To this end, the variable-velocity drive is basically devised from a number of universal joints interconnecting shafts whose axes intersect one another at an angle of up to approximately 45.degree.; the universal joints are so offset from one another in rotation that the variations or irregularities arising in the discrete joints are superimposed upon one another so as to have an amplifying effect. Since any one such universal joint arrangement passes through two velocity maxima and two velocity minima per revolution, gearing is provided on the input and output side to make the universal joint arrangement run at half the cycle speed.

  • Patent number: 4459887
Abstract: The drum drive in a rotary shear includes a pair of driving and driven surge gears and a coupling of which the driving and driven companion members are drivingly connected with the driven surge gear and with one of the drums. The shear is adjustable for varying the length of stock cut on each revolution of the drums, and such adjustment also requires shear synchronization with the fed stock which is accomplished by disconnecting the coupling members and angularly adjusting the surge gears relative to the drums. The coupling of featured lock type has companion members with cylindrical surfaces which are normally in such an interference fit with each other as safely to transmit without slippage torque in excess of the maximum required for stock-cutting operation of the shear, yet these coupling members are disconnectible for shear synchronization by applying pressurized fluid to their cylindrical interface.

Abstract: One of the two knife holder shafts in a cross cutter for webs of paper or the like is driven by a unit wherein a motor rotates the input shaft of a bevel gear drive whose output shaft drives or constitutes one shaft of a universal joint. The other shaft of the universal joint is driven by the one shaft and transmits torque to the knife holder shaft or shafts by way of a step-up gear transmission and a clutch which allows for changes in angular positions of the knife holder shafts with reference to the universal joint. An extension of the axis of the input shaft of the bevel gear drive intersects the axes of the shafts of the universal joint at the point where the axes of the shafts of the universal joint intersect each other. To this end, the other shaft of the universal joint contains an elastically deformable but torsion-resistant insert.
