  • Patent number: 6776074
Abstract: Apparatus for and a method of handling flexible tubes, for example in the production of a liner for a cargo container to provide a tubular attachment on the liner. A tube 16 in the form of a web of flexible material is drawn over a support 39 mounted on a carrier 29,30, the support having a greater area than that of the opened-out tube and being tilted to the radial plane (FIG. 2) during the drawing action. The support is then moved to the radial plane (FIG. 4) so as to stretch the tube 16 in the region of the support whereafter the tube is cut from the web, in the vicinity of the support. The support 39 is moved to a further processing station (FIG. 8), carrying the cut off tube 16, whereat the tube is released from the support 39 by tilting the support once more and withdrawing the support from the tube. The support is then returned to its initial position ready for another cycle of operation.

  • Patent number: 5697274
Abstract: Apparatus for trimming cylindrical cans wherein each can is orbited about a central turret axis while being rotated about its longitudinal can axis is disclosed. The cans are successively mounted with vacuum onto a support mandrel located on a support shaft within each of plural cartridge assemblies mounted at circumferentially spaced intervals on a turret disk. The can is firmly secured to the mandrel by vacuum so that the open end portion of the can body projects between an outside circular cutting knife and an inside trimming edge disposed within the open end. As the cartridge orbits about the turret axis on the shaft axis, the inside trimming edge is radially displaced by camming action into contact with the open end portion of the can body and the outside cutting edge to generate cutting forces for trimming the portion.

  • Patent number: 5564321
Abstract: The can trimmer includes first and second supports adjustably mounted on bars for adjustably spacing the supports from one another dependent upon the height of the cans to be trimmed. The supports mount a motor-driven splined shaft for rotating first and second carrier wheels and star wheels between the carrier wheels. Cam-actuated pushers are mounted on the pusher carrier wheel and mandrels are carried on the other carrier wheel in axial opposition to the pushers. Cam-actuated trim heads are pivotally carried by the second carrier wheel for movement toward and away from the mandrels, respectively. Upon disposition of cans on the star wheels between the pushers and mandrels, the pushers carry the cans onto the mandrels for cutting by the trim heads. Air pressure pushes the cans off the mandrels in following engagement with the pushers for discharge.

  • Patent number: 4635514
Abstract: A shearing apparatus for bar stock comprising a fixed die and a movable die wherein the movable die comprises a shearing ring carried by an arm at a location intermediate the ends of the arm, an eccentric fixed on a driven shaft is journalled in one end of the arm, and the other end of the arm includes a slot which receives a rotationally mounted slide block so that the slot and slide block coact to accommodate combined rotary and translatory movement of that end of the arm. The described arrangement produces an elliptical loop movement of the movable die relative to the fixed die to cleanly shear the stock. Also disclosed is a novel mandrel assembly including a pair of plug members adapted to be positioned within tubular stock to be cut wherein one of the plug members is mounted for selective radial excursion during the shearing operation to accommodate the eccentric movement of the movable die.

  • Patent number: 4510830
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting through transversely or trimming pipes, pieces of tubing or cans by means of two cooperating shearing members having each a cutting edge which extends in a circular or otherwise closed line. These shearing members are mounted for relative radial wobbling shearing movement. There are provided in the apparatus also means for keeping the cooperating cutting edges at a safe axial distance from one another to avoid, during operation, damage to them, said means at the same time allowing the shearing members to relatively move in all radial directions to achieve the wobbling shearing operation.

  • Patent number: 4245537
Abstract: A two-piece tool for circumferentially scoring an optical fiber (11). Retaining member (21) has a substantially flat end surface (26) beyond which a portion (13) of the optical fiber protrudes perpendicularly. The scoring ring holder (28) floatably mounts a scoring ring (30). When the retaining member is inserted into the scoring ring holder, the portion (13) of the optical fiber extends into the scoring ring. A preselected relative orbital motion between the retaining member and scoring ring holder causes the scoring ring to revolve about the optical fiber scoring a line about the fiber circumference.

  • Patent number: 4003278
Abstract: A device for cutting lengths of tubing from a longer tube utilizes an external pair of cutting dies and an internal pair of punches. An eccentric relative motion ("shimmy") of the cutting dies results in the desired cutting of the tube. The punches are inserted into the tube from the end of the tube from which the length of tubing is to be cut. A restraining arrangement prevents the punches from moving farther along the tube than is desired, while a punch positioning mechanism prevents movement of the punches toward the open end of the tube. Thus, the internal punches are accurately positioned with respect to the external cutting dies. A centering arrangement is utilized to insure coaxiality of the punches.
