Patent number: 8138391Abstract: The cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) Or gene is a semi-dominant, single-locus mutation. It induces the accumulation of high levels of beta-carotene in various tissues that are normally devoid of carotenoids, turning them orange. Using a map-based cloning strategy, we identified a single candidate gene representing Or and successfully verified its identity by phenotypic complementation in the wild type cauliflower. The Or gene encodes a plastid membrane protein containing the DnaJ zinc figure domain. A likely gain-of-function mutation from a 4.3-kb retrotransposon insertion in the Or allele confers the orange phenotype in the mutant. Southern blot analysis revealed that Or is a single-copy sequence in the cauliflower genome. High level of expression of the Or gene and the protein was found in very young leaves, curds, and flowers at comparable abundance between wild type and the Or mutant.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 2005Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignees: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture, Boyce Thompson Institute Inc., Cornell UniversityInventors: Li Li, David F. Publication number: 20120017333Abstract: The present invention relates to plant cells and plants, which are genetically modified, whereby the genetic modification leads to an increase in the activity of a starch-phosphorylating OK1 protein in comparison to the corresponding wild type plant cells or wild type plants that have not been genetically modified. In addition, the present invention concerns means and methods for the manufacture of such plant cells and plants. These types of plant cells and plants synthesise a modified starch. Therefore, the present invention also concerns the starches synthesised from the plant cells and plants according to the invention, methods for manufacturing these starches, and the manufacture of starch derivatives of these modified starches, as well as flours containing starches according to the invention. Furthermore, the present invention also relates to nucleic acids, coding starch-phosphorylating OK1 proteins, vectors, host cells, plant cells, and plants containing such nucleic acid molecules.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2011Publication date: January 19, 2012Applicant: BAYER CROPSCIENCE AGInventors: CLAUS FROHBERG, OLIVER KOETTING, GERHARD RITTE, MARTIN STEUP

Patent number: 8097769Abstract: A transgenic crop plant transformed by a 1-AminoCyclopropane-1-Carboxylate Deaminase-like Polypeptide (ACCDP) coding nucleic acid, wherein expression of the nucleic acid sequence in the crop plant results in the plant's increased root growth, and/or increased yield, and/or increased tolerance to environmental stress as compared to a wild type variety of the plant. Also provided are agricultural products, including seeds, produced by the transgenic crop plants. Also provided are isolated novel ACCDPs, and isolated novel nucleic acids encoding ACCDPs, and vectors and transgenic plant containing the same.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2006Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: BASF Plant Science GmbHInventors: Rodrigo Sarria-Millan, Eric R.
