Due to the lack of any automatic safety release mechanisms, such tools currently on market suffer the disadvantage of requiring constant monitoring in case fire rekindles. The shut-off tool comprising a pair of adjustable clamping arms and an actuator assembly for adjusting and fixing the clamping arms addresses the safety issue by integrating a fusible link locking tab into the actuator assembly. The presence of a nearby fire melts and separates the locking tab thereby releasing the clamping arms from an activated fire sprinkler head. The two axis movement is driven by a single application of force by the user and may transmitted from one jaw to the next by a system of ramps and wedges or other transmission means capable of maintaining the correct ratio of movement so as to maintain the geometric relationship of the jaws. • Patent number: 6418819
Abstract: A wrench includes a handle, a first jaw block pivotally connected a head of the handle, a second jaw block movably connected to the first jaw block to define a variable clamp space between them, and a rotating unit mounted on the first jaw block for adjusting an openness of the clamp space. When using the wrench to tighten or loosen a hex bolt to a certain degree, a user needs only to pull the handle in a direction opposite to that in which a force is applied on the handle to tighten or loosen the hex bolt, so that the clamp space on the first jaw block is caused to instantaneously slip and turn relative to the clamped hex bolt, allowing the user to apply a force on the handle again without the need of repeatedly removing and replacing the wrench from and onto the hex bolt.

  • Patent number: 6227079
Abstract: A tool includes a head having a fixed jaw, a movable jaw slidably engaged in the head and movable toward and away from the fixed jaw for clamping the fastener to be driven. A handle has a portion pivotally secured to the head at a pivot shaft and has an actuation portion selectively engaged with the head via gears and a pinion to force the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw and to drive the fastener. A pin is slidably engaged in the handle for limiting a rotational movement between the handle and the head. A spring may bias the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw.

  • Patent number: 6131491
Abstract: A self-locking wrench includes a movable jaw which can be moved by a manual actuator. Motion of the actuator is transmitted to the movable jaw by a leaf spring. When moving the movable jaw toward an open position, the leaf spring becomes deformed and stores energy so as to be able to subsequently drive the movable jaw toward a closed position when the actuator is released.

  • Patent number: 5568752
Abstract: This specification discloses an adjustable spanner that has a handle provided with a first jaw at one end. A lever is pivotally connected to the handle and has coupled at one end a second jaw. The jaw is coupled to the lever by a link. The link is pivotally connected at one end to the second jaw and pivotally connected at another end to the lever. A cam is carried in slot formed in link. An elongate slot is cut in a head portion of the handle. As the lever is pivoted with respect to the handle the cam rides in slot and the jaws and move linearly with respect to each other. The cam and slot cooperate to form a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism has a free state corresponding to the cam being disengaged from the slot in which the jaws are able to move relative to each other and the locking state in which the cam engages the slot whereby the jaws are locked against movement away from each other.

  • Patent number: 5528965
Abstract: A toggle wrench has a first jaw fixed to a handle, a sliding jaw slidable toward and away from the fixed jaw and a leaf spring therebetween. The jaws have parallel pressure surfaces disposed at an angle of 30 degrees with respect to the elongation of the handle. A link is pivotally attached to the sliding jaw and to a carrier. The carrier is positioned along the handle by a manually controllable threaded adjustment assembly mounted on the rearward end of the handle. A lever is pivotally attached to the carrier rearwardly of the link. Movement of the rearward end of the link toward the fixed jaw side of the handle causes forward movement of the link for toggle-pressing the sliding jaw toward the fixed jaw. The carrier holds the lever and link in alignment with the handle.
