  • Patent number: 5072636
Abstract: The slide 14 carries a support 18 for a plurality of tools, which is secured to a sleeve 34 rotatable and axially slidable on a body 38. The slide 14 carries a series of hydrostatic bearings 36, 39 and 87 to guide rotatably the sleeve 34 and axially the body 38. The sleeve 34 is antulrly tied to the body 38 through a normally closed front clutch 42, 43, which is opened by axially displacing the sleeve 34 with respect to the body 38, through a hydraulic device 44, 47. A reversible electric motor 52 is operated for rotating the sleeve 34 to select the tool, and may be numerically controlled for continuously displacing the tool during a working operation.

  • Patent number: 5067371
Abstract: For controlling the locking of the rotatable tool holder of a tool turret, the angular position of the tool holder is determined by a rotating transmitter. The rotating transmitter is rotated corresponding to the rotary movement of a control and synchronization device. Digital signals are produced with the aid of the rotating transmitter. Each digital signal is associated with one angular position of those which may be selected. With each of these signals, the indicator is changed in those two angular positions of the control and synchronization device for locking and unlocking of the tool holder at each of its angular positions. The indicator is changed by the rotary movement of the device in one or the other direction out of the associated angular position and into the angular position associated with the locking of the tool holder. These rotary transmission signals are used to control the locking.

  • Patent number: 5065492
Abstract: A machine tool turret having a plurality of tool holders with tension rod-actuated mechanisms for locking the tool head can be rotated to bring a selected tool holder into engagement with jaws of a release unit, applying to the tension rod a force sufficient to compress the disk spring stack thereof and release the tool and to the holder a counterforce which is equal and opposite in direction and prevents the release unit from stressing the bearings of the turret or any spindle bearings which may make the tool holder rotatable.

  • Patent number: 5054343
Abstract: A turret lathe table having tool holders arranged on at least three concentric reference circles around the center of the table. The tool holders consist of first tool holders for drill tools and inner turning tools and second tool holders for outer turning tools. The first tool holders are arranged exclusively on the innermost and at least one intermediate reference circle, while the second tool holders are arranged only on the outermost reference circle. The spacing between the tool holders is such that a collision-free diameter remains between adjacent tool holders, the collision-free diameter being defined as a diameter equivalent to a workpiece of maximum dimensions capable of being machined by a respective tool in a respective tool holder without interference from tools in adjacent tool holders.

  • Patent number: 5027682
Abstract: A mechanism for detachably mounting any selected one of several attachments to a hollow spindlehead ram within which a spindle is rotatably supported by a hollow shaft, the latter being capable of both rotary and axial displacement relative to the ram. Both the hollow shaft and the selected attachment are coupled with the ram via Curvic coupling teeth. Further, in order to retain the attachment in positive engagement with the ram via the Curvic coupling teeth, a series of external locking teeth are formed on the hollow shaft at constant circumferential spacings for engagement with a series of internal locking teeth formed on the attachment. The hollow shaft forces the attachment against the ram via the interengaged locking teeth under hydraulic pressure.

  • Patent number: 4989303
Abstract: A tool turret has a locking mechanism part axially slidable relative to the turret head with a face gear engaging face gears of the turret head and the housing in its locked position. The axial slidability of the locking mechanism part out of its locked position and the curtailibility of an opposing compression spring allows disengagement of the face gear of the locking mechanism part from at least one of the other two face gears. The force of the compression spring during the load on the turret head arising in disturbance-free operation is greater than the force working through this load on the locking mechanism part in the direction of disengagement of its face gear. In case of a collision with a stress exceeding the load capacity of the tool turret, the force of the compression spring is smaller than the collision force working through this load on the locking mechanism part in the direction of a disengagement of its face gear.

  • Patent number: 4972744
Abstract: A tool turret has a locking mechanism part which can slide axially relative to the turret head. The locking mechanism part is aligned with annular gears of the turret head and of the housing. In its locked position, an annular gear on the locking mechanism part mates with the gears of the turret head and housing. An axial drive engages a control member which is rotatable relative to the locking mechanism part and has at least one curved sector. The curved sector has a shape for thrusting the locking mechanism part into its locked position by a continuation of the rotary movement of the control member relative to the locking mechanism part in the direction of the preceding rotary movement setting the new angular position of the turret head.

  • Patent number: 4843691
Abstract: A lathe comprises two turrets each arranged on a compound slide system. The turrets are mounted on sides of the two compound slide systems facing each other and have indexing axes extending parallel or at a slight incline to the work spindle axis of the lathe. To reduce the danger of collisions between the two turrets and to enable the two turret bodies to be moved close together, the turret body located on the headstock side is smaller and has less stations than the other turret body with the result that the circles described by the tool cutting edges during rotation of the two turrets are smaller in the case of one turret than in the other.

  • Patent number: 4843929
Abstract: A tool is clamped to a holder by a clamping mechanism carried by the holder. The clamping mechanism includes a plurality of clamping jaws having longitudinally extending shanks. The clamping jaws are actuated by a longitudinally reciprocable drawbar carried by the holder. The jaws are normally spring-biased to laterally inward, non-clamping positions and are actuated to a clamping position by means of a longitudinally movable drawbar carried by the holder. Actuation of the jaws occurs in a two-phase operation. In an initial phase, the shanks are displaced laterally outwardly so as to overlie a shoulder of the tool. In a subsequent phase, the shank is moved longitudinally into contact with the tool shoulder to clamp the tool against the holder.

The base unit will be secured at a precise and fixed location on the turret top plate and to effect a tool change, only the tool holding member will be removed from the base unit. In one exemplary embodiment, the base unit has a machined slot or groove in the front surface thereof and each tool holding member has a mating machined tongue that will cooperate to limit or prevent relative horizontal movement yet permit relative vertical movement therebetween. A separate vertical positioning mechanism will set and maintain the relative vertical positioning.
