Convertible From Tool Path To Another Or From Implement To Machine Patents (Class 83/574)
  • Patent number: 4127046
Abstract: Apparatus for sawing which can be used either in portable, manually operated form, or as a stationary bench-mounted sawing device for sawing through a workpiece along predetermined angles of cut. The apparatus comprises a portable chain saw which includes a prime mover secured to one side of a flat mounting plate. A saw blade guide plate projects from the prime mover through a slot provided in the mounting plate, and in a plane substantially normal to the plane of the mounting plate. A saw blade is extended around, and guided by, the guide plate, and is protected by guard means pivotally mounted on the mounting plate. A cradle frame structure releasably receives and clamps the mounting plate in a table sawing position when the chain saw is to be so used. A cradle frame pedestal pivotally supports the cradle frame structure for pivotation about a horizontal axis.

  • Patent number: 4123957
Abstract: Support apparatus for supporting logs, boards and other work pieces to be cut either transversely or lengthwise, as well as for supporting a chain saw by its blade for performing the cutting. A support platform includes a top surface, preferably inclined downwardly toward an operator position, and a restraining rail to hold the work pieces in position for cutting. A spring-biased, rotatable axle mounts the chain saw by the free end of its blade for pivotal movement along one side of the platform to transversely cut work pieces. Alternately, a rigid saw support holds a chain saw vertically upright with its blade plane parallel to the direction of elongation of the work pieces for rip cutting. An outwardly extending, side support, opposite the saw support, movably mounts a second platform for additional support and movement of long logs, boards or other work pieces.

  • Patent number: 4056028
Abstract: The invention provides a method of guiding a portable power-saw across a workpiece being sawn. Apparatus for use in this method comprises a guide member which has a substantially flat surface which may be placed on the flat surface of the workpiece. The guide member has a straight edge and located on the flat surface of the guide member is a rod-holder which is orientated at a right angle or any other desired angle to the straight edge. A rod of material such as wood or plastic is inserted in the rod holder so that the rod extends therefrom for a few inches. The power-saw is then run along the straight edge of the guide member, with the sole plate of the saw maintained in snug contact therewith, until the rod is severed. Then the distance from the severed end of the rod to the straight edge is exactly the same as the distance between the sole plate edge and the saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4054077
Abstract: A saw guide for use with a hand held power saw comprises in combination, a base plate having a generally planar edge, a saw blade index which is connected to a side of the base plate and which projects beyond and outwardly of the generally planar edge. The saw blade index has a generally planar first edge extending along the length thereof. The planes of the generally planar edges of the base plate and the saw blade index intersect one another at an angle of 90.degree. or less. The arrangement is such that a workpiece to be cut is placed along the generally planar first edge of the saw blade index and against the side of the base plate where the side of the base plate is held in the face-down position to sandwich the workpiece between the saw guide and a workbench surface. The angle between the planes determines the angle at which the workpiece is cut with the hand held power saw.

  • Patent number: 3961550
Abstract: There is disclosed a band saw which can be utilized as a stationary or as a portable tool. The saw is principally designed for portable use with its table in a saw-supporting position, resting on the work, although it can also be utilized in combination with a bench support as a stationary band saw with its table in a work-supporting position. The weight and bulk of the saw are minimal, as necessary for its portable uses, by utilization of a universal adjustment mechanism providing fixed adjustability of the tension and tracking of the saw blade. The saw frame and table are preferably of cast metal to permit simple assembly into a rigid, lightweight tool that is free of frequent maintenance and adjustment. The saw is preferably provided in combination with a bench support for mounting the saw on a work table to provide a stationary band saw.

  • Patent number: 3945286
Abstract: A radial arm saw features light weight, portability and simplicity of construction. A standard supports a one-piece radial arm that comprises a pair of horizontal, vertically spaced cantilever rails rigidly joined at their outer ends by an integral connecting member. A sliding runner spans the rails and has vertically spaced bearing parts receiving corresponding rails. A vertical spindle on the runner is connected at its lower end to the top of a cage that receives a conventional portable circular saw, thereby suspending the saw unit beneath the rails and above the work surface. The spindle permits the cage to be rotated for either cross-cut or ripping operations, and the radial arm is adjustable in a horizontal plane by a special detent arrangement on the standard that allows the elevation of the saw unit to be varied in any selected radial position.

  • Patent number: 3943985
Abstract: A portable tool and method for connecting a cross piece to a series of parallel boards in a wooden frame assembly, by connecting a guide member temporarily to outer coplanar faces of the boards, directing the tool along the guide member and across those board faces to cut aligned similar notches therein, and then removing the guide member and connecting it or another member into the notches as a cross piece interconnecting the boards. To perform the notching action effectively, the tool has a first guide surface which engages and moves across the outer faces of the boards, with a cutter projecting inwardly beyond the plane of those faces to cut the desired notches, and with two additional guide surfaces engaging a lateral edge and outer face respectively of the guide member to positively locate and position the tool as it moves across the boards and forms the notches.
