  • Patent number: 6918328
Abstract: Lack of balance of a crank mechanism, which reciprocates a ledger having one or more guides for one or more cigarette rods or filter rods each issuing from a maker and being subdivided into a row of cigarettes or filter mouthpieces, is at least partially counteracted by at least two counterpoises one of which orbits about the axis of the crank mechanism in a first direction and the other of which orbits, in a second direction counter to the first direction, about a second axis laterally offset relative to the axis of the crank mechanism. A third counterpoise can be mounted for orbital movement about the axis of the crank mechanism and, if utilized, is angularly offset relative to the first counterpoise. The prime mover for the crank mechanism orbits the first and third counterpoises in the first direction, and the second counterpoise in the second direction.

  • Patent number: 5850773
Abstract: The leading end portion of an elongated length of wire is cut off from the remaining length of wire each time the wire dwells after being advanced along a generally horizontal path. The cutting is effected by moving a cutter downwardly into cutting engagement with the wire and by immediately thereafter moving a wiper downwardly into engagement with the leading end portion of wire to push that portion downwardly and, if necessary, to cause shearing of any uncut diameter of the wire. The cutter and the wiper are actuated by a single, double-acting eccentric which serves to positively advance and positively retract both the cutter and the wiper. The cutter is carried by an arm which is actuated directly by the eccentric while the wiper is carried by a pivoted link connected to the arm. The eccentric, the arm and the link coact to cause the wiper to overtake the cutter as the cutter approaches the bottom of its cutting stroke.

  • Patent number: 5279196
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting stacked sheet-like material has a table surface which includes an entry zone for receiving the material to be cut, a working zone above which a cutting blade and press beam are located, as well as an exit zone for receiving the material after it is cut. The exit zone comprises a first zonal area adjacent to the working zone and a second zonal area adjacent to the first zonal area, and a first straightedge arranged below the exit zone in the area of a parting surface of the two zonal areas. The second zonal area can be lifted from an initial position where it forms a plane with the first zonal area and the first straightedge can be lifted and moved into a working position with the first zonal area. The exit zone can be moved as a whole perpendicular to the cutting plane to form a gap between the exit zone and the working zone.

  • Patent number: 5134914
Abstract: An elongated piece to be cut is clamped in a vise (9) and is in abutment against a stop (10), the stop (10) being secured on a shaft (11) free to rotate in bearings. The shaft is connected to a connecting rod (19) and a rod (20) of adjustable length to an arm (4) which carries the sawing blade (6), whereby, as the cutting operation is carried out, the stop (10) rises while pivoting and loses contact with the piece being cut before the cutting operation is finished.

  • Patent number: 5115599
Abstract: A unitary workpiece handling system has a frame (10) which can be operatively coupled to a supply conveyor (1, 4, 5, 6) which transports workpieces to a supply position. Two transfer jaws (17, 18) engage and guide and may grip the workpiece at end faces and, by pivotable mounting and upon pivoting about a pivot axis (20), transfer the workpiece to a receiver (22, 23) which is formed by receiver elements having upstanding portions to define an essentially prismatic configuration therebetween. The receiver is pivotable about a receiver axis (21) to transfer the workpieces to a workpiece gripping system (25) which picks up the workpiece at the end faces and places it on a delivery conveyor (26) or the like, directly or after rotating the workpieces by 90.degree., so that upstanding disk-like elements are laid flat. A plurality of workpieces can be, individually, in the transfer jaws (17, 18), the receiver (22, 23) and the gripper (25) to provide for rapid handling.

  • Patent number: 4441535
Abstract: A mobile log sawing and splitting machine including trailer frame having a vehicle engaging hitch at its forward end and ground engaging wheels at its rear end, with a saw mandrel mounted to extend crosswise of the beam adjacent its rear end and a log splitting mechanism mounted lengthwise of the beam for splitting cut-off sections of the logs. An internal combustion engine is mounted to enable quick disengagement of the engine from the drives for the log saw and log splitting mechanisms to facilitate starting and/or selectively disconnection of the drive to one or the other of the mechanisms. An upper saw guard is mounted for turning about the axis of the saw mandrel in response to movement of the log support mechanism during a cutting operation, and a lower stationary saw guard is arranged to receive the upper saw guard. The lengthwise extending trailer beam also functions as a hydraulic reservoir for the hydraulic power system.

  • Patent number: 4329898
Abstract: Apparatus for subdividing a web of wrapping material into sections of predetermined length has a reciprocable carriage for a pair of grippers which are pivotable into engagement with the web to thereby clamp the web against the carriage while the latter moves forwardly. This advances the web through a distance which approximates but is less than the distance necessary to advance the web by the length of a section. The grippers are thereupon disengaged from the web while the carriage continues to move forwardly, and the web is braked by one or more brushes so that two pawls whose pallets are biased against the web can catch up with a pair of marginal notches in the web. The pallets enter the respective marginal notches and complete the forward movement of the web. A mobile knife cooperates with a stationary knife to sever the web and to thus separate a section from the leader of the web while the carriage moves rearwardly.

  • Patent number: 4294295
Abstract: The apparatus comprises a wheel-mounted frame on which engine driven hydraulic pumps are mounted to provide hydraulic power. Extending from the side of the frame is a live deck for transporting logs transverse to their length. A longitudinal conveyor receives the logs from the live deck and transports the logs to a retractable stop to establish the length of a firewood block. A saw adapted to transversely cut the log is arranged to be lowered to cut the block from the log. A guard encloses the saw and supports clamps that clamp the log on each side of the saw during cutting. The retractable stop is retracted from the log end as the guard clamps the log for cutting. Following cutting the cut block is directed to a centering device which centers the block relative to a hydraulic actuated ram and fixed splitter blades. The block is split when forced across the splitter blades by the ram. A kicker rejects log remnants to a reject conveyor. Unsuitable blocks are rejected to the reject conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4077289
Abstract: A ribbon consisting of a series of interconnected labels is transported, first continuously and thereupon intermittently, along an elongated path toward a severing station where a movable knife separates successive foremost labels and the separated labels are engaged by pivotable suction heads which move the respective labels sideways into a different path for transport to a packing or other processing machine. That portion of the ribbon path which is located immediately ahead of the severing station extends along an arc of 180.degree., and the mechanism for intermittently transporting the ribbon has two pivotable deforming jaws which cooperate to deform the ribbon between successive labels whereupon a shoulder of one of the jaws engages the deformed portion and pushes the ribbon toward the severing station.
