  • Publication number: 20040237739
Abstract: An inserter input system including a web feeder providing a web of printed material to be split by a web slitting knife along the web's direction of travel. The split web is then cut transverse to the direction of travel by a web cutter, resulting in side-by-side individual sheets. Downstream of the rotary cutter, a right angle turn mechanism receives each of the side-by-side sheets and reorients them by ninety degrees. Further the right angle turn reorients the sheets into a serial shingled arrangement. The right angle turn transport operates at a velocity that is a function of the product of the web cutting rate and the width of the documents. A high speed separation nip pulls individual shingled sheets out from the shingled arrangement. The speed of the separation nip is such that a predetermined gap between the previously shingled sheets is formed. The separation nip speed is further controlled as a function of the product of the cutting rate and the sum of the document length plus the predetermined gap.

  • Patent number: 6634268
Abstract: A method for cutting sections from a specimen using a microtome wherein a cutting knife or specimen is advanced by an advancing carriage into a sectioning plane of a disk microtome. The advancing carriage is moved by a motor drive in order to bring the specimen into contact with an area sensor. When the specimen comes into contact with the area sensor, the position of the motor drive is determined and is compared with a stored position of the sectioning plane. The stored position is previously determined by manually locating the position drive motor when the specimen contacts the area sensor. Control signals for the motor drive are calculated from the two position values, and the advancing carriage is advanced into the sectioning plane by the motor drive taking these control signals into account.

  • Patent number: 6192777
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cutting pieces of material from a workpiece, such as a web of patterned fabric, which includes irregularities or which is misaligned with respect to a coordinate system of the cutting apparatus. The workpiece is spread on a cutting table where it is cut by a numerically controlled cutter in accord with an electronic marker stored in the cutter controller. The marker is matched to the workpiece and appropriate adjustments are made to the marker before the workpiece is cut. A laser, operatively connected to the controller, projects a match target onto the workpiece at a point corresponding to a selected point on the marker. The marker is then adjusted such that the selected point coincides with a desired location on the workpiece. Adjustment is achieved by electronically displacing the match target from a non preferred location to a preferred one. Software in the controller translates this displacement into appropriate adjustments to the marker.

  • Patent number: 4133233
Abstract: A program controlled cutting machine is provided with a sharpenable blade for cutting limp sheet material spread in a multi-ply layup on a support table. The program controlling relative movement of the cutting blade and sheet material along a cutting path compensates for wear on the cutting edge of the blade by extending the relative movement at selected points on the cutting path to improve cutting accuracy and quality.

  • Patent number: 3978747
Abstract: Reinforced polymeric tubular articles, e.g., wire braid reinforced hose, are severed into desired lengths by clamping the tubular article in a split fixture, the split portion defining a cutting plane, and preferably advancing the tubular article toward a stationary cutting blade while continuously maintaining tension on the surface of the tubular article being cut by progressively bending the tubular article as it is passed through the cutting blade until fully severed. The apparatus rapidly cuts the reinforced tubular articles very smoothly without binding.
