Abstract: An apparatus is provided for removing a childproof cap from a container having a locking mechanism. The apparatus comprises a cap engaging assembly wherein a first portion is urged toward a second portion that applies a force against the childproof cap when the container is maintained in a fixed position. The cap engaging assembly further comprises a actuating mechanism, such as a caming mechanism, that is configured such that as the first portion is urged toward the second portion, the cap is initially depressed in a linear direction until the actuating mechanism is engaged, whereby the second portion is rotated slightly relative to the first portion so that the childproof cap is also rotated and becomes disengaged from the locking mechanism of the container.

  • Patent number: 7500647
Abstract: One of the greatest frustrations in the kitchen for a person with limited hand mobility is the task of holding the body of a jar while removing the lid. The present invention solves this problem by allowing the handicapped person's body to become the third hand and hold the bottle in a rigid grip. The new device clips over the front of any standard kitchen drawer and traps the jar between a V shaped vertical support and the front of the counter top. The jar is held rigid when the user presses their body against the drawer. Now both hands are free to remove the jar lid by any common means.

  • Publication number: 20090007730
Abstract: An apparatus for removing earrings from a display card includes a pronged mechanism for slipping between the ornamental portion of the earring and the card. A user applies leverage to the pronged mechanism to separate the earring from the card. The pronged mechanism can be enhanced with a cover for preventing the earring from flipping away as it is removed from the card. The cover can be attached to the pronged portion by any suitable means, such as a band, adhesive, hinge, or other means. When the pronged mechanism removes the earring from the card, the earring retainer on the back of the earring necessarily also separates from the card, so the device can be further enhanced with a cup means for catching and containing the earring retainer. The apparatus can be a single, integrated device.

  • Patent number: 6862960
Abstract: A device for loosening threaded lids from correspondingly threaded containers, comprising a body carrying first and second flexible belts (20, 26) forming first and second loops which engage around the lid and the container respectively, the belts (20, 26) being arranged to be relatively displaceable such that the first and second loops grip the lid and the container respectively, the belts further being arranged to be displaceable by an actuating means such that the first and second loops apply oppositely directed torques to the lid and container respectively whereby the lid is rotated on the container in a loosening direction. Both the lid and the container are thus gripped by the device rather than by hand. The loosening of the lid may be achieved by the rotation of only one of the loops relative to the body, the other loop serving to prevent rotation of the lid or the container relative to the body. Alternatively, both of the loops may rotate relative to the body in opposite directions.

  • Patent number: 6651531
Abstract: An automated pill bottle opener that is initiated by the user placing the bottle to be opened on a lower gripping surface that is affixed to a casing of the device. The user then moves a selector to choose the opening operation. A plunger assembly drives a plunger downward until a top gripping surface of a rotator assembly presses on the top of the bottle cap. After the pill bottle cap is opened, a pressure sensitive triggering device reverses the direction of travel of the plunger so that the plunger is again raised to its original position. To reseal a bottle, the user simply places the bottle on the lower gripping surface with the cap positioned on the top of the bottle. The user then moves the selector to choose the closing process. The plunger action of the device is identical, but the direction of rotation of the rotator is reversed so that the cap is screwed back onto the bottle.

  • Patent number: 6553870
Abstract: This container holder is a vertical structure with its lower extremity fixedly attachable to a sink drain opening, and its upper extremity capable of receiving and clamping the container whose lid is to be manipulated. At the holder bottom, parallel connected fixed and pivoting partial cylindrical sections are placed in the sink drain opening. The user rotates a cam lever to swing out the pivoting section until the holder is firmly fixed in the sink drain. The top of the holder has a platform on which the container is placed. A screw mechanism actuated by a crank handle converges two clamping jaws around the container to fix it in place. Advantages include use of minimum force for both sink attachment and container clamping, and normal sink function with the holder in place.
