Patent number: 7461576Abstract: An improved apparatus for trimming an irregular open end of a container body is disclosed. The improved trimmer cartridge includes a sealed gear housing, for retention of interior lubricant and to reduce contamination. An adjustment mechanism, accessible from the exterior of the housing, is provided to adjust a gap between two blades of the trimmer cartridge. The adjustment mechanism provides improved control over the gap width, which is between 8-25% of the can metal thickness. Additionally, a tang that is removably connected to a shaft for a first blade provides rotational power for the trimmer. The tang is replaceable without requiring the housing to be opened or requiring replacement of the blade shaft. Another blade shaft is provided for a second blade, with the two blade shafts having substantially equal mass. The trimmer also includes spur gears, which do not have the thrust load associated with prior art helical gears.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2004Date of Patent: December 9, 2008Assignee: Metal Container CorporationInventor: Thomas C. Patent number: 4905552Abstract: The pipe rotary cutting device of this invention comprises shifter means which is operative to rotate a cylindrical body relative to a main shaft to thereby rotate an internal gear secured to the cylindrical shaft. The rotation of the internal gear rotates pinion gears secured to the main shaft to thereby rotate eccentric shafts provided coaxially with the pinion gears. Then the rotation of the eccentric shafts is converted by sliders into radial movements. A cutting tool as well as disc cutters are provided on the sliders respectively through a cutting tool holder and cutter holders. The pipe rotary cutting device of such arrangement enables the steps of chamfering and cutting to be carried out simultaneously, and accordingly the chamfering step of removing the outward burrs created in cutting a pipe is totally unnecessary.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1988Date of Patent: March 6, 1990Assignee: Shinko Kikai Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Shojiro Shinbori

Patent number: 4302958Abstract: The invention relates to methods and apparatus for making rings from tube stock (10) by a part-off rolling tool (12,15) which is advanced radially into the tube stock to form successive rings, e.g. annular blanks for subsequent roll forming into bearing rings. The tube stock is indexed forward after separation of each ring. Errors in the length of tube stock indexed forward each time are contained by forming a locating groove (47) on the tube stock by means of a groove-rolling tool (40) set at an appropriate axial distance from the part-off rolling tool (12) and moved radially with it. In the next cycle the groove (47) automatically centers the part-off tool as the latter begins its advance into the tube stock, so as to give the correct axial length of the finished ring. The part-off tool is stopped before fully penetrating the tube wall, which is then machined. Final separation takes place during this machining or in a subsequent finishing pass by the part-off tool.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1979Date of Patent: December 1, 1981Assignee: Formflo LimitedInventors: Ronald C.
