  • Patent number: 4721022
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved wrenching tool which utilizes readily removable key member that is axially restrained in a key holder of the tool member by a detent ball and that can be released from the tool by precisely aligning the key holder to the outer, rotationally driven socket member of the tool. This invention comprises a release mechanism to locate the key holder in the tool at the precise position where the detent ball is aligned with a ball cavity in the outer socket member, thus permitting lateral displacement of the detent ball, and releasing the central key member. Preferably the key release includes a knob on a shaft which extends through a sidewall of the tool housing and which internally supports a cam that is received in a cam guide on an axially sliding block which is secured in a subassembly to the key holder.

  • Patent number: 4617844
Abstract: There is disclosed a removable torque-transmitting body, such as a key and methods for securing the key in, and releasing it from, a power assisted wrenching tool for the attachment of fasteners, particularly frangible fasteners, in loose and interference fit applications. The key has a main shaft portion with a distal, torque-transmitting head at one end, and an opposite end of reduced thickness and non-circular cross section, with a transverse groove therebetween. The wrenching tool has a subassembly of an outer socket member and an elongated key holder slidably mounted therein, under spring resistance, with a ball detent mounted in a cross bore in the key holder. The reduced thickness end of the key is inserted into the receiving keyway of the holder, and an axial force can be applied to seat the key, with the detent ball received in its transverse groove.

  • Patent number: 4538483
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved power assisted wrenching tool for the attachment of fasteners in loose and interference fit applications, and particularly for use with frangible fasteners. The improvement comprises a readily removable key which is used to immobilize the bolt during attachment of a threaded fastener, typically in a loose fit application. The key is retained in a wrenching tool assembly by a detent ball which is positively locked in the center core of the holder member of the wrenching tool and can only be disengaged by the axial alignment of the holder and the socket drive members of this assembly. The tool is thus easily adaptable for the application of fasteners in either loose or interference fit applications.

  • Patent number: 4526067
Abstract: An automatic mounting appliance for assembling clamp pins, screws, nuts and the like is adapted to be installed on a machine driven into rotation by a motor. The appliance comprises coaxial elements i.e. a holding member for receiving a portion of the pins, screws, or nuts terminated at one end by a socket, a gripping member having angular shift with respect to the holding member and terminated at one end by a socket axially adjacent to the first mentioned socket, both sockets being in coincidence only in one of two end positions, a rotary member driven by the motor, a stationary member, and a driving member radially interposed between the rotary and gripping members to frictionally drive the gripping member from the rotary member, whereby the angular shift permits locking or unlocking of the pins, screws, or nuts depending on the direction of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4472985
Abstract: A power-driven bolt fastening tool or shearing wrench includes an outer socket adapted to fit over the head of a bolt to be fastened and an inner socket disposed coaxially in the outer socket and adapted to fit over the tip of the bolt. A planetary gear mechanism comprises an internal gear coupled to the outer socket through a lost-motion connection, planet gears supported on shafts coupled to the inner socket, and a sun gear in mesh with the planet gears. The lost-motion connection comprises a torsion spring acting between the internal gear and the outer socket for allowing the internal gear to angularly move for a limited angular interval before the outer and inner sockets fit fully over the bolt head and tip and before a fastening torque is transmitted from the sun gear to the outer socket.

  • Patent number: 4462281
Abstract: A customized, substantially standard power wrench is disclosed which has been modified to provide bolt holding capability. The housing is machined to provide a cylindrical opening and an internal, shallow, oval-shaped recess. An adapter assembly includes an adapter ring projecting through the housing opening formed with an oval-shaped flange axially positioning the adapter ring and preventing relative rotation between the adapter ring and the main housing of the wrench. A bit rod extends longitudinally through the wrench to the drive end and is biased toward the drive end by a spring located in a spring housing threaded onto the adapter ring. The simple mounting of the bit rod and adapter ring minimizes the conversion cost of the tool to render it capable of bolt holding operation.

  • Patent number: 4289049
Abstract: An improved power tool is utilized to tighten a connection between internally and externally threaded fastener elements. The power tool includes a motor which drives a socket which engages the internally threaded fastener element, such as a nut. A retainer rod extends through a central passage in a socket drive member to engage an exposed end of an externally threaded member, such as a bolt. An assembly is provided to hold the retainer rod against rotation with the socket and to apply an axially directed force to the retainer rod to urge it into engagement with the bolt. This assembly includes a piston which is releasably connected with the retainer rod and is spring biased toward one end of a chamber. As the nut is tightened onto the bolt, the piston is retracted into the chamber against the influence of the spring.

  • Patent number: 3942398
Abstract: A gear head wrench particularly suited for use in applying torque to bolts without transferring torsional stresses to bolt-receiving structures. The wrench is characterized by a coupling including a socket, for connecting a bolt head with a torque multiplying gear-train, provided within a housing having an annulus concentrically related to the socket and adapted to be coupled with a spacer interposed between the bolt head and the juxtaposed surface of the bolt-receiving structure for applying a balancing counter-torque to the spacer as torque is applied to the bolt head whereby the bolt-receiving structure is substantially isolated from torsional stress. As a result of the foregoing, the operator of the wrench is substantially isolated from any forces which may be imposed.
