Patent number: 11779385Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from its distal end. Each jaw member is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. A knife channel is configured to reciprocate a cutting mechanism therealong. An actuator selectively advances the cutting mechanism. A switch is disposed on the first shaft and is configured to be depressed between a first position and at least one subsequent position upon biasing engagement with a mechanical interface disposed on the second shaft. The first position of the switch relays information to the user corresponding to a desired pressure on tissue and the at least one subsequent position is configured to activate the source of electrosurgical energy to supply electrosurgical energy to the jaw members.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2021Date of Patent: October 10, 2023Assignee: Covidien LPInventors: Ryan C. Patent number: 9017372Abstract: A forceps includes first and second shafts, each having a jaw member disposed at a distal end thereof. At least one jaw member is moveable from an open to a closed position for grasping tissue therebetween. At least one jaw member is configured for reciprocation of a blade therethrough. A trigger assembly includes a trigger and at least one linkage coupled to the trigger and to the blade such that rotation of the trigger translates the blade between the retracted and the extended position. An interference member moveable between a locked position and an unlocked position is also provided. The interference member is configured to engage the linkage(s) when in the locked position to inhibit translation of the blade from the retracted to the extended position.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2010Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Covidien LPInventors: Ryan C. Artale, Thomas Meiser, William J. Dickhans, Steven E. Butcher, Dennis W. Butcher

Patent number: 8882800Abstract: A medical instrument with a shank consisting of pivotable jaw parts and a handle, the two jaw parts of the tool are pivotable relative to each other independently via the handle and each of the pivotable jaw parts is actuated via a separate drive. One drive is designed as a grip part mounted pivotably on the handle and is connected to one jaw part via a first push/pull element mounted in an axially displaceable manner in the shank, and the other drive is an adjusting wheel rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the shank and is connected to the other jaw part of the tool via a second push/pull element mounted in an axially displaceable manner in the shank. The push/pull element is designed as a push/pull rod, and the push/pull element which is coupled to the adjusting wheel is designed as a push/pull tube coaxially surrounding the push/pull rod.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2012Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: University of DundeeInventor: Timothy Graham Frank

Patent number: 4982630Abstract: In a pliers-type tool with a fixed jaw carrier (13A) and a movable jaw carrier (13B) arranged on a pivotable rocker (14) which is connected with an at least to a limited degree resiliently bendable bracket (15). The rocker (14) is with the aid of a pivot pin (14A) pivotally attached to a longitudinal tool body (11), the pivot pin (14A) passing through the rocker (14) in a hole which is larger than the diameter of the pivot pin (14A), and is anchored on one end of a short link (17), the other end of which link is attached to the said bracket (17).Thus work pieces, having a size within certain limits, may be precisely treated.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1989Date of Patent: January 8, 1991Assignee: C.
