Patent number: 6792831Abstract: The tools (wrenches) of this invention provide a one color instant identification of color coded tools. Preferably, the tools have a portion of their outer surface colored. Typically, the color impregnates the metal or plating during the manufacturing process. Another embodiment is a colored applique, band or sleeve on the outer surface of the tools. The key of this coloring is to identify the tool quickly by coloring a large area of the tool. This provides for quick identification of the tool even if the numerical designations are illegible because of small sizing or dirt obliteration. In a preferred embodiment, virtually the entire tool is colored during manufacturing. In another preferred embodiment, large raised numbers combine with the overall color scheme to make the tools quickly identifiable. Dirting the large colored surface is very unlikely as is obliterating the large raised fractional numbers.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2002Date of Patent: September 21, 2004Inventor: Larry G. Patent number: 6748826Abstract: A slide switch adjustable wrench uses a laminated steel construction method that includes a stepped surface to form a guide for the worm gear driven moving jaw. A molded or similarly formed body is sandwiched between the steel housing sides to form a sturdy structure. The body provides cavities, bearings and other features to support and guide moving parts within. A rack and pinion drive system uses simple molded gears to amplify about 2 inches of switch travel into about 6 turns of the worm gear. An overmolded rubber edge grip bonds to the body to create a recess in the body; this recess seamlessly fits the steel sides to form a smooth continuously contoured grip surface.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2002Date of Patent: June 15, 2004Assignee: Work Tools, Inc.Inventor: Joel Marks

Patent number: 6000301Abstract: An adjustable wrench utilizes a drive member housed in a wrench body. The drive member has a cylindrical drive element having external male threads formed thereon, onto which a guide block is mounted by means of a bore, within which female threads, complementary to the male threads, are formed extending longitudinally through the guide block, so that the drive element extends through the bore with the male and female threads in engagement with one another, whereby rotation of the drive element is operable to move the guide block longitudinally along the drive element. A drive knob is fixed to and manually operable for selectively rotating the drive element. A pair of alignment arms connect a movable jaw element to the guide block so that the movable jaw element faces and is displaced from the drive block in longitudinal alignment with the bore and is separated from the drive knob by the drive block.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1998Date of Patent: December 14, 1999Assignee: Alltrade Inc.Inventor: George Hillinger

Patent number: 5771761Abstract: A wrench includes a fixed jaw (16) at one end of a handle (15) and a pivoted jaw (19) joined to the handle by a pivot (20) disposed in a plane (30). A spring (25) urges the pivoted jaw through a gripping position in which flat gripping surfaces (17, 18) are parallel and separated by a distance which equals the size of the bolthead or nut to be turned. The plane (30) extends through the proximal edges of the surfaces (17, 18) which are flat from the plane to the distal edges of the jaws, and perpendicular to the plane. An auxiliary lever (45) assists in ratcheting. The wrenches may be single ended, double ended, or adjustable, in which case, an integral pivot bar (50) slides within the wrench handle perpendicular to the gripping surfaces (17, 18). A plurality of springs (25b, 25c) may be used.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1996Date of Patent: June 30, 1998Inventor: Kazimierz M. Binkowski

Patent number: 4753141Abstract: An adjustable wrench having a fixed jaw and a spring biased movable jaw. A coil spring acts on an end of a worm gear opposite the fixed jaw, which, in turn, acts on a rack of teeth provided on a portion of the movable jaw to force the movable jaw towards the fixed jaw. The worm gear is rotated to advance the movable jaw against an object which is to be gripped. Upon contact of both the movable jaw and the fixed jaw with the object, the worm gear is rotated further to compress the coil spring. The force of the coil spring against the worm gear diminishes looseness between the worm gear and the movable jaw, and compression of the coil spring further diminishes any such looseness and enhances holding power of the wrench about the object.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1987Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Inventors: James N. Hamrick, James N. Hamrick, Jr.

Patent number: 4151764Abstract: On a conventional pipe wrench, an L-shaped lever arm has the short bisected arm segment cooperatively disposed over and secured by a fixed pivot to a linear extention of the threaded section of the adjustable pipe jaw. A free pivot disposed at the terminus of the bisected arm secures a roller between and in the short bisected arm segment. The L-shaped lever arm and pivoted roller are adaptively sized and shaped to provide a lock means for the pipe jaw when the lever handle is pressed down against the pipe wrench handle, locking the roller against the wrench handle by compressing the roller in detent against the wrench handle.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1978Date of Patent: May 1, 1979Inventor: Lorne Bunn
