Abstract: The automatically adjusting gripping device grips a workpiece ever more tightly as greater torque is applied thereto. The device has a base plate having a linear guide slot or series of radial guide slots, with a pair of jaws residing in each slot. A torque application component rotates relative to the base plate, and has a cam track of varying diameter in which the heads of the jaws ride. Rotation of the torque application component and cam track relative to the base plate causes the jaw heads to slide along the track due to the jaws being captured within the base plate slot, thereby changing the span between jaws as the cam track diameter varies at the jaw head locations. The gripping device is useful as an adjustable wrench but may be applied to other environments as well, e.g., as an automatic gripping and releasing device in conveyor systems, etc.

The main body is fabricated of hardened sheet metal formed from laminations. The adjustable wrench has a pin/slot guide mechanism to retain and provide position adjustment for an adjustable jaw. A locking mechanism allows the adjustable jaw to ratchet over the corners of a fastener being tightened. In a locked position, the wrench operates like a standard adjustable wrench. Moving a trigger to an unlocked position allows the worm gear mechanism to shift axially for additional travel. The movable jaw engaged to the worm gear is thereby also allowed to shift position so that the adjustable jaw wrench can rotate over the points of the fastener being torqued.

  • Patent number: 4884480
Abstract: An adjustable socket provides continuous sizing from a minimum opening to a maximum opening to accommodate differently sized nut structures. The socket includes a socket body having a head portion and a pair of longitudinal wing portions separated by a channel region defined by a slideway region and a keyway region. A pair of jaw members are provided, each having a slide element received in the keyway region for transverse reciprocal movement and a jaw element projecting longitudinally of its slide element and received in the slideway region. When mounted, the jaw elements have facing interior work faces and oppositely facing, exterior cam surfaces. The wing portions are externally threaded and threadably receive a collar. Biasing springs apply restorative force tending to separate the jaw elements to open the region between the work faces.

  • Patent number: 4846026
Abstract: A tool for inserting rubber tire repair plugs into an injury or a hole of a vehicle tire is disclosed which is an improvement of the invention disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,714,851. The improvements on the previously issued U.S. Patent consist of a y-shaped eye at the end of the needle, a plurality of notches and a handle so that needle changing is avoided. Additionally, a protrusion is used to abut the opposite end of a plug from that which is being inserted into the tire to prevent its movement and to further assist in asserting into the injury in the tire.

  • Patent number: 4802388
Abstract: A plug and tool are provided for repairing and sealing a puncture of a tire. The plug is generally cylindrical in shape and is made from a rubber-like material which is stiffer and more durable than prior repair plugs. The plug has a cylindrical shank portion and adjoining circular head portion. Extending around the outer edge of the head portion is a thin auxiliary sealing ring. On the periphery of the shank portion is a plurality of closely spaced sealing rings with grooves therebetween. When the shank portion is forcibly inserted into a puncture, the sealing rings provide multiple sealing members by individually radially compressing and locally conforming to the size and shape of the puncture. Additional sealing is provided by bonding the head portion to the inner surface of the tire. At the end portion of the plug opposite to the head portion is a metal loop. There is provided a tool having a handle portion and adjoining slender shank portion for forcibly inserting the plug into a puncture.

  • Patent number: 4716792
Abstract: A simple and economical tire repair tool, providing an open-ended support tube which carries in the free end a plug member axially of the tube for sealing the hole. The plug member is provided on its forward end with a hard-material pointed member for penetration of the casing, and that pointed member has an abutment against which the free end of the support tube presses during use, forcing the pointed end and a plug body connected thereto to penetrate the tire casing, without need of enlarging the hole, and with the tube holding the casing walls away from the plug body. Interengaging lugs of the tube and the pointed end member provide for twisting the pointed member to facilitate passage of the pointed member into the casing, but permit simple axial retraction of the tube to draw it out of the casing, yet the resilience of the casing in the hole region causes the casing walls to firmly embrace the plug member, sealing the hole.

  • Patent number: 4710249
Abstract: A method and closure are provided for sealing and repairing a puncture of a tire. The closure is a resilient plug of a rubber-like material stiffer and more durable than prior closures having a generally cylindrical shank portion and an adjoining circular head portion. The periphery of the shank portion has a labyrinth of closely spaced sealing rings and grooves therebetween. When the shank portion is forcibly engaged with a puncture, the sealing rings individually radially compress and locally conform to the size and shape of the puncture thereby providing multiple sealing members with the puncture. Additional sealing is provided by an auxiliary sealing ring on the head portion of the closure which is adhesively bonded to the inner surface of the tire, adjacent to the puncture. Tool attaching means are provided on the closure for forcibly engaging the closure with the puncture.

  • Patent number: 4548102
Abstract: A tool tip is inserted from the inside of the tire into a hole in a tire crown by turning the tool tip as it is pressed against the tire. The tool tip is mounted on a hollow tool having a cylindrical insert receiving chamber. An insert is pushed by a plunger out of the receiving chamber in the hollow tool through a tapered portion into a compression chamber in the tool tip. The compression chamber has a diameter smaller than the diameter of the insert so that when the insert is ejected from the hollow tool it will expand to fill the hole in the tire. The insert is also tapered to engage the tapered portion between the receiving and compression chambers. The plunger has a plunger head with a substantially flat pushing surface and knurled edges which the operator can manually grip and push.

  • Patent number: 4472986
Abstract: A lever locking worm adjustable wrench includes a handle terminating in a fixed jaw, a movable jaw slidably received in the handle in opposing relation to the fixed jaw, and rack gear teeth formed on the movable jaw. A worm mounting arm has a worm gear rotatably mounted thereon and is pivotally mounted on the handle to move the worm gear in a direction substantially tangential to the direction of the rack. An operating lever is pivotally connected to the worm mounting arm and is connected by a toggle link to the handle. Upon movement of the lever toward the handle, the movable jaw is moved toward the fixed jaw to grippingly engage a workpiece, such as a nut or bolt head therebetween. The toggle link, operating lever, and handle cooperate to define an over-center locking mechanism whereby the movable jaw is releasably locked in gripping engagement with the workpiece against the fixed jaw.

  • Patent number: 4341382
Abstract: The invention comprises a pin shaped repair plug for sealing the bladder valve of an inflatable ball such as a football, soccer ball, basketball, etc. The plug is inserted and removed with a special tool. The plug is retained substantially inside the bladder valve with little or no protrusion from the exterior surface of the valve and ball. The plug grips the inside wall of the valve passage frictionally. The gripping action is sufficient to prevent dislodgment of the plug despite the most demanding use of the ball. As an example, the plug was tested for a full season of practice including punting by a college level football team. The plug is substantially cylindrical in shape with either an externally or an internally threaded head integrally formed thereon. The tool for inserting and removing the plug from the bladder valve includes either a complementary internally threaded or externally threaded end attachable to the plug head.

The head has a higher modulus of extension than the tail and is adapted for engagement by a repair tool. The head may have a hole adjacent the free end thereof in which a member of a repair tool is received to allow insertion of the plug in a puncture hole without folding back on itself.Preferably the head is tapered in the direction leading towards the free end thereof and is made of a rubber composition the hardness of which exceeds that of the tail thereby further facilitating insertion.
