  • Patent number: 6561065
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for punching holes at any location along the length of an elongate hollow body comprising an expandable die which is insertable into the elongate hollow body. The elongate hollow body may have any shape and be of any length. In operation, the expandable die cooperates with the punch or punches of an external, conventional punch press. The expandable die self-aligns its die cavity or cavities with the punch or punches of the external punch press. The expandable die can expand to support the elongate hollow body during the punching operation to avoid denting or other damage to the elongate hollow body.

  • Patent number: 5967010
Abstract: A process for cutting hollow molded plastic parts uses two knife cuttings in sequence. A first knife blade (42) is pressed on an uncut hollow molded plastic part for cutting therethrough with a guillotine blade action to form an access hole (46, 48) in the plastic part (10). The plastic part (10) may be secured onto a clamp (34, 36) for the first guillotine blade action. An outer support clamp (50, 52) is then secured about the plastic part with an outer side of the support clamp being positioned in proximity to the finished cut edge (65) of a finished plastic part. A mandrel (54) is inserted into the access hole (46, 48) of the part. The inner end of the mandrel is axially spaced from the outer side of the support clamp to allow a thin knife blade therebetween. A thin knife blade (62, 64) then cuts off the rough edge (47) to provide a finished cut edge (65) in the plastic part axially interposed between the outer side of the support clamp and the inner mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5699708
Abstract: The invention provides a punch press capable of impressing a plurality of holes or other changes in a workpiece. The central core piece of the punch press receives the workpiece and expands until it touches the inner walls of the workpiece. This holds the workpiece in place and prevents any workpiece movement or distortions in the holes formed because of movement of the workpiece. Hydraulic cylinders impel the plurality of punches toward the workpiece at substantially the same pressure and time.

  • Patent number: 4736611
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming bolt and center-pilot mounting openings in vehicle wheels, particularly styled-disc vehicle wheels. A preformed rim and disc assembly is engaged and fixtured around the rim bead seat with the inboard disc face resting on a lower die assembly and without plastic deformation to the rim or disc. An upper die assembly having an array of bolt hole punches is moved into piercing-and-coining engagement with the disc to form the bolt openings continued motion of the upper die assembly against the wheel disc pushes the disc and lower die assembly into shearing engagement with a center punch which forms the center-pilot opening. The axes of the bolt openings and/or center pilot opening and/or bead seats may be aligned or offset from each other.

  • Patent number: 4679289
Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming intruded sleeves in extrudable metal tubing thereby to receive branch tubes which are brazed in place. The apparatus comprises a split mandrel and a punch which drives a punch head through the tube wall section and into a pocket in the upper section of the mandrel to form the intruded sleeve structure. Removal of the mandrel is accomplished by removing a lower section, dropping the upper section off of the intruded sleeves, and thereafter removing the upper section.

  • Patent number: 4631047
Abstract: An apparatus for forming aligned front and rear hand holes in the front and rear panels of a bag according to the invention has a support having a front face and an oppositely directed rear face adapted to respectively support the front and rear panels of the bag and formed with respective aligned front and rear annular recesses of a shape corresponding to that of the hand holes to be cut. Respective annular front and rear outer holddowns are engageable with the respective faces for pressing the respective panels thereagainst around the respective recesses. An annularly continuous front cutter blade is engageable in the front recess and an annular but discontinuous rear cutter blade is engageable in the rear recess. A rear inner holddown is also engageable with the rear face within the recess.

  • Patent number: 4397207
Abstract: A self-contained sheet metal cutter is mounted on a wheeled dolly and includes upper and lower power driven shear cutting wheels between which is engaged the plate or sheet to be cut. An adjustable trammel assembly extends from the dolly and includes a center point member engageable with an aperture in the plate to be cut and which corresponds to the center of the arc or circle. The trammel is adjustable to the radius of the arc or circle and the center point is engaged with the aperture in the sheet whereupon the wheeled dolly is pushed manually around the arc or circle as the shear wheels cut the sheet to the preset radius arc or circle. The rear wheel of the dolly is castor so that it follows the track readily and easily.

  • Patent number: 4392400
Abstract: A trimming and piercing apparatus of an extremely high operation efficiency which is capable of trimming and piercing a work simultaneously. The apparatus comprises a fixed die provided with a work mounting surface and a piercing bore opened at the work mounting surface, and a movable die displaceable toward and away from the fixed die. A pair of movable blades and a pair of fixed blades are provided in a spaced opposed relation on the movable die and the fixed die, respectively, so that the movable blades are engageable with said fixed blades when the movable die is moved toward the fixed die. A cam slide having a piercing punch is slidably mounted on the movable die. A cam driver is mounted on the fixed die for driving the cam slide to move along the movable die toward the fixed die to place the piercing punch into fitting engagement with the piercing bore in the fixed die as the movable die is displaced toward the fixed die.
