  • Patent number: 8245609
Abstract: A reporting system, employing a microprocessor, tracks the operation of an on-vehicle brake lathe and provides records of the resurfacing operations performed by the lathe. Identification of the vehicle and wheel position of a brake disk to be resurfaced are inputted using an operator interface, and stored in a temporary memory. When tool bits of the lathe are positioned to set a depth of cut, a thickness monitor indicates the resulting thickness for the brake disk, which is compared to a minimum thickness specification for the inputted vehicle and wheel position to determine whether the disk can be resurfaced to meet the specification. If so, a cutting operation evaluator monitors a continuity checker that is responsive to contact of the tool bits and the disk to determine when the resurfacing operation is complete, at which time the collected data can be reported.

  • Patent number: 8082823
Abstract: A stationary frame is positioned in surrounding relation with the surface of a polyethylene conduit to be prepared for scraping preliminary to performing electrofusion on the conduit by a keyhole operation in an excavated underground location. A scraper tool is mounted on the frame in a fixed longitudinal position to rotate around the surface of the conduit. A cutting blade of the scraping tool extends longitudinally a preselected length on the conduit into contact with the surface of the conduit. Rotation of the scraper tool carries the cutting blade completely around the surface of the conduit to remove a uniform layer of material from the surface of the conduit. Any out of roundness existing in the conduit is removed before the scraping operation is commenced. Uniform compression is applied by split clamps surrounding the conduit. Compression of the clamps restores the conduit to a concentric configuration preliminary to the electrofusion operation.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a spherical cavitation. Depending upon the chamber's composition and wall thickness, chambers fabricated with the disclosed techniques can be used with either low or high pressure systems. During chamber fabrication, initially two spherical half portions are fabricated and then the two half portions are joined together to form the desired cavitation chamber. During the fabrication of each chamber half, the interior spherical surface is completed first and then the outer spherical surface. Prior to joining the two spherical cavitation chamber halves, the surfaces to be mated are finished, preferably to a surface flatness of at least 0.01 inches. Electron beam welding is used to join the chamber halves together. Preferably the electron beam welding operation is performed under vacuum conditions. • Patent number: 7546787
Abstract: A dynamic spindle adjustment permitting an adjustment movement for the compensation of a wobble of the body held by the work spindle is provided on the spindle bearing of a machine tool. The regulation is designed at least dynamically enough for the regulation to permit a reliable tracking of the rotating work spindle. As a result of this, one or more spindles can be moved relative to a stationary machine in such a manner that the path of a body held on the work spindle represents an ideal rotation about the desired body axis, that is, the axis of symmetry. The compensation motion can be achieved by energizing appropriate actuators of the bearing devices with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal adjustment signals, which are superimposed to produce a circular motion of the affected bearing device. This circular motion compensates for orbital motions of the misaligned body (7) held on the work spindle.

Abstract: An on-car disc brake lathe system for resurfacing a brake disc of a vehicle brake assembly includes a lathe body with a driving motor, a cutting head operably attached to the lathe body, and a drive shaft. The system also includes an alignment system having an electronic controller, input and output adaptors configured to rotate with the drive shaft, one or more adjustment discs, and an adjustment mechanism. The adjustment disc is positioned between the input adaptor and the output adaptor, and an axial alignment of the input adaptor relative to the output adaptor may be varied based on a rotational orientation of the adjustment disc. The adjustment mechanism is configured to change the rotational orientation of the adjustment disc in response to commands from the electronic controller.

Abstract: An NC lathe performs various processing at the same time to a plurality of works. The NC lathe includes a first spindle and a second spindle, and a tool rest having tools for processing works. The tool rest is freely movable in the direction of Z1-axis and X1-axis. The second spindle is freely movable in the direction of X2-axis and Z2-axis. An NC unit controls the movement in the direction of the X1-axis and the Z1-axis of the tool rest, and controls the movement in the direction of the X2-axis and the Z2-axis of the second headstock. The NC unit superposes the movement in the direction of the X2-axis on the movement of the X1-axis of the tool rest. Furthermore, the movement of the Z2-axis is superposed on the movement in the direction of the Z1-axis of the tool rest.

Abstract: A rotational machining and quality assurance method for thermally extruded linings of turbomachinery are provided. First, a harder top coating is removed by turning, then the lining is finish-turned to size. During the finish-turning, defined turning parameters are maintained and a cutting force characteristic is quantitatively detected and stored. The force characteristic is compared with predetermined limit values, and, depending on the result of the comparison, the lining is approved for use or is produced again.

Abstract: When a bonded substrate stack prepared by bonding a first substrate in which a single-crystal Si layer is formed on a porous layer, and an insulating layer is formed on the single-crystal Si layer to a second substrate is to be separated at the porous layer, serrate defects at the peripheral portion of the separated substrates are prevented. A fluid is ejected from an ejection nozzle (112) and injected into the porous layer of a bonded substrate stack (30) while rotating the bonded substrate stack (30) about an axis (C) in a direction (R), thereby separating the bonded substrate stack (30) into two substrates at the porous layer. When the peripheral portion of the bonded substrate stack (30) is to be separated, the ejection nozzle (112) is located within a range (B).

  • Patent number: 6568303
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting rings from ring forgings of titanium or related materials is described. The ring forging is gripped and rotated about its centerline in a centering chuck. A tool holder is mounted parallel to and spaced from the centerline of the forging. The displacement of the tool holder is controlled both along and perpendicular to the centerline. First and second cutter bars having first and second cutter bits are mounted to the tool holder. The first cutter bar is mounted so that it may be moved along a diameter of the ring forging with the second cutter bar moving along a line parallel to, coplanar with and spaced from this diameter. The second cutter bit is wider than the first cutter bit. The second cutter bit widens the cut made by the first cutter bit, thereby providing chip clearance and cooling for the ring being cut.

  • Patent number: 6568884
Abstract: A device aids the setter of a cutter head for cutting, e.g., milling or hobbing, of spiral bevel gears to align all rod-shaped blades with their tip cutting edges to an axial height which is as uniform as possible and to move them with their profile cutting edges to a correct radial position in the cutter head so that uniform chip removal can take place. The device has a stable arm which can be moved numerically controlled axially and radially to the cutter head, with positions which are continuously measured and with which each individual blade can be automatically pushed into its chamber in the cutter head. A probe which is connected to the arm measures the axial height of the tip cutting edge of each blade before, during and shortly after each blade is pushed in.
