Bevel Or Miter Cut Patents (Class 83/581)
  • Patent number: 4694720
Abstract: Method and apparatus for supporting a power tool, e.g., a power mitre box, are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment (10), an electrically-powered motor unit (16) is pivotably supported by a table (14) which in turn is rotatably supported by a base (12). The base (12) preferably includes four legs (20) and an equal number of studs (26). The legs (20) and studs (26) combine to form front slot (27a) and rear slot (27b) in the base (12) suitable for receiving a pair of horizontal support members, e.g., a pair of two-by-fours (34). The base (12) also preferably includes a pair of extensions (24) which are sized to make the top surface of the base (12) and table (14) flush with a plurality of cross pieces (36) spanning the horizontal support members (34). The flush surface created by the cross pieces (36), base (12) and table (14) is suitable for supporting a long workpiece so as to minimize blade binding and splintering.

  • Patent number: 4694721
Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing motive power to a tool are disclosed. A preferred power mitre box (10) including a base (12), a table (14) and electrically-powered motor unit (18) suitable for driving a saw blade (20) is described. The motor unit (18) includes an armature (40) and an arbor shaft (22) which are respectively supported by armature bearings 42 and arbor bearings 44 and are preferably substantially parallel and of substantially the same length. Also, the distances between the armature bearings (42) and the arbor bearings (44) are preferably substantially equal. The relatively large distance between the arbor bearings (44) causes the blade (20) to have very little play or deflection due to looseness in the bearings (44). In preferred embodiments, a speed reducer assembly (34) is located on the opposite end of the arbor shaft (22) in relation to the blade (20). Also, the speed reducer assembly is preferably of the cog belt type.

  • Patent number: 4685366
Abstract: Lightweight, portable apparatus for cutting a wide range of materials available in sheet form, such as matboard, glass, light plastic, and leather. The invention lies in the unification of its cutting tool guide tract with the means of fixing in place the material to be cut. Four pegs are attached to the base of the apparatus for aligning the sheet to be cut. Equally important is the means by which it is automatically held in place during the cutting operation. Pieces of foam rubber or the like are inlaid in the base of the apparatus so that when the operator is pressing down on the cutting tool the resultant force normal to the supporting surface is sufficient to prevent lateral motion of the apparatus. Thus, no bulky and awkward clamping devices need to be used to affix the cutter to its supporting table.

  • Patent number: 4467684
Abstract: Rotary saw blades mounted on primary supports of a truss component cutting machine require angular adjustment to produce various required angle cuts of the truss components without changing the necessary lengths of the components. To achieve this result, the outer face of each rotary saw blade must pivot around a fixed reference axis lying on the outer face of the blade. The system provides a number of diverse precision adjustments of parts on which the saw blades are supported to assure that the blades in all angularly adjusted positions will have their outer faces remaining on the fixed reference pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 4454794
Abstract: A power saw for rapid and repetitive accurate cutting of truss members on predetermined angles to insure tight fitting truss joints. The power saw is cycled vertically in a reciprocating mode and indexed at the limit of its respective up and downstrokes after being set at precise cutting angles. An adjustable saw indexing cylinder permits a wide range of web angle cuts. Workpiece clamps, mounted on a workpiece guide, coact with a web length stop to insure cutting webs of equal length and initiate the substantially automatic reciprocation and indexing of the saw acting on the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4452117
Abstract: A motorized saw for cross-cutting and mitering elongated workpieces mounted for sliding movement on a pair of spaced parallel guide rods supported by spaced trunnions attached to the ends of a support arm. The support arm is rotatably mounted intermediate its ends on a frame and has a worktable fixed thereon which includes a cutting channel that defines the pathway of travel of the saw. A pair of aligned fence members have their adjacent ends disposed in close proximity with the cutting channel and by means of a link rod operatively connected to each fence member and support arm, the fence members automatically adjust themselves to the cutting channel on selective movement of the support arm to a position for effecting a desired angle cut by the saw.

  • Patent number: 4441394
Abstract: A table saw guide apparatus includes a generally flat guide plate adapted to overlie the tabletop of a table saw, and an upstanding stop device is disposed adjacent to, and space laterally by a short distance from the saw blade. A projection is disposed on the underside of the plate and is adapted to fit securely within a tabletop groove for ficing the plate on the tabletop. A substantially flat workpiece carrier is disposed on, and in overlying relationship, with the upper surface of the plate. The carrier has an edge adapted to engage the stop device for slidable engagement therewith. The upper surface of the workpiece carrier is flush with the top edge surface of the stop device to permit the workpiece to rest on top of both the top edge surface device and the upper surface of the carrier. A gauge device is mounted removably in the upper surface of the carrier for engaging the workpiece and for helping position it angularly relative to the saw blade.

  • Patent number: 4411183
Abstract: Fibrous board transition parts are produced on the job site from standard lengths of preformed fiberboard duct units. Transition parts are interposed between linear runs of duct pieced together to change direction of the duct work. The transition parts, sometimes referred to as elbows or bends, can be easily fabricated on the job site by modifying standard lengths of preformed linear duct by cutting and removing pie-shaped sections from the duct. The modified duct can be bent inwardly to form a one-piece arcuate transition part wherein the outer wall section remains intact and provides structural strength to the transition part. The seams are secured with structural adhesive tape wrapped around the transition part.

  • Patent number: 4399725
Abstract: A strip of plastic material is cut by clamping the strip and then moving a cutting blade from a retracted position to a first position in cutting engagement with the strip. Simultaneously a supporting blade in overlapping relation with the cutting blade is moved to the first position for lifting the strip. The movement of the supporting blade stops at the first position and the cutting blade movement is continued through the strip. The cutting surface of the cutting blade is recessed adjacent the cutting edge so that upon movement of the cutting blade the contact with the strip is minimized to prevent the formation of burrs on the severed ends of the strip. After the strip is severed the cutting blade is retracted to the first position. From the first position, the cutting blade and supporting blade are moved to a fully retracted position and the strip unclamped so that the severed portion of the strip can be removed and the remaining portion of the strip moved into position for the next cut.

  • Patent number: 4355557
Abstract: A sawing device for translating the shape on a template to an accompanying sawing blade which gauges the workpiece to cut the workpiece in the desired shape and includes a table which detachably supports a pattern or template. The template is securable at one edge of the table surface. A track is supported at opposite edges of the table in a carriage assembly. The carriage assembly permits the entire track assembly to be moved in the X-X axis or longitudinally along the table. The carriage comprises a cylindrical sleeve secured to the end of the track which receives a longitudinal rod mounted to the table by appropriate brackets. The track defines a groove and supports a motor. The motor has a lip engaging the groove so the motor may be moved in the Y-Y axis or transversely of the table. The motor drives a vibrating or oscillatory blade which depends from the motor through the slot. The guide member also depends from the motor and is received in a groove in the subjacent template.
