transmission system comprises a synchronous main toothed clutch 20 and a subsidiary toothed clutch 21 arranged in parallel in main and subsidiary power paths 6, 7 respectively between an input shaft 1 and an output shaft 2. When the main clutch 20 is engaged this causes engagement of the subsidiary clutch 21. The main power path 6 has a torsional stiffness which is substantially less than that of the subsidiary power path 7 over at least an initial part of the range of torque loading between zero and full power, such that at full power or at a pre-determined proportion of full power the main power path 6 and the subsidiary power path 7 transmit substantially the same load.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1978Date of Patent: February 17, 1981Assignee: S.S.S. Patent number: 4229991Abstract: A cone drive, high output speed reducer, having a low clearance for low profile applications. An input shaft drives a helical idler pinion which in turn drives two other helical idler pinions. The two other idler pinions are each mounted on a separate shaft carrying a cone drive worm. The two worm shafts turn in unison, and the worms are each meshed with a separate worm gear. The two worm gears are operatively mounted on an output shaft. One of the helical idler pinions is provided with an adjustment means for equalizing the load sharing. That is, to provide equal loads on each of the helical pinions for load sharing throughout the twin drive gearing units of the speed reducer. The speed reducer may be provided with either an air cooling system or a water cooling system.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1978Date of Patent: October 28, 1980Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventors: Walter H. Patent number: 3964345Abstract: A hollow vertical housing contains vertical output shaft and gearing. A rotatable handle disposed on the outside of the housing, when rotated, by means of the gearing causes the shaft to rotate at such higher speed. Cutter blades in a hollow container which is sealable by removable lid can be rotated by the shaft to produce the desired blender action. Flywheel means causes the shaft to continue to rotate at essentially constant speed as new material is added for blending. In addition continued rotation of the shaft enables a quick release mechanism to disengage.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1975Date of Patent: June 22, 1976Assignee: The Raymond Lee Organization, Inc.Inventor: Jacob J.
