Work Feed Increment Shorter Than Longitudinal Tool Field Patents (Class 83/237)
  • Patent number: 8783147
Abstract: A nibbling tool (11) adapted to incrementally remove material from an edge of sheet material (96). The nibbling tool (11) comprising a punch (71) adapted to reciprocate within a die (81). The punch (71) is configured to define a substantially radial contact surface (78) having a peripheral edge (79). The die (81) comprises an elongate guide for guiding reciprocation of the punch (71). The die (81) has a slot (87) which is adapted in use to receive said edge of the sheet material (96) and which is so positioned that the radial contact surface (78) on the punch (71) is caused to reciprocate across the slot (87). The slot (87) comprises a support surface (88) adapted to provide support to the sheet material (96) such that in use the peripheral edge of the contact surface (78) is caused to engage the sheet material (96) and cause it to be pressed against said support surface (88) to cause the incremental removal of material from the sheet (96).

Abstract: A method and machine for the multi-stroke, continuous slotting of plate-shaped workpieces and especially sheet metal plates are described. As part of a method for the continuous multi-stroke slotting of plate-shaped workpieces, a slotting tool (16) and the workpiece are moved in an advance direction relative to each other in a gate-cutting function and is at least one subsequent slot cutting stroke. This is followed by a return movement in the opposite direction (32) over a return length (A) that corresponds at a maximum to the length of the previously laterally cut slot. This is followed by a cross-cutting stroke in which the strip of material (31) that was laterally cut in the gate-cutting function and the minimum of one subsequent slotting stroke is severed at a distance from the point of its connection to the remaining workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5722386
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a non-linear, ornamental edge along a cement siding workpiece. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a first cutting blade is configured to have a non-linear shape corresponding to a shape of an ornamental feature that is to be cut in the cement siding workpiece. A second cutting blade is then configured to have the non-linear shape of the first cutting blade. The first and second cutting blades are aligned with one another to position a first cutting edge on the first cutting blade opposite to a second cutting edge on the second cutting blade. A cement siding workpiece is then positioned between the first and second cutting blades so that the first and second cutting blades are aligned with a location at which an ornamental feature is desirably formed on the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5062582
Abstract: An apparatus and method for manufacturing partially cut (semi-converted) products in continuous roll form has input feeds for supplying a continuous web of material and a continuous transport web in parallel, feed rollers for incrementally advancing the two webs together to a cutting station where product units are partially cut in successive increments in a continuous strip, a scrap remover, and a station for winding up the cut product strip. The webs are unwound and the cut product strip is wound via dancer bars maintaining constant tension. The input webs have a width which is a multiple of the width of the product units so that multiple strips can be formed simultaneously. The invention is used to form semi-converted, micro diskette liners having connecting portions and indented cutouts marking the boundaries between units. The cutouts are overcut in one direction and also in an intersecting direction to obtain complete cuts despite slight variations in registration.

Abstract: A machine for cutting coarse sod into relatively small plugs for ready packaging and subsequent transplanting, comprising an endless conveyor belt upon which comparatively large rectangular sections of sod can be deposited, so that the sections of sod can be moved intermittently toward a sod cutting device. The sod cutting device preferably is of the single pass cutter type, utilizing a plurality of elongate, closely grouped blades designed to periodically move in unison downwardly into contact with sod to be cut, with such downward cutting movements being immediately followed by an upward movement, thus to permit an advance of the section of sod without interference. I coordinate the movements of the sod cutting device with the belt advance, such that forward movement of a section of sod is in each instance prevented until the cutting blades are clear of the section of sod being cut.

  • Patent number: 4089244
Abstract: A stamping or nibbling machine, comprises a workpiece support or means for engaging the workpiece at a spaced location from a punch which reciprocates upwardly and downwardly in respect to a die in order to effect the stamping or nibbling of the workpiece. The support is mounted on a transverse bar which is pivotable about a transverse guide and the guide is carried on a carriage which is pivotable about a longitudinal guide. The workpiece is fed by holding the bar and the carriage against pivotal movement and driving them in the respective longitudinal direction when the punch is lifted off the workpiece. The rate of this feed may be controlled in timed relationship to the movement of the punch so that the feed takes place when the punch is off the workpiece and in a speed of feed which is determined in accordance with the torque acting on the transverse bar and the carriage when they are released for pivotal movement and sensed by associated torque meters.

  • Patent number: 3949630
Abstract: Battery grid plate castings are trimmed in a two-step operation. Each plate moves flat along a horizontal or inclined path against a first stop bar. One of two trim blades on a reciprocating upper die block then shears flashing from the leading end of the plate during a downward stroke of the die. Then the stop bar raises during the upward stroke of the die, and the plate moves forwardly against a second stop. Upon the next downward die stroke the second trim blade shears flashing from the trailing edge of the plate. During the next upward stroke, the fully trimmed plate moves forwardly onto a stacking device. As the leading end of one plate is trimmed at the first trim station, the trailing end of a preceding plate is trimmed at the second trim station. The second stop is easily moved to different stop positions along the path of travel of the plates to change the distance between such stop and the second trim blade and thereby enable trimming plates of different lengths without changing dies.
