  • Patent number: 4466318
Abstract: A drive system for the cutting station in a platen press has four toggle joints supporting the platen and each having a cam follower for moving the toggle joint by an associated rotating cam. The four toggle joints are disposed in pairs perpendicularly to the transport direction of sheets in the press. The pairs of toggle joints are aligned, with one pair of toggle joints being disposed between the other pair. The toggle joints are connected to a release device controlled by a security coupling. The cams are mounted on a common shaft provided at one end with a braking mechanism. Declutching of the security coupling simultaneously commands operation of each release device and of the braking mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4448099
Abstract: An improved method of operating an apparatus to cut sheet material workpieces eliminates the inadvertent dropping of a relatively small scrap or remainder portion of a workpiece into a clearance space between a pair of cutter blades and a discharge conveyor. Thus, a relatively large sheet metal workpiece is gripped by a holder which moves the workpiece relative to a pair of blades. The blades are moved relative to each other to cut the workpiece to form a product having a desired configuration. The product is dropped onto a discharge conveyor. In order to prevent a relatively small scrap piece remaining in the holder from being dropped into a space between the discharge conveyor and the blades, the holder is extended through the space between the blades to a location over the discharge conveyor and is opened to drop the scrap or remainder portion of the workpiece onto the discharge conveyor.

Abstract: Gas burners; particularly, apparatus for punching holes or ports in gas burner tubing. The apparatus includes a base and superposed frame, a press head with punch, which is reciprocally mounted in the upper part of the frame and a rotatably driven eccentric shaft which engages, so as to reciprocate the press head. As the press head reciprocates, the punch engages the receiving end of a gas burner tubing which is supported in a tube collar positioned within the lower part of the frame. The trailing end of the tubing is supported upon a tube arbor which is advanced incrementally towards the tube collar, as the punch is reciprocated. The apparatus is characterized by its capability of rapid punching of a longitudinally aligned series of ports in a gas burner tubing, with precise adjustment of port size and distance between ports.

  • Patent number: 4382395
Abstract: Automatic loading device for automatically positioning of panels of sheet metal or the like and to transfer the panels to a feeding device of a machine tool, preferably a cutting press. The cutting press cuts a plurality of blanks out of the panel along a given pattern which is stored in a program. The program is controlling the cutting press and the feed device in synchronism in order to provide the blanks, e.g. lids for cans within minimum production time. The time when the loading device is working overlaps the production time for the preceeding panel, i.e. the aligning of the panel in the loading device took place when the preceeding panel is cut. As soon as the feeding device returns to the zero position the loading device transfers the next panel to the feeding device, the panel maintaining its precise aligned position. The feeding device starts to a new feed cycle.

Abstract: A band saw having a generally vertically oriented saw blade carrying frame mounted to a movable carriage is disclosed. The carriage is mounted in a horizontally extending guideway in the saw base by an arm which is cantilevered from the back side of the vertical saw frame for support and guided motion of the saw from a relatively debris free portion of the saw base. Additionally, the band saw includes a work piece supporting bar feed table having a movable vise which is stabilized against backward tilting and a roller support assembly constructed so as to accommodate load concentrations from heavy, bent bar stock. Finally, an improved band saw blade guiding assembly is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4175688
Abstract: A pneumatic stock feeder for intermittently advancing strip stock into the work station of a punch press having a reciprocating working ram; the feeder having a control plunger that is adapted to be operated by the press ram. The feeder has an improved and simplified semi-automatic fluid valving arrangement that is adapted to be controlled by the movement of said control plunger whereby the feed slide means of the feeder is normally positioned in an index position, i.e. in a position ready to feed stock, and upon being triggered by a pressure start pulse is actuated through first a feed stroke and then automatically returned through an index stroke back to its normal position where it will remain until the initiation of the next cycle triggering pressure start pulse.

  • Patent number: 4151771
Abstract: This relates to the handling of thin soft temper material during the feeding thereof and in formation of such material into individual components in a punch press. Most particularly, a pull tab formed of a plastics material-aluminum foil laminate is being formed. In order to control the movement of the stock through the punch press, the stock is longitudinally stiffened by the formation of longitudinal ribs therein. The ribs are preferably formed by the stock feeding mechanism. The work product is blanked and formed substantially in its entirety in regions of the stock outside of the stiffening rib areas and prior to the final severing of the work product from the stock, the stiffening ribs are flattened. In the separation of the work product from the stock, there is material removal in a punching operation along the areas previously containing the stiffening ribs.

  • Patent number: 4131224
Abstract: An apparatus having a table defining a work surface, and a carriage mounted for movement over the work surface in one direction includes a device for precisely indexing a strip of sheet material in the same direction so that various sections of the strip can be operated upon by an instrument mounted on the carriage. The indexing device comprises a bar that is parked at one edge of the work surface while the instrument and carriage are working on one section of the sheet material. The bar is subsequently attached to the carriage above the sheet material for an indexing operation. A plurality of magnets are mounted in the bar and cooperate with a clamping plate placed under the bar and the sheet material to clamp the sheet material between the plate and the bar during an indexing operation. After the indexing operation, the clamping plate and bar are returned to the parking position at one edge of the work surface and the bar is detached from the instrument carriage.

Abstract: Apparatus for providing adhesive strips having a predetermined length includes a rotatable reel for support of a roll of adhesive tape. A conveyor, which may be a rotatable turn table, is provided for supporting thereon a plurality of adhesive strips which have been cut to a predetermined length from the roll of adhesive tape. A feed member is pivotably supported adjacent one end thereof for movement between a first position adjacent the reel and a second position adjacent the conveyor. The feed member carries a stationary cutter plate and a cutter bar which is reciprocable therealong and is cooperable with the cutter plate to cut adhesive tape withdrawn from the reel into strips of the predetermined length. The feed member carries at its outer end a latch plate for selectively grasping and retaining the free end of adhesive tape withdrawn from the reel. A lever rod is carried by the feed member and is movable longitudinally thereof and is operably connected to the latch plate.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method and device for cutting a bundle of irradiated nuclear fuel tubes so as to cut the fuel into pieces of a suitable length for subsequent operation.According to the invention the fuel tubes are moved from the storage pond by manipulating means to the store of the cutting machine. Means is provided for detecting the position of the bottom end of the bundle with respect to a cutting section in the cutter by means of a movable reference plate so as to enable the bundle to be moved to an operative position in which the first cut can be made in the immediate neighborhood of the base spigot. The arrangement also includes means for moving the bundle forwards while adjusting its position between two cutting operations.

  • Patent number: 4091699
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for cutting a bundle of tubes containing a nuclear fuel into pieces having a preset length so that the fuel can be dissolved in a suitable solution. The bundle of tubes is introduced into a guide tube in a shearing machine and is clamped by two side clamps within the tube so as to limit the width of the bundle to the diameter of one tube of the bundle. The side clamps subject the bundle to a sideways thrust so that the tubes in the bundle are maintained contiguous without any excessive curvature. The bundle of tubes is then submitted to a cutting operation at right angles to its major dimension and after the blade has been returned to its inoperative position a safety plate is positioned near the cut section at a distance slightly greater than the forward movement of the bundle between two successive cutting operations. The side clamps are then withdrawn by a limited amount so that the resilience of the tubes causes them to remain in contact with the clamps.
