Patent number: 11904490Abstract: Systems and methods described herein are optimized for cutting sealing elements on packages using optical radiation. Packages can pass through a cutting device that applies the optical radiation to damage, vaporize, or cut the sealing element (e.g., tape) on the package. The systems and methods control several aspects of the cutting process to adjust throughput, improve efficiency, and reduce line stoppages. Systems can include an in-feed conveyor that orients packages and rejects packages that are out of specification, which can lead to issues such as jamming or damage to the equipment. Systems can include a variable-speed cut conveyor controlled by a computing system to dynamically adjust the speed of packages based upon historical cut quality, environmental measurement data, and height data related to a vertical dimension of the package.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2022Date of Patent: February 20, 2024Assignee: Walmart Apollo, LLCInventors: Bryan Hawkins, Joseph David Blackner, John Marshall Jones, Santos Cerda, Jr., Geoffrey Michael Miller

Publication number: 20030131707Abstract: First and second rotating units (110, 120) include a pair of rotors (111, 121) opposing each other, a spindle (113, 123) provided between the pair of rotors, and an impacting body (130, 140) mounted rotatably on the spindle (113, 123). The impacting body (130, 140) is mounted so that a predetermined fitting gap is provided between the impacting body and the spindle and a part of a periphery of the impacting body can be positioned beyond a periphery of the rotor. The impacting bodies of the first and second rotating units impact on an object to be processed sequentially while the rotating units are rotated at a high speed, thereby cutting the object to be processed. A cutting depth by the impacting body of the second rotating unit is larger than that by the impacting body of the first rotating unit, and the impacting body of at least one of the rotating units impacts on the object to be processed at least at a critical impact velocity.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 13, 2002Publication date: July 17, 2003Inventors: Mikio Yotsumoto, Yutaka Matsuda

Publication number: 20020066344Abstract: An optical encoder is mounted on the end of the shaft of one roller, which is in turn mounted on framework of the equipment and is driven by a film of material. A computer receives a number of impulses per roller revolution with such impulses transmitted from the optical encoder during the film's passing over the roller. Software of the computer is programed with the exact circumference of the roller before shipment and the computer calculates the amount of film that has passed over the roller and fires solenoid valves to precipitate punching operations based upon the distance traveled by the film. Upon receiving an electrical impulse from the computer control, a solenoid valve releases an intermittent burst of compressed air through a tube to a housing which contains a plastic actuator, a plunger and a spring and which has several holes drilled in it to facilitate movement of said compressed air. The burst of compressed air forces the actuator and plunger downward.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 5, 2000Publication date: June 6, 2002Inventors: Harold A. Ewing, Bradley D. Gottlob

Patent number: 6305260Abstract: A novel knife apparatus and method are disclosed for cutting a plurality of articles from a sheet or web of material. The knife can be formed in or secured to the outer surface of a rotary die cutter. The knife includes a first cutting member having a first end, and second and third cutting members joined to the first end of the first cutting member. The second and third cutting members are arranged relative to one another to form an arcuate section which intersects with the first cutting member to form a non-symmetrical configuration having a cutting edge knife thickness in the range of about 0.003 inches to about 0.005 inches. A unique knife profile enables two adjacently arranged articles to be cut simultaneously from a sheet or web of material with zero clearance between at least a portion of the outer peripheries of the two articles.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1999Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Peter Truttmann, Jeffrey Allen Plamann, John Glen Ahles, Robert Lee Holewinski, Brian Dennis Clare, Timothy Noel Tease

Patent number: 6279440Abstract: A novel knife apparatus and method are disclosed for cutting a plurality of articles from a sheet or web of material. The knife can be formed in or secured to the outer surface of a rotary die cutter. The knife includes a first cutting member having a first end, and second and third cutting members joined to the first end of the first cutting member. The second and third cutting members are arranged relative to one another to form an arcuate section which intersects with the first cutting member to form a general wishbone configuration. The heavy duty knife and cutting method of the present invention employ a cutting edge knife thickness in the range of about 0.003 inches to about 0.005 inches. A unique knife profile enables two adjacently arranged articles to be cut simultaneously from a 1.5 sheet or web of material with zero clearance between at least a portion of the outer peripheries of the two articles.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1999Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Peter Truttmann, Jeffrey Allen Plamann, John Glen Ahles, Robert Lee Holewinski, Brian Dennis Clare, Timothy Noel Tease
